Essay Questions/Personal Statement
I made my essay prompts personal. I included how I came from a first generation graduate household, our financial issues and how I had to work full time through undergrad to help my parents. I talked about how vet-med was my first choice but I was discouraged due to my low GPA (which shows that grades aren't everything!). So I basically gave up on applying to vet school all together, I talked about how I was thinking of taking the PhD route while getting my MS, but how I knew I would probably be miserable during. I was just really honest about why my grades were the way that they are, and that I basically got a MS because I love being in school. I would say that grades are definitely not everything (at least not for MSU). I'm non-traditional, I don't have a ton of vet hours or varied vet experience, my grades were mediocre, so I made other parts of my application shine. I talked about my love of gardening and how working most of my life made me the person I am. Don't let your grades get you down!

After ALL of that, why do you think Purdue denied you?? Their processes of elimination confuse me sooo much. Do you have any clue? I got denied as well with a slightly higher GPA, no masters, and similar amounts of experience.

Purdue didn't deny her, they offered her an interview and she declined it.

How did you get your gpa up, especially the science ?? Did you retake classes or just take additional courses?

How did you get your gpa up, especially the science ?? Did you retake classes or just take additional courses?
I ended up re-taking over 30 credits of courses. One I had to take at my original University, but the others I saved money re-taking at community college. Got 4.0s in about half the courses I re-took. My science GPA only reflects the science and math prerequisites that MSU looks at (which were about 80% retakes).

- Small Animal DVM that I worked for 2 years with (Awesome letter, she let me keep a copy and it was amazingly sweet and inspirational)

- Biochem Professor and advisor
-My employer from Barnes and Noble
(I applied to so many schools and some had specific requirements as to who they wanted letters from. I was not planning on having so many letters.)

Essay Questions/Personal Statement:
Future goals: Emergency Small Animal medicine where I recounted anecdotes from my time as an assistant.
Ways to contribute: I focused on the communication and teaching aspects of veterinarians. Connected it to my customer service skills brought into maturity by retail work and my biochemical background that I have learned to convey to clients at the vet's office.
My attributes: I opened with how a vet I shadowed once told me bitterly that my love of animals wouldn't be enough one day. I then went into talking about my determination and spunk in worst case scenarios. My final line is a part of my objective on my resume: "Veterinary medicine is the field for me, yes because I love animals, but also because I am an analytical mind with a penchant for witty books, scary organic chemistry problems, and calculus questions even Khan Academy doesn't want to touch."

This is one of my first times posting. I would always check out these threads and dismay over my GPA. Now I am so excited to be a part of Cornell's class of 2023 and I hope that I give hope to some of those who may think they don't stand a chance. ---"Don't chase your dreams, run them down."

Congrats to everyone who got in and best wishes for those working on their dream!!!!! You're all wonderful and amazing!!:biglove:

Last 45: 3.85
GRE (Q/V/W): 148/151/5.0 (yikes!)
Degree: B.S. in Biology, Minor in Chemistry as of December ‘18

Veterinary Experience:
- Shadowed Small Animal Veterinary (40 hours)
- Emergency Vet Center Employee (~350 hours)

Animal Experience:
-Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Intern (120 hours)
-Dog Daycare employee (~150 hours)

Extracurriculars/Awards:

Research:
- None

Non-Animal Employment:
- Athletic Academic Tutor (~300 hours)

LORs:
- Emergency vet I worked for the summer before I applied
- Wildlife internship coordinator
- Dog Daycare owner
- Microbiology professor

Essay Questions/Personal Statement:
Future goals: I fell in love with wildlife and avian animals during my internship, so as of now, that is what I hope to pursue in the future.
Ways to contribute: I talked about the different fields a veterinarian can work in aside from the usual clinic or emergency vet center, and how these positions can help with ensuring not only the proper health of animals, but also the health of humans and the world as a whole.
Attributes: Since sports had been a large component of my life, I talked about some of the characteristics I believe I had to balance both a rigorous academic pursuit and heavy physical and time consuming demands: good time management skill, determination, persistence, etc. You know, the usual things.

Going in, I thought my GPA was decent, but I was worried that I did not get enough experience hours to make the cut. I also did pretty poorly on my GRE (except for my writing section; they must have felt bad for me). But like many people say, veterinary schools are looking for lots of different aspects of potential, so being a little lacking in some areas does not mean you're out of the running and should not put you down at all!

I don't mean to sound like a broken record, but congratulations to all of you future veterinarians and my sincerest best wishes to everyone who is still waiting. I know you have all worked so hard for this and I promise it will pay off!

