SUNY Buffalo Accepted Students!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You're an anal premed (as am I), get yourself an MSAR, and do searches before posting. Anyhow, i'll do ya a favor.

not sure about accepted, they dont release that. Well, US news has that, get yourself a copy of that too.

Hiya everyone 🙂
Well it looks like it's for sure now! I was one of the ones who did NOT get the accept e-mail from Yale today, so I'm almost certainly coming to Buffalo. It's a bit of a relief, to tell you the truth, because (shhhh) I actually LIKED Buffalo better when I visited than I liked Yale! The curriculum, the people, etc. were a far better fit for me, and if I had gotten into Yale I might have been pressured into going because of its ranking... stupid ranking. Anyway I'm now getting SUUUUPER excited and going out for Buffalo Wings after work to celebrate.
I think I asked this question before, but when I put all my stuff together for the second look weekend, I didn't know that Saturday was going to be a big fun night for meeting students and prospective students, so I only have a hotel room for Friday night and am supposed to fly out Saturday evening. Do you guys (current UBers) think it would be a good idea to try and stay Saturday as well (though I think there are no hotel rooms left at the special rate... eek!) Maybe I can try and get late with-student housing for just Saturday?
Yaaaaay I'm so psyched about this right now I'm going to go start the SUNY Buffalo Class of 2010 thread on the Allo forums if it's not there yet 🙂
See y'all in April!
Love,
Pepper

If I didn't still live with my parents, I'd offer you a place to stay Saturday night. I was actually reminding myself about the things I liked about UB in conversation last night -- most of the people there come from diverse backgrounds and might not be 4.0 GPA/30 MCAT students, but they worked their butts off to get where they are. I get a lot of slack for not getting out of Buffalo; I will for residency! Friday nights are quiter as far as the downtown scene goes, but maybe a low key night at the martini bar or something could be arranged?

Hi guys, I just moved and I can't find my scholarship letter. I'm trying to finish my app, and I'm wondering if anyone can post the info from the letter. I know we were supposed to write an essay saying why we think we should get the scholarship, but I was wondering if there were any other important points. Like, where to send the application, what to enclose if you're applying for needbased (tax forms)..Any specifics would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I'm too lazy to dig out the paper right now, but I'm quite sure that what they want with the essay is copies of the first 2 pages of both yours and your parents federal tax returns, the amount of debt you currently have, and how you plan on paying for med school (if anyone has a plan other that loans, I'm impressed). The essay was just a chance for you to write about any financial hardships you might have or explain anything that might not come up on a normal financial aid form. Mine was a total of 2 pages, minus the copies.

MySillyum, welcome to the insanity 😛

Hi all, still here 🙂
I got my plane ticket changed to Sunday and am staying an extra night so I can hang out with y'all on Saturday night for 2nd look! However, I talked to the person coordinating the events and she said there's a formal on Saturday night for students or something? So us prospectives may have to fend for ourselves. We should all plan something for that night!
Any takers?

I say downtown Buffalo people!

Huh forgot about the formal.

That just means we'll all have to go out on Friday night too .

what do we wear at the 2nd look????

There's a whole thread about this...sounds like the consensus for second look was "business casual" (aka: no suit necessary, but ironed pants and a button-down shirt might not be a bad idea)

That being said, I got a phone call today asking for my $100 deposit...whoops!

Hey everyone!
I'm starting to get excited!!!! Have you guys looked at the housing links? I think there's a housing weekend in June or July when we can figure out where we're going to live, etc. Any of you in the know have any advice about living situations? I think they gave us 3 options for "near campus apartment" housing. I've been trying to figure out roommate/no roommate, shuttle to campus/no shuttle.
What are your guys' thoughts?

