I know it is different for everyone, but I just wanted to gauge the range of studying involved for everyone on a daily basis.

A.) How many hours of studying per day on the weekdays do you guys put in? (excluding time you spend in class)
B.) How many hours of studying on the weekends?
C.) with the amount of work you are putting in, are you getting the grades required for Dental School? Or do you feel you need more?

Thanks in advance

A.) During the week, 6 hours of serious studying, everyday.

B.) Weekends I study from 12ish - 7 or 8ish(Saturday) -- 6 to 7 hours of serious studying, if it is exam week, then much later. On Sunday around 12ish to 12ish -- maybe 8 hours of serious studying. I personally put in way to much time into studying sometimes, especially during test time.

C.) I believe so -- I hope so.

**Serious study time is like no Youtube break,Facebook break, chatting, etc...**

Is this undergrad?

Studying this much is absolutely rediculous for undergrad...I'm sorry, but if you have to study that much in undergrad to get acceptable grades for dental school...I dont think there are enough hours in a day for you to study while you are actually IN dental school...

Wow, I agree with Tini. Studying that much would have been super excessive for me, personally. I received my BS in microbiology, and I was never good about staying up on the material. For the harder classes like organic, microbial genetics, virology, A&P, etc, I would start studying about 4 or 5 days ahead of time and study in my free time (3-4 hours a day), then the full day before (7 hours or so).. and I always felt like I studied more than other classmates (but I usually did better, too). The one exception was when I took both semesters of physics (with labs) in 8 weeks during the summer. I literally studied all of the time-- I'd wake up at 8, study 'til noon, go to class from noon to four, then study from four 'til 10. It really sucked-- but was worth it in the end.

I study (for undergrad), a few days before a test. I TRY not to cram, but ya know.....😉

I think for undergrad the most important thing for me was going to class. Even if I was half asleep and didn't pay full attention, when it came time to study, I had at least HEARD the information beforehand.

yea u know....it's different for everyone 🙂
But i have to piggy back on Tini's comment.
(That is a bit over the top) are you getting straight A's err... A+'s? You ought to be!

Wow! i couldn't even study 6-7 hours a day for the DAT haha. That's an INTENSE, dedicated schedule!

If OP has to devote that many hours to studying for undergrad material, I highly doubt they can survive dental/medical school.

I should hav ementioned I am in 6 classe. 24 hour class load or 24 credit, whichever way your school does it.

But thanks for telling me im dumb :/ haha

I was wondering how many hours YOU GUYS put in though.

A) On the average day I will put in anywhere from 0-3 hours depending on how many classes I had that day. However, on top of that I carry around a stack of cards with o-chem mechanisms that I pull out and review a couple of times a day while I'm at work.
B) For the last 2 weeks before finals, it has been maybe 6 hours a day, Monday-Saturday, and I don't study on Sundays.
C) I have the grades to get in. Question is do I have the rest of what they're looking for.

My school has a quarter system, so it might be a different situation from yours. I usually take anything from 18-25 units per quarter (max is 19). But I still don't put in as many study hours as you. I'm not saying you're dumb at all. Conversely, I actually respect your dedication and work ethic. I just think that it may be wise for you to streamline your study schedule. Dental school is a lot more work than undergrad, even for people who take over maximum credits like you and me.

To answer your questions:

A.) I usually only have time to put in about 1-2 hours on 2 or maybe 3 weekdays.

B.) I don't study on Fridays or Saturdays. On Sundays, I usually study/do homework for about 3 hours.

*If I have a midterm, I usually put in 4 more hours on the weekend prior and 2-3 more hours the day before. For finals week, I start studying on the weekend prior and continue everyday as the week progresses.

C.) My gpa is decent for the dental schools that I want to get in to. I'm trying to get it up a little higher before I apply in June.

I usually studied 1 or 2 days before a midterm/final, a little longer for ochem. You have a good work ethic for dschool though!

To answer your questions...

A) I studied as much as I can in school (I'm a commuter) ...in b/w classes, waiting for the bus/train, etc etc. Never could really study much at home but always paid attention in classes.

B) It's almost impossible to study during weekends (chores, rides, errands, church, etc) and I don't study on Sunday. Period.

C) Still was able to maintain a 3.9 above GPA and get into dental school like UCSF even taking full load of classes every semester in undergrad. Also rocking the DAT was helpful!

My tip: FOCUS in class and be involved in it by asking questions, participating, etc etc. Cuts the studying load by half 🙂 Sit next to the nerds (always in the front) and you'll do even better.

Hope that helps!! 👍

If studying is homework I do about 3-4 hours a night Mon-Wed.

Usually do a little bit thursday afternoon and just go out for "Thirsty Thursday" 😉

Nothing really friday and saturday.

And just do some work sunday morning and i'm practically done.

WOW!!! That is crazy. Not much of a life left with your spare time.

A.) Mon-Thurs I may study/read 1-2 hours a day. If I have an upcoming exam I will increase my study time the week of the exam. I may go 4-6 hours each day the two days before the test depending on the difficulty of the test.

B.) Never unless I have a project/paper due and that is generally on Friday/Sunday.

C.) I am now. The last five semesters I have had a 3.5+ GPA. :horns:

A)0-12, depending
B)0-12, depending
C)3.98 upper div @ uc berkeley

dont you think your question hinges on how many credits you are taking, what kind of classes they are, what undergrad school you went to, what major you were etc?

i was wondering what you wanted to glean from the responses anyways? just curious, b/c if everyone else studies less than you, then you are stupid. and if everyone studies more than you, then you are lazy, yes? what other conclusions could be possibly drawn from the results of this thread?

dont study hard, study smart.

Great work ethic, but remember to have some fun in there too!!

A/B) Not much studying besides the last 1-2 days before an exam. But then I spend all day studying. Then I also complete homework separately on other days. Sometimes I feel like I have a lot of free time when there aren't any tests soon.

C) I got in, so yeah it worked for me.

I think you need to relax a bit or you could burn out. You are definitely studying more than enough for undergrad! Please go out and have some fun. Now! 😀

Were you trying to boast about how much you study? Then when you were called dumb, you let us in on this information that you take 6 classes?

In undergrad:
A) maybe like 1 or 1 and a half. But the few days before a test, maybe like 4 or 5 hours each day.
B) Weekends? Hrm it depends if I have a test, hmmm.. it REALLY depends.. these questions are so stupid. I'm not answering any more.. Stop studying and start thinking about the questions you post on this site.
C) Yeah I'm in dental school.

Everyday after class I read over the material that was covered in the class the day before.

For example. If I had psych and genetics on day 1 and biochem and literature on day 2. I would read the biochem and literature on day 1 and read the psych and genetics on day 2.

This way I am keeping it fresh and I avoid getting burned out reading the same material that I just listened to for an hour in a lecture.

This amounts to 2 hours total a day during the week.

For exams I start studying a week before the exam. Then I try to put in 6-8 hours of studying (with food breaks obviously lol) the day before the exam and the day of the exam.

I have tried alot of study methods throughout college and this is the one that has given me all the A's.
