Does anyone know of a reputable institution from which I could take a distance learning course for credit? I will be starting medical school next fall, assuming that I get an acceptance, and would like to get a few MPH classes under my belt this spring. Am particularly interested in epidemiology and international health.

Thanks!

The first place that pops into my head when I hear the words "distance learning" and "international health" is Johns Hopkins. Although a number of schools have distance programming in public health, the courses at JHU may best suit your interests. However, distance learning doesn't make things cheaper, and I'm pretty sure that you'd be paying the same fees without the benefit of having physical access to your professors. Some courses are just best done in person, and I'd think that unless you absolutely cannot take courses in person (e.g., due to work, no SPH proximal to you, etc.), it might be worthwhile to try to hop into a few courses at a school near you.

Heal & Teach,
Thanks for the reply! Have you taken any of the courses at JHU? Any suggestions for classes that might be more conducive to the distance learning approach?

Thanks!

Hi-
I am a former TA for one of Hopkins larger, distance based programs (Epi). I do believe it costs the same as on-site tuition, but not sure. The benefit is that you listen to the lectures , complete exercises, and what not on your own time. However, it is a huge time commitment and you have to be disciplined enough to go "to class" regularly. You are also required to have on line "lab projects" with assigned work groups comprised of other distance learning students. In my opinion, I do think the loss of inter-personal interaction slows the learning process a bit- but my learning style is very interactive. Of note, if you do a internet based MPH, you do have to do some classes on site- usually at an accelerated pace during the summer term to accomodate tight schedules and distance.

Side note: My husband is getting a degree in distance education at another university and its been incredible. He never would have been able to complete a second masters degree otherwise. I was really impressed.

Back to JHBSPH: The program has grown ENORMOUSLY since I worked there. Many more options are available and the technology has presumably advanced, although I haven't been in an on-line class for a few years to vouch for it credibly.