The "I'm going to be a doctor?!" is really starting to set in for me 🙂

My parents actually live in North Buffalo, so staying at home (and possibly buying a car) is a very likely senario for me first year. After that, I'd like to get a place closer to where most of the hospitals are. I need my own room, but I would like 1 or 2 roommates. Hopefully the $38k/year in loans I've been offered will make that possible 😉

No problem

hope 2 see in B-LO!

Did everyone else who is signed up for second look get that e-mail about the med/pharm school mixer on friday night? Who wants to go with me? 😛

I've been reading your posts! I was early admission too! And like you, I'm ready to duck when I tell people I didn't have to take the MCATs either 😛

I think they interviewed all the early-admission people on the same day so I've probably met you already 😳)

I feel better now knowing I have a ducking partner...

Hey! I was wondering about housing too... I'll be at the housing weekend in June, but I was thinking of taking a trip up to Buffalo to get a better idea before that too... I'm from NYC so I really have no clue about the area minus Niagara Falls 😛

Hey everyone. This post is for those who got accepted to UB and are definitely going (Class of 2010).
Where is everyone from? What do you all do for fun, etc.
I think it will be pretty cool to know or maybe even meet some people before school starts.

I will be first:
I'm from the Buffalo area and can't wait to attend UB
I love the school, people, and the area.
I like to work out, run, go out and hang out w/friends, etc.
Now, who watches the Simpsons???? 😛

well, hopefully everyone writes back and maybe those in the area could all meet up one night.

Thanks guys!

I'm such a dork... this whole forum thing still has me excited, and I guess since I can't meet ya'll for the weekend, I'll post on here 😉

I am from NYC, though I recently moved to Long Island and I go to UPenn/Villanova in Philly
I was an early-acceptance student so I haven't been to Buffalo in 2 years and it's really hitting me now that I'm going to med school!
I love to dance, procrastinate, go out and party hard, sit on people in the subway, and in honor of the prospect of spending 4 yrs in Buffalo... am in the process of learning how to ski/snowboard 😀

I am definitely taking a trip up to Buffalo the week after my graduation (May 22nd - 25th) so I would love meeting anyone in the Buffalo area if you guys are free at all!

Also I'll be bumming around, enjoying my last few months of freedom, in nyc allll summer long so anyone even remotes close by, let me know!

All you guys who are going or already at Buffalo this weekend, have a blast!

Hi Folks,

I've noticed that a LOT of people from NYC are trekking it up to Buffalo for med school. Why is this? I can't imagine the city of Buffalo is all that appealing to those accustomed to NYC. Just curious as to why people have chosen Buffalo over other schools, if they had a choice.

In particular, I'm trying to figure out what Buffalo has on Stony Brook. The decision of where to go to school has been wearing me down, and I'd like to get some feedback if possible. Stony Brook appears to have the most stellar reputation out of all the SUNYs, but is Buffalo that much different in terms of the education they have to offer? I'd appreciate any thoughts.

I can't really answer to that since I was accepted early to UB and that had a lot to do with my decision to go to Buffalo.

I think if given the option, I'd go to Stonybrook to be honest because of the weather, the location and being close to my family. You're right, it also does rank higher in the SUNY system. However, in terms of academic programs, I'm not sure what the difference is. I know Buffalo recently revamped theirs not too long ago to improve scores on the boards and match results... but as for the specifics, I'm sure you can just call up the schools and ask - most would be happy to defend their own, and since they're both SUNY's, I'm sure you'll get a fair reply either way.

Good luck with your decision (I know it's stressful!)... if you do decide to come to Buffalo, we'll see you soon 🙂

Being from the burbs of NYC, and having gone to Stony Brook for a year, I didn't really enjoy the undergrad atmosphere there. From what I've heard, the med school atmosphere seems better, but still the thought of living in the middle of nowhere Long Island while paying twice as much as I'd pay in Buffalo, doesn't seem too appealing.

