Baconshrimps hates classical music, but needs to find something to listen to so they can droun out the sounds of noisy inconsiderate students in the library that don't understand that you're not supposed to be overly audible in the library. What do you listen to when you're studying?

Romantic music>Classical music

Try it!

Goldberg variations
Or for something by The Cancel?

I use this white noise website--drowns out background sounds without being distracting. http://simplynoise.com/
I used to really like their rain option (adjustable intensity, sounded very realistic and soothing to me) but now it costs a $1 to buy. Probably worth it. The white noise option is still free.

EDIT: youtube actually has a bunch of rain noise videos that are pretty good and are multiple hours long.

If you're looking for something peaceful with a nice drum in the back, nujabes is one of my favorite DJs and is great study music. If you're looking for something more upbeat, the MajesticCasual YouTube channel is great to listen to as well.

I enjoy the "Epic Movie Scores" playlist on Songza. Soundtracks from Jurassic Park, Batman, Star Wars, etc aren't distracting but they make whatever I'm studying feel EPIC :headphone::headphone: Memorizing biochemical pathways? Yawn. Memorizing biochemical pathways while being chased by dinosaurs? YES.

Dude, cystathionine beta synthase is my jam. Don't hate, TRANSSULFURATE.

Just type in study music on YouTube. There should be some none classical in there maybe.

Honestly anything by John Williams is pretty awesome for studying

If you guys like film scores, I recommend stuff from Two Steps From Hell. They do a lot of popular trailer music.

I listen to a lot of psytrance, epic/vocal trance, chillhop, lounge, jazz hiphop, experimental, and sometimes classic piano.

This is awesome! I think I'll start using these hour-long videos, especially since Songza went the way of Pandora and started using audio ads.

@baconshrimps ain't got no taste in music 😛

The first 6 or so minutes of this is wunderbar:

And this is epic, because it's in the name. A compilation of finales that should make you feel like you could crush the puny noisemakers under your iron boot of awesomeness:

I can't study to music. I have to dedicate energy into really feeling it and letting flow over my mind. When I try to listen to it while doing something else, I always end up rewinding it and listing to it my itself without distraction.

Wow, this thread really blew up! Thanks for the responses guys. Maybe this can be an official study music thread for pplz looking for new jamz to study to 🙂

death metal.

Also, check out Washed Out, Greg Laswell, Owen, Explosions in the Sky (I think somebody mentioned them already), and anything by Death Cab for Cutie. If you're into ambient, definitely listen to Marconi Union. I recommend "Sleepless", "Hinterland", and "Weightless".

I personally listen to the Dallas String Quartet. I find the sound of violins helps me put my mind at ease. Also the sound of rain/birds chirping (iPhone app, free)

Hobbit soundtrack! Get to feel all epic and adventur-y when in reality you're just sitting there with your books surrounded by books and other people sitting with their books.

Mellow electronica: Bonobo, Tortoise, Massive Attack, Lorn, Little People, Darkside, Twilight Circus.
Jazz: Keith Jarrett, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, Horace Silver, Roy Haynes

This selection sustained me through undergrad and a post-bac, but I suggest using Songza/Pandora/Spotify to explore and find out what works for you.
Enjoy and happy studying!

I shuffle my playlists: currently, I jump between my Spotify starred playlist, my Soundcloud and my hypemachine account.

I gravitate towards Indie/acoustic, chillstep, electropop kind of music.

There's a Pandora station called Classical for Studying. I love it!

Dr goro likes classical, but may I suggest Cyndi Lauper? The Clash? Anything from Bob Dylan in the 1960s!

I'm all over the place with bands like Tool, Breaking Benjamin, Nirvana, RHCP. Not your typical study music, but hey whatever works, right?

Backstreet Boys, NSYNC, New Kids on the Block, Spice Girls.

Skrillex.

BBBBBBBBBWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMPPPP
WUBWUBWUUUUUUUUUUUUBBBSCIENCESCIENCEWUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUB

On a more serious note, I second Pendulum. If the mood is right and you kind of like the more "darker" stuff, I recommend Burial. Great for rainy days, but sometimes I catch myself daydreaming. Then I pop on some August Burns Red and have a wonderfully nutritious bowl of Cinnamon Life to keep the blood sugars up for round 2.

I agree, this is a great thread.

I can't listen to anything with lyrics when studying. Electronic music helps pump me up so I don't fall asleep studying.

For those that still enjoy classical, I really enjoy listening to Ludovico Einaudi while studying.
Agreed - no lyrics while studying. For the best of both worlds, try something like Lindsey Stirling, Bond, David Garrett, etc...electronic music with classical themes/electric string instrumentation. I also like to mix in some straight electronic and some irish folk tunes (or, if Pandora is really on that day, rock/electronic irish jigs!)

Pretty much this station right hurr:

Totally thought this thread was going to be about why people should study music and it's connection to medicine, OH WELL.

These are just generalizations, but here's what I think I would do -
Writing an essay: Sigur Ros/movie soundtracks (LOTR, Gladiator, Inception all come to mind)
General studying: Sufjan Stevens, Beyonce, The Weepies
Doing something repetitive: 90's throwbacks/whatever's popular on the radio now
Prepping for a test: my special playlist 😎

Classical: Bach, Vivaldi, Rachmaninoff -- Baroque and Romantics.
There's a lot of underlying organization to the music that somehow keeps me ticking

I prefer to study while not listening to music, since I can't wear headphones to exams and studying under conditions similar to my exams seems to improve my performance. If you study while chewing gum, chew gum on the exam. If you study on a full stomach, don't skip breakfast before an exam. I always felt that music would throw things off, that when the test rolled around my brain just wouldn't be in the same mode as it was when I learned the information and it just wouldn't come to me. So I would find a quiet place to study or use white noise like another poster recommended.

Glitchy electronic music (EDM/house/electro/trance/whatever) is great for drowning out crowds though.

My favorite study stations on Pandora are "Secret Gardens" and "MCAT Studying"---->whoever created the latter is a genius! I fell in love with the station and I found it by complete accident and ironically I was studying for MCAT!

Also thanks to the person who recommended Ludovico Einaudi this is probably my new favorite pandora station for studying!!

ummmmmmmmmmmm GAME OF THRONESSSSSS!!!

Too slow. In 2hrs you could either:
a) watch the show and advance ~3 chapters into the book
OR
b) read the entire book.

I've tried a few times, but each time I just get super into the books, turn the TV off, and go reread the whole series!

i know but then you miss kaleesi boobage 😀

Here's a lovely tune to study to. Notice the soulful piano solo at the end.

I concur... If you don't like classical music, you aren't listening to the right kind of classical!