Essay Questions/Personal Statement:
Career goals: Talked about my passion for feline medicine and possibly pursuing the ABVP Feline Specialty
Important attributes: Discussed communication, lifelong learning, and self-care
What vets contribute to society: Talked about TNR programs and impact on public health

Personal Statement: There were two semesters that essentially completely tanked my gpa. I briefly discussed the difficult personal situation that occurred and the impact it had on my life, and the steps I had taken to cope with that difficult situation. I also discussed how I had retaken a few of the courses that I had failed and scored A's. (Unfortunately I'm so super saturated with credits, that it didn't make much movement in my gpas!).

I wanted to share my stats because they're pretty dismal, and I feel like it may give some hope to those out there whose gpa's are in similar spots. If you've been through some rough stuff and your gpa has tanked because of it, don't give up hope! You may not have the widest selection of schools, but if you apply strategically, it is possible. I thought it was pretty awesome that I was offered an interview and waitlisted at Western, especially after hearing it would probably take me a few cycles to get offered an interview anywhere in the US. Honestly, I think having awesome letters of rec from people that know me well and my experiences helped to make it possible. I really tried to discuss all the leadership opportunities I've taken on over the years and the importance of good communication skills. I will most likely end up attending Ross, as honestly I would have to spend so much money and time retaking courses to stand a shot at most schools (and there's obviously no guarantee I would even get in anywhere next cycle). Whatever happens this fall, I'm excited to begin my journey as a veterinary student.

EDIT: Decided to attend Ross in May (instead of waiting to hear about Western waitlist) after calculating COL for each area. Excited to start school at Ross :)

My advice is to take your time. You may hear from Lincoln still - though I think that and Western are private schools right?

Think of it this way, if you decide to upgrade by retaking courses - are you 1) sure you will get high grades, 2) sure that 10 classes with those grades will move you up significantly, and 3) be happy retaking those courses and reapplying again next year and maybe or maybe not getting in?

Attending SGU, Western or Lincoln is more expensive than whatever your instate is and probably half or so out of state schools. However, do the calculations. How much will it cost you to retake your classes (do you need to cut back on work hours, rent etc). Does it save you 5 grand by hopefully getting into your instate, or does it save you 30 grand. If its only 5 grand, then to me its not worth the wait and retake.

For example I got accepted to the RVC, at a cost of 60 000 CAD a year. My home province is 10 000 CAD a year, and the Canadian school I'd like to attend is the same. However to attend out of province in Canada you need to be a resident first. So I looked at my stuff and said, "Okay if I don't get accepted to a Canadian school this year and reject my offer from the RVC, I would have to move to another province for 1 year to gain residency and then wait 8 months for results from that application cycle. And that is 20 months down if I got in on my first try which is NOT guaranteed.

So I worked it out, and if the RVC is the only school I get accepted to then I'll go there. Why? Because I wouldn't be happy living in the middle of nowhere away from my friends and family working a minimum wage job just to have a shot at veterinary school. If I can go to the RVC and come out as a vet 2 years earlier then yes I will do that cause I'd be happy, even if it meant more debt.

Best of luck!

Obviously all of my responses were a little different but I feel like the general theme had to do with my moving around a lot while growing up and my interest in One Health/lab animal medicine. My undergraduate university is a huge Med school and is very research oriented, so it was always discouraging that I didn’t have other pre-vet students to talk to and get advice from. Finding the lab animal vets at my school really helped me find my passion for helping animals while also making progress in areas of human health as well.

I'm still in shock that I was accepted this cycle. The strongest part of my application (IMO) was my LORs and my essay/statement responses. Although I'm not sure what my LORs said, I made sure to choose individuals that could showcase different aspects and strengths I sometimes forget I possess. As for my essay/statement responses, it took all summer for me to develop them and I relied heavily on my friends for proofreading and bouncing ideas off.

I assume there’s also the potential for wiche funding since New Mexico resident, but still probs WSU I’d think?
ooooo if that evens the playing field pick CSU
but yes otherwise wsu will def be cheaper, and more developed than OSU I know...
Midwestern, they're private so do they do wiche?

No. CSU still is about 10k more per year for wiche. Do not pick CSU.
And MWU is doing wiche this year as its first. So who knows how high their wiche price is.

Actually all the schools I applied to are WICHE schools. And the funding is so significant this cycle that pretty much all the schools are within the same price point. WSU is my cheapest school an Midwestern is the most expensive but it’s only a $3000 difference per year.

