I have read some of the other health forums on study groups and I was wondering...for those of you already in pharm. school have you found them to be a good study tactic or at times crucial for being able to understand stuff and get through classes? I've used them in undergrad and found them to be very good at times and well sometimes not because I'll end up talking and get more distracted. Also is your school really big on them?
Thanks 🙂

I've never found a use for study groups.

I do better studying on my own, because I always end up explaining something to someone. Then, I don't get to go over stuff that I need to look at. This last semester, I just did my own studying and my grades improved.

I think study groups help if everybody in the group is on an equal playing field and it doesnt turn into a "help this one person who didnt study" type sesion.

I usually have to study by myself, but then once I have a really good handle on the material I can participate in a group study session.

I'm in a study group for my clinical pharmacy class. We only meet to discuss things the night before the exam, where we take turns asking each other questions. It's been pretty useful.

I'm all for the study groups. A lot of the times knowing that I would be meeting up with my friends would be a motivating factor to actually sit down, 'focus', and study instead of getting distracted by the t.v., internet, and food while studying all by my lonely self.

Our study groups were really good cause we often would explain the concepts to each other and 'argue' about why certain test answer choices were better than others, etc. It really helped to reinforce the material---esp. for ceutics.

Another reason why I loved my study group is that while we were worked productively for 20 minutes and than goofed off for an hour at a time, we really bonded as friends and had a lot of fun.

Normally I like studying on my own, but I have found study groups to be invaluable for certain subjects in pharm school. Each person brings their own strengths (and weaknesses) and you all are better off for it IMO. I think for Med Chem and Bio Chem, having study groups helped me so much. But it sometimes is hard to stay on track when you have a bunch of girltalk to do 😀

thanks for all your input. i kinda figured it might be that way. sometimes helpful...sometimes not. so is it cliqueish (is that a word 🙂) as far as things go with study groups and what not at your school or are people open to welcoming "new" members?
