Hello all,

I recently got accepted into dental school and I'm very excited to attend. I graduated from college last May and I have been taking this year off to work and make money. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I could prepare for dental school come August. I've been out of school for over 6 months now and I'm starting to worry about the rigorous course load that lies ahead of me. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I'm in the same situation. Working at a job that I hate right now, but the pay is not too shabby.

Like many others that have posted on numerous other threads relating to this topic, I'm of the opinion (after reading their responses to this situation) that you should take this time to relax. As such, I'll be quitting my job in 2 mos. to do some traveling.

I'm not too concerned about the time off (but, maybe I should be...). Maybe some current dental students have different opinions/insights.

First of all, CONGRATULATIONS!
Second, I wouldn't to anything except enjoy your family/friends and just relax. Yes the course load is rigorous, but after a few months you get acclimated and it's not so bad. The initial feeling, at least for me, was HOLY CRAP this is a lot of material and there is no way I'm going to get through it all. You just have to transition from the undergrad study habits to the dental school study habits and you will find your groove.

Good luck

1. Enjoy every minute you can before DS starts. It's precious.

2. Do not prepare in any manner. Do what you enjoy, come to DS relaxed and ready to bust out of the gate. Be fresh

3. You will acclimate. You'll understand what is important, prioritize, stress, and become accustom to dental school. There will be others who have been a lot a lot longer. You're not the only fish in this situation.

Have a good time, travel, hang with friends, but maybe save up a little money if you can.

Everyone is in a different situation, but hear quite a few people say they wish they had a little more money than what they get through loans. Despite how busy you will be, there never seems to be a lack of fun stuff to do with all your new friends during the first couple of years of dental school. Bar crawls, lake/mountain trips, mission trips, etc. I personally had to spend quite a bit of money to move my family and get situated, which you might have to do, too.

Have fun, and good luck once school starts!

Having the work experience might help as d-schools expect you to behave like a health care professional from the very beginning. Read up on the dress code, show up on time, do what you are told, put on a happy face, be nice. OK, so it feels like kindergarten. Just remember that if dental school doesn't work out you may need to go back to your old boss to beg for your job back.

Just enjoy it man, once school starts it will be a rollercoaster ride, you can't work yourself up too much before it starts. The best thing to do right now is not to think about dentistry at all.
Good luck

Thanks for all of the advice. I'm noticing a consistent theme with these posts. I'll be sure to enjoy the precious time off I have now until school begins.

I envy you since I will only have 2 months to relax and get situated before DS. As said above, just enjoy the free time.

This was good thread, I was wondering the same thing. I have about 5 months until school starts I guess I'll just work to make/save some money. I am definitely not complaining about having all this free time 👍

Much like everyone has said, RELAX. If you're overeager to start and hit the ground running (and want to make some money before school starts), see if you can get a job in a dental lab. It may make life easier down the road but its nothing you can't pick up once you start school. Personally, I would take a vacation and travel.

Don't stress out about it. I had not had a single college course in 9 years when i started dental school. It was a little challenging being in my 30's and out of school for 9 years, but that lasted for the first semester. I didn't do bad, but it wasn't quite was I had done in college. The second and third semesters, I excelled.

You will have only been out for a little over a year. That is nothing to worry about. If anything, you'll benefit from a year off because you will enter with a fresh mind and will have had a college courseload only about a year ago.