They actually do wiche! Which makes The difference in tuition between WSU and Midwestern only ~$3000 per year!
And the difference between CSU and WSU only $2000 per year. So like see my dilemma??? Lol.
But I truly am ok with that much debt difference in the end. Especially if it means being closer to home because my family told me that as long as I go somewhere close, they will visit me more often. So I think this has to be something that I consider.
Also, being from NM and going to Washington, if that is where I decide to go, we will not be renting a UHAUL to take all my stuff up. But if I go somewhere closer we will.
So still... see the dilemma? lol.

Oh really? I spoke with the director of admissions at CSU about what my tuition would be and it was like identical to Washington State (literally $400 more than WSU). She said that they charge me the IS tuition and wiche will disperse the remaining ~$8000 to me so I can use towards tuition.

Maybe her and I totally don’t understand WICHE but my WICHE Officer told me that you take the OOS tuition and subtract the amount of funding and the difference is what I pay “out of pocket”. Do you know if maybe this isn’t correct by chance?

No idea, I was going off the chart on the vmcas page that lists all of the schools tuitions and their price for wiche applicants which is what I was going by. *shrug*

Heres some prospective from price point. I was a CO resident and I went to WSU because of price. Im saving 30k overall by going to WSU even paying OOS tuition year 1. Yes you will get charged IS price for WSU and CSU. However CSU will go up ~7% every year. It's been like that for years and I dont forsee that changing based on CO economic and political climate. Tuition should be approx 45k per year by the time 2022 rolls around. Also COL in Ft. Collins is more than Pullman. The apartment I'm in right now I pay ~800. The same exact apt in ft Collins goes for ~1200. Yes you can do things like roommates etc but it's still more expensive in CO. Midwestern is by far your most expensive option.

Not sure what numbers people are looking at but csu is ~36k/year while wsu is currently at 27k/yr for tuition price. Its definitely not a $400 difference.

Also dont forget that the 3k difference per year has ~6.5-7.5% interest on top of it so that ends up being alot more money in the end than just 12k overall.

Idk about you but I can do alot of cool fun stuff with 12k+. Just for an example of unforeseen expense, car permanently broke and I could practically buy a new small SUV with that much money.

Also on the family aspect thing I get seeing family and it's important for mental health. Heck my dad got a suprise work trip to spokane. It was nice for sure but at the same time I wouldnt want any of my family visiting very often eventhough I am really close with my parents. I will say most people during school unless it's a like 3 day weekend or longer dont want visitors because of how busy we are. Most of my classmates wont even drive 1.5 hrs to spokane to visit family on the weekends because they can be more productive here without them.

Also why would you not rent a uhaul if you moved to WA?

I spoke to my wiche people. Your wiche officer is most correct. So you get charged OOS by each school. Then your wiche disbursed for the difference. If theres still a monetary difference then the school usually scholarships the difference (case of WSU students from AZ). So essentially you are charged the same price as IS. Now the difference between OOS and IS at WSU is greater than CSU but CSU IS is more expensive and I know that the CSU wiche people pay more for their education as my wiche AZ friends have wiche AZ people at CSU. But yes contact the schools to get the best idea of what numbers might look like come fall.

In general the funding from WICHE gives you IS tuition at one of the WICHE schools. CSU is ~10k more per year than WSU or OSU in JUST tuition. Living expenses will be higher as well. CoA for an IS student at CSU was $56k this year, WSU was $44k. WSU also has had very stable tuition, and last year was the first increase is something like 6 years, and they don't plan to increase it this year again as far as I know. CSU tution WILL increase every year. But even if it didn't that $12k difference will be $48k over four years. That's a BIG difference.

Cost of living is really cheap in Pullman vs Fort Collins, and I've taken out less than $39k each year. This will be the first year I do, and that's only because 4th year means I won't be able to work during the summer to cover expenses.

Has MWU given you any clue on if they're going to give you a lower tuition as WICHE? Cause right now their tuition is like $60k/year. Even with $25k/year WICHE funding, they're still going to be as expensive as CSU.

Go with WSU or Oregon State. They're your cheapest options. All four will give you a great education, but you have to think about long term consequences of taking out more loans.

No real advice to give lol, but others have chimed in with good points. The only thing I can say is to get the tuition/fees numbers from each school IN WRITING. As others have mentioned, even though WICHE gets you the IS tuition rate for each school, those rates could vary a great deal between schools. From there you can start to compare COL (SDN peeps are a great resource). Fortunately you have plenty of time to make your decision.

So is the tuition on WSU’s page just incorrect, possibly?
Because the out of state tuition that I see at the link http://dvm.vetmed.wsu.edu/finances/cost-of-attendance
says that the Pullman campus OOS tuition is $63,112 (for tuition ONLY).