SB med has a pretty good reputation in New York, but the board scores for UB and SB are very close, if not the same, from year to year. So judging my board scores alone, UB and SB are on the same level. SB affords you more bench research opportunities, but that would come in handy if you were going for MD/Ph.D. So what it really comes down to is whether you want to live for four years in Long Island or Buffalo.

Thanks for the replies. In terms of location and family, I would much rather be in Buffalo, but if SB has that much more to offer than Buffalo, I'd be willing to live on Long Island for 4 years. From my inexperienced point of view, however, it seems like their programs are fairly similar (I'd love to know if I'm wrong!); SB just has a better reputation for whatever reason. Does anyone know why??

Yuuuuuck, I'm stuck inside on a gorgeous Saturday writing up lab reports! I hope the people at second look are having a blast 🙂

Gluon's post reminded me about SB's rep... it IS based a lot on its research-oriented goals. It's smiliar to how professors at certain institutions do research on the side to enhance their university's rep - it doesnt necessarily reflect the quality of education. I haven't looked into medical schools for a while but I do remember reading/hearing that UB's program is more clinical and primary-care oriented, whereas, like Gluon said, SB is more research and phD-type geared.

As much as I'd love to be near friends, family, and NYC, I'm looking forward to being in Buffalo because I feel that it will be easier to focus with less distractions (I remember how hard it was to focus going to HS in downtown Manhattan!)... then again, I'm a person who likes changes and meeting new people... 🙂

hey it is min-kyung
it was very nice to meet some of you on second look day.
i wish i had stuck around a little bit in the afternoon, but what was i thinking? i couldn't see much without my contact lenses and kind of forgot about where i was and why i was there. so i left!!!

anyhow, i hope you all had a good time and hope to see you in the fall.

maybe we should organize another get-together before school starts when almost everyone has arrived in the first week of august.

i guess my take on this is that you should pick a place that would make you happy. sb and ub are in the end both suny schools. if we work hard while in med school, we are going to get our choice of residency program. in addition, it is not like you are picking between harvard and sb or ub.

so choose a school that you feel that you will be happy with.

I hear that there tends to be a bit of partying orientation week...
That's what I like about UB. People work hard, but then they play hard when it comes time 😉
You're planing on living alone? I know you're not the only one...will you be coming for housing day? We might be looking for a third person (girl, specifically). If you have any Qs about areas or want me to drive by something and take a look for you since I'm in the area, let me know since I'll be out on the hunt myself!

Anyone know when we get info on housing weekend? I know it's sometime in June, but who decides and how soon do we know? I want to make plans to visit some friends over the summer and I need to book airline tickets...

... butt, I also don't want to miss housing weekend!

I need to find a cool roommate!!! Oh, and apartment as well 😛

Yea, I would like to know when it is as well.
Sure, I'm in Buffalo and I can drive around and look at places, but I need some roommates to actually pick one out 😛 I also need to know when I can plan a weekend city getaway!
I'd like it to be in the begining of June because ideally I'd sign a lease starting in July, but if it's at the end of June, maybe you guys will be here to go out for my birthday!

Hi Everyone!!!! I just got my acceptance letter two days ago - got in off of the waitlist and could not be happier!!!!

I grew up in Brooklyn, NY.
I am visiting Buffalo again memorial day weekend! I love Buffalo from what I've seen so far and I'm sooo very excited to become a new member of the community!
I'm an artist - paint and sculpt, work out religiously and maintain a really healthy diet. 🙂 I somehow always wind up assuming the proverbial maternal role amongst my friends 🙂 - but not in an overbearing psycho mommy dearest way ! I might throw a couple extra veggies on your dish if you had dinner at my place...maybe offer you a multivitamin? I'm assembling a little library of easy to apply nutritional info if anyone is interested! Would like to start a "library of consciousness" with thought-provoking documentaries and films. Anyone seen "what the bleep do we know?"
I don't watch the simpsons much but I really like the discovery channel and NOVA! 🙂)
Can't wait to meet all of you! I hope we will become great friends!
