I graduated with a degree in math and physics so I'm trying to pick up the upper level bio courses that most dental schools "recommend." I'm taking biochem, genetics and intro to psych during this upcoming spring semester. However I still want to take cell bio, micro, etc. and am thinking about taking one of them over the summer

I was wondering if dental schools would look upon it unfavorably if I were to take a course like cell biology over the summer? I'm just wondering if they wouldn't like the fact that the course is condensed into six weeks?

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated as I'm trying to plan out the next year.

Thanks in advance!

I don't think dental schools would look upon summer courses unfavorably. Although the classes are condensed into six weeks, they are still the same amount of hours per week as they would be during the normal Fall/Spring semester. Also, the classes you want to take are not the required courses, just the recommended courses. Some applicants don't even take these classes. So it will look better on your part that you are taking these advanced classes, even if you are taking them during the summer.

That's what I think, but to get the best answer, you should actually call the dental schools you are interested in and ask them.

Also, did you take the DAT already?

Summer courses are not the best idea, especially for the pre-reqs. However, you already have a science based degree and are taking the recommended courses over the summer...I wouldn't think it will pose a problem for you at all.

Thanks for feedback, all I'm looking for is people's opinions and experiences but I will definetly take your advice and ask the schools.

I took the DAT on 10/30/07. My scores are

PAT 21
BIO 19
GD 18
OC 21
QR 18
RC 17
AA 19
TS 19

Thanks for you input!

Anybody else take courses over the summer?

My school University of Toronto (Scarborough Campus) is trimestered - so I assume all courses regardless of time taken are equal

Summer courses are not viewed unfavorably, particularly if they are offered at a non-community college institution. I took a summer course (organic) during one summer at my college, and another at the University of Oslo, Norway (however, this course was not a pre-req. to dental school--just me pursuing other academic interests for a summer!)
Summer courses are a great way to get more classes under your belt.
There is a histology course offered online through the University of Colorado that comes highly recommended from the office of admissions at the U of MN.

I took summer classes as well. I took the physics series last summer. It took a lot of time out of my summer, but satisfied the requirement.