So I would be being charged the OOS tuition all four years and WICHE would be just giving me the money to bring that tuition down.

Tuition ONLY at Midwestern is $61,921 which appears to be less than OOS at WSU.

Do I just literally not understand the way WICHE works? :(
I feel very, very confused now.
Because it seems that tuition at MWU would be less than tuition at WSU.

You’re looking at the wrong chart on that page. You need to look at the Pullman one for WA, ID, and WICHE. Those are the rates you’ll be charged after WICHE funding. WSU does give scholarships to make sure WICHE has IS tuition if funding doesn’t cover the difference.

Edit: you are correct you’re charged OOS rates, but in general you’re brought down to IS rates after funding, which is why Oregon state or WSU will be your cheapest options by far :)

Also keep in mind that as with tuition going up at CSU, the cost of living will most likely continue to go up as well. The $1200 apartments very well may be 1400-1600 by the time you reach 4th year. That extra cash at 6.5-7.5% adds up quickly.

GRE (Q/V/W): 157/161/5. Definitely above average, but not by a ton.

Experience:
~3500 hours of vet experience between two hospitals.
~200 hours of goat reproduction research

Animal Experience:
~300 hours with seeing eye puppy raising club
~50 hours in an evaluation and selection class

LORs:
Two vets I worked for. Both were practice owners. One vet was foreign, the other went to Penn. I wrote the LOR for my foreign vet with some guidance since his English wasn’t the best and he signed off on it.
Research professor
Veterinary and medical entomology professor

At the end of the day, I think I got into penn for a few reasons: I interviewed pretty well, I’m in-state, I’m a guy, I live in Philly anyway, I have lots of experience, and my GRE was pretty good. Overall, I didn’t expect to get in. Especially after three flat-out rejections front schools I felt pretty good about. However, I also thought I screwed up part of the interview at Penn. They asked “why Penn” as they ask for every Penn interview, no matter the school. I essentially said I was raised to think that VMD’s are the best of the best, the cream of the crop. They asked me that, since they were DVM’s, did I think they were inferior. Immediately inserted my foot into my mouth. One of the interviewers seemed to check out after that. So that got me really worried. That’s actually the interviewer who ended up calling me, and he was really nice.

The redeeming factor for my interview was that I had a TON of medical knowledge. They asked me what my roles are as a tech and I said basically everything the doctor doesn’t do. Help with surgery, manage anesthesia, etc. They drilled me on which agents I use for anesthesia, how to know which are contraindicated and when, which parameters in bloodwork correspond to which organs and why that’s important, and some of their miscellaneous questions similar to that. I answered every one correctly because I love learning about this kind of stuff and my current doctor always gives me cases to solve. He’ll give me the full workup and patient chart when I walk in in the morning and say “what’s wrong with this pet?” If I answer incorrectly, he’ll walk upstairs to make coffee and say that I have until he comes down to figure out why i was wrong. He’s smiling and nice about it when he does it, so obviously there are no consequences to getting anything wrong. He just knows I love to learn and wants me to figure out the answers on my own. I attribute every correct answer I gave in my interview to him.

Essays:
I just talked about how I have wanted to be a vet since I was raised in a rural community and that I want to give back to my community. I especially talked about how devoted and passionate I am about animal health.

Interviews:
In my interviews I really made it a point to draw from all my experience, not just vet med related experience. I talked about how volunteering with the homeless has even shown me how vet med is important in that community and how I have gained skills even from working at a froyo shop.
For future (or current) applicants, if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out. I would love to talk. :)

When did you interview for Washington? Thought OOS interviews just started Monday. That's quick. Anyway, great for you and pick the cheapest school.

Congratulations!! What an interesting interview story lol! I would've been sweating in my boots with the in-depth anesthesia Qs! Always love hearing about folks who may seem "average" on paper but are extraordinary in other categories. I'm sure you'll rock vet school!

You have a CRAZY good number and diversity of experiences!!! Hats off to you

Just curious, what was being an ASPCA responder like? It sounds really interesting!

Haha it was the thing I had the most control of! Had to make up for my GPA.

Being an ASPCA responder was pretty cool. I was involved several years ago (like 5) with a couple cases involving fighting animals. In those cases I went with a team (other volunteers from my shelter); the A pays for flights, hotels, meals, but it is a week commitment. Once I transferred to a university I had less time and money to do those ventures but I have been once since as a solo volunteer which I'll tell ya means a lot less comradery but they've all been valuable.
