Hello, I'm a PCV doing community health in Madagascar. My access to the internet is not ideal, so I'm appealing to you all to help me out with a few questions:

What structured programs are out there for previous bio degrees (won't take bio courses, but perhaps refresh gen chem since its been five years)?

Are previous degrees in science a detterrent to some programs? Are fresh career changers preferred? if so, what other type of program is more appropriate?

What is the typical preferred application deadline? I need to get my materials together several months in advance to accomodate this.

if you've been out of school for 5 or more years, you will be a good candidate for any post-bac program. consider though that if you have taken the majority of post-bac classes as an undergrad (e.g. if you were premed as an undergrad), then a post-bac may be less useful for you since the grades will be averaged with the rest of your app. otoh, after 5 years, you probably could benefit by reatking some of the courses.

as far as deadlines go, it is to your advantage to apply as soon as possible since most medical schools have rolling admissions. june 1 was the opening date when i was applying, and some people i knew had their completed application fedexed to amcas that day. these days, i think you can do everything over the web (though i am not sure about this). at any rate, i can't stress enough that the sooner your app is in, the better.

congratulations on your peace corps assignement. that must be a wonderful experience.
