Do american dental schools look at summer courses for cgpa calculations?

I'm sure it's a repost, but I did a search and I got about 900 hits.

Yes it's calculated into your AADSAS GPA. That said, they really prefer that you don't take your science pre-requisites during the summer.

Ok, thanks mila.

Why wouldn't they prefer it?

"Knowledge is food for thought so I wisely swallow."

Because most schools want to make sure you can handle taking a lot of science courses at the same time. Taking your pre-requisites during the summer does little to prove this ... and might even suggest the opposite.

i disagree with the 2 posters that said avoid taking pre-reqs over the summer... i took bio1, chem2, organic 2, and physics 1 over the summer... it's a non-issue. just take the courses and do well. period.

jb!🙂

I'm not trying to say that if you take pre-req's over the summer, you'll never be able to get into dental school. I actually took two pre-req's (Physics I and Physics II) during a summer session and have already received an acceptance. I just wanted to share that I have, on multiple occasions, heard admissions reps express that they're looking for students that can handle a heavy load of science courses as undergrads. If you take all your science courses spaced out during separate summer sessions, it may be a lot more difficult to prove that you won't be overwhelmed in d-school.

Agreed! All I was saying is that if you can avoid taking science classes over the summer, it will look a lot better.
I've heard this from many people on dental school admissions committees. When they look at your science grades, they take into consideration if you took them during school year or summer, and if youdoubled up on sciences... I'm sure this isn't new information to anyone.
