Stripping And Undressing, D.O. Style?!?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
All I know (which is sad, considering my $70,000 education) is that the first day of OCS is worse than any combination of experiences from undergrad.

Nothing like palpating the pubic tubercle...on someone you just met!!

(Didn't even buy me a drink)

Yep, but at least we got to keep our scrub pants on, unlike some of the other posters! 😀

KCOM dress code -- gym shorts. (and a sports bra for women.) The muslims of the class got away with gym pants and a tank top. That was after clearing it w/ the teachers.

Later, when you're reviewing things like the upper extremity, or learning the head & neck, dress code isn't strictly enforced.

After a week or two, no one really cares until a new, more "invasive" technique is taught... Rib palpation, sacrum rocking, perineal "lift"... but, life goes on. If you got a problem seeing nekkid flesh, you got a problem being a doc.

What sort of proof are they looking for when you say your a muslim? 😉

Wow, allopaths who stumble onto this forum have got to be jealous! I wonder what they talk about at their schools?? First year we wore t-shirts, etc... second year they brought out the "sport's bra" rule and although we all wore them "just in case" we mostly wore tanks over them. I was never all that "comfortable" as others claim, and I know my other friends weren't either. If ya can't feel a vertebra under a t-shirt, you sure aren't going to feel it under a sport's bra, it's thicker!! of course, then there was the day when my prof asked if he could feel under the back of my shirt, and ended up under the sports bra too!! I was like, "EXCUSE ME!!"

we are all grown ups and professional but....i would assume that the teachers go to proper extremes to ensure that guys are paired up with guys and women w/ women-- am i right?? Main reason for asking is that my wife will most likely be attending my omm lab if not:laugh:

Nope...this is NOT a junior high party for Christ's sake! We were required to rotate partners fairly often and strongly encouraged, not truly required, to perform assessments & interventions on folks of both sexes and of a variety of body sizes. Doing OMM on me, a large male, is different than doing the same technique on a small-framed lady.

You are allegedly going to be adult, medical professionals...you need to get over this. You will be looking at your patients' most private regions on a daily basis...believe me, it ain't always pretty; but you got to learn to do it with a mature & professional demeanor.

In OMM lab, your classmates are your patients. I mean get reall...it's not we're all sitting around with coolers full of beer stripping to the disco tunes or doing the "big nasty" in the corner. My Lord, the standard attire for OMM lab I guarantee you is provides much more coverage than the standard bikini for a day IN PUBLIC at the beach.

As someone above pointed out, those of us who possess bodies of chiseled steel or would potentially grace the pages of a high-fashion mag are extremely rare...I sure as hell do not fall into either category! As with many guys, I am an ex-football jock who when the training regimens receeded, the eating habits did not! And, I'd make one hell of a bearskin rug!

I was a tad nervous at first, but quickly lost that when I saw that I was no more uncomfortable and no more of a "freak" than anyone else in the class. Besides, all of us fat & uglies could have easily kicked the @$$es of the 2 or 3 beautiful people!!

Seriously, most everyone will be nervous about it. But, it will quickly pass. You will learn to adopt what I call my "clinical mind set". You will do extensive exams of many people's most private regions, many of them will not be clean and a few of them will be gorgeous.

It will be no more acceptable or appropriate to pinch your nose and yell YUCK when doing a rectal on an unclean, homeless alcoholic any more than it would be to whistle your approval at the appearance of the local college cheerleader coming in for her annual "female exam". This same rule will apply when you do your first trauma -- when some 17-year old partier has wrapped his car around a tree and is oozing blood, brains and other parts are a dangling and you are taking part in trying to save his life -- now is NOT the time to cry, lament or get nauseated cause you got blood & gore up to your elbows -- YOU MUST HAVE YOUR HEAD INTENSELY IN THE GAME.

This is part of becoming a professional. Although it may not be an expressed goal in the OMM syllabus, I can assure you, beginning this transition among friends is far easier than starting it out on the wards. With you buds, you can poke fun, commisurate and have beer & a smile over it. Your patients will not be so accommodating -- they will expect you to already be a professional before you touch them.

They want to believe you are beyond worrying about getting cooties from touching someone of the opposite sex, staring at the mole they have on their @$$ cheek or the fact that their back is hairy enough to make a rug out of it. They want to be seen as a person who has entrusted you with their most precious possession -- their life. And, they want to know that you're not gonna go laughing at their anatomy over a beer later on...again, this is professional development in its infancy. Take advantage of this wonderful opportunity cause not everyone gets to do so.

Bump

I ran into this old thread and thought it was too funny to be passed up by people new to sdn like myself.

well, if guys can wear boxer briefs to battle the inevitable "floppy short" sydrome that quite possibly could expose some more private areas, what the heck can the ladies do?? wearing spandex bike-type shorts under regular shorts would be too thick-- and i'm certainly not going to walk around in spandex shorts all by themselves!? oh if only LECOM let us wear scrubs!!!

You don't have to wear shorts in OMM lab at LECOM - they don't care if you wear pants. So you won't have to worry about floppy shorts!

(And by the way, we only did the stripping and undressing in our first semester 😀 )

Why would the students take off thier shirts? 😕 I thought a "model"(live like art classes) would be presented in class. Anyway, it sounds fun though. Are there students who became horny in such situations?

you just made my day infinitely better, DOtobe
i have a great fear of the floppy short. i'm always that one weirdo doing sit ups in the gym while holding my shorts in place 🙄
congrats on finishing up two years!

haha, this is an absolutely funny thread. i'd also like to know in addition to Far, if anyone has gotten horny during these exercises - i'd imagine it would be kind of HARD to hide it esp for the guys, no pun intended!

i'm big boned!! i'm big boned!!

I much prefer the term festively plump for me😀

i really doubt that this is true, but someone who goes to NYCOM said to be careful because there is some harassment that goes on in OMM> i can't believe that it would be true, and if it was i can't believe that the school wouldn't kick such people out? any opinons? susan

What if somebody has acne on their back? or on their chest? What do you do?

If it happens report it to the human resources or campus ombundsman, if they dont bend over backwards to rectify the situation see the dean if that does'nt work call the Dept. of Education (federal and state). They should come down on the school with the wrath of god.
