If folded in half, can these be carried onto the plane as carryon?

Tell him to carry the jacket part on and put it in the overhead compartment. Your friend can iron the pants later at the hotel. If your friend it that worried, he can fly first class and they will hang his jacket for him 🙂
Yes, I've done just that. My suit was very minimally wrinkled (actually hardly at all!).
If possible, you may also hang the garment up in a closet on the airplane. Sometimes if there's room in the first class closet, a person riding in coach can sqeeze in their garment bag.
Great! Yeah, I was really wanting to carry the garment bag on with me. Ok, here's another question. How many carryons can we take? I know it's one carryon plus one personal item. So, can I carry on the garment bag plus a backpack (purse will be inside backpack)?
They might not allow you to take a garment bag plus a back pack. I would suggest attaching them together so it looks like one unit of luggage.
Just my opinion. In general, I think you should be fine though 😉
I took my garment bag and backpack and was able to use both for carry on. They allowed me to hang my garment bag in the closet, but it also fits in the overhead compartment. You can also take your backpack and place it underneath the seat in front of you. Make sure you put your purse in your backpack, otherwise you won't be able to have backpack and purse as carry on.
I take my suitcase on the plane. I would like to avoid showing up at my interview in shorts and a t-shirt because the airline lost my luggage.

I bought an inexpensive steamer and packed it in my suitcase. Night before the interview I hung up my suit and used it😀
Other than a garment bag, is there a special suitcase that can be purchased? That you can neatly fold up your suit and place it in?
just did the garment bag. No wrinkles and used it as my carry-on. That being said, the flight attendants on the plane weren't super stoked that I was trying to hang a sizeable bag in the little closet thing at the front of the plane.
They're nutso about overhead bins now that everyone is carrying on to avoid the huge bag check fees. Self inflicted I guess 🙂

I flew all across the country with my suit in a garment bag, and then my carry on luggage. If you look at most airline websites, it says that the garment bag is basically considered your personal item. It worked really well in keeping my suit nice. Most airlines will let you hang it up. Alaska airlines and American was pretty good about doing that...
