hm...lets see what happened to me today. I found a quarter on the street, ate a hot dog for lunch, got into UB, went to the gym. Oh did i mention, I found a quarter on the street?

I've been all smiles since 4pm. I had been staring at my monitor for a while so when Mr. Rosso called, I thought I was dreaming. But then I went online and checked my status and YES! i was accepted. Man, this has been a long time in coming, and feel a sense of relief like no other.

For those that are curious, I was in the bottom of the middle third. And, yes, Mr. Rosso called me, even though they aren't supposed to be calling until tommorow. From the looks of it, the waitlist should go pretty deep this year.

bonne chance

Congrats samiam! That's great news!

But now I'm confused because I could've sworn I was in the middle of the middle third but still haven't heard from them. 🙁 Should I call tomorrow or am I just being paranoid?

Hello everyone,
I was in the middle of the middle and I received the phone call this morning, 8:57 am. In front of my whole office, I was wildly gesticulating and mouthing "Buffalo!" at my boss and coworkers. It was great. Mr. Rosso just identified himself, asked to speak to me, then offered me admission, I accepted, he verified my address and then told me the first day of class is August 8th. That was it. Best phone call ever.

And I do believe that my alternate list letter said today (not tomorrow) was the first day they called people, I noticed that a few people seemed confused about that. 😳

Congrats samiam and Supercluster! I'm PM-ing you the e-mail address of the guy in charge of the housing weekend, let him know that you've just been accepted and have him send you the registration form.

naimist: Definitely call tomorrow. I think that people have gotten inconsistent info about their position on the waitlist - make sure you speak to Mr. Rosso and Mr. Rosso only. Also, if you haven't been in contact since the waitlist was trimmed back in April or whenever it was, I think everyone's position changed at that point. I was in the middle-middle 1/3rd but moved up to the upper-middle 1/3rd after the trimming. Also consider that samiam said he was in the lower-middle and Supercluster said he was in the middle-middle but both got called today. So I definitely think your info is either inaccurate or outdated.

Hmm no I've definitely been in touch with Mr. Rosso after the trimming and I was told I was in the middle then. Yuck I guess that just means more waiting and more phone calls to the admissions office for me. 🙁

But congrats supercluster! 🙂

If it helps, I have been told that I am at the upper part of the bottom third, middle part of the bottom third and bottom of the bottom third by Mr. Rosso himself since the shortening of the list in April. 😕 I was also told that since the shortening of the list, our positions are final and that they will not at all fluctuate. Now obviously if people in your tier withdraw from the list, you may move up in rank, but how does one move down in rank if they are no longer adding people to the list? Who knows what really goes on behind the scenes. Sorry if I sound bitter – I really am excited for those of you who have received an acceptance. Good luck to the rest of you still waiting. 👍

hey namist,

you should definitely call and get things straightened out. im sure that mr. rosso said that i was in the bottom of the middle third, and this was after they trimmed the list. so, im not sure what the deal is.

congrats supercluser! looks like we're gonna be classmates.

kaz, as much as i'd like to go to the housing weekend, i really can't make the trip this weekend. please let me know what info you get. i will eventually have to find a place to live.

My guess is that people on the bottom of the bottom third all dropped off the list. But who knows?

Thanks everyone, I am thrilled to be a newly minted member of the UB class. In the beginning of the process I never dreamed that I would actually get to choose between schools, and the fact that I had the chance today is quite a feeling.

does this mean I have to get a palm now??? 😉

btw, I am very sorry to hear about the confusion that some of you have had with the office...I only asked Mr. Rosso once about my place on the list so I was lucky enough to not receive contradictory information. Anyway, it looks like movement is still swift--I honestly expected to get in in July or later (or never) when I heard I was in the middle of the middle, so the movement has been a welcome surprise.

so ive been uber busy recently and am sorry to have missed this flurry of activity/excitement! congrats guys! so so so excited for this upcoming year -- and itll only be minted when naimist and gator hear too 🙂 naim - have you had the chance to call mr rosso and clear things up about where [*ahem*] your acceptance is?

Thanks for the support guys. 🙂

I did try calling today, but I must've gotten them at a bad time because no one picked up the phone. Hopefully they were busy calling other people with good news then. :luck:

So I guess I'll try again tomorrow then.

Congrats to those already accepted, but for those of us still on the WL, i have somewhat good news....i was looking at last years thread http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=113251&page=5&pp=30&highlight=buffalo and it seems as though our pace is about a week ahead of theirs...and if i recall correctly, last year they made it to the upper portion of the lower third..so lets keep our fingers crossed that the list keeps on moving!!

Hi,

I got was accepted last week and formally gave my acceptance form this week. Hang in there!

By the way, today and tomorrow are part of the Housing Weekend event, so they may have been very busy with the new incoming 2005 med students. Who knows if they'll be too busy to offer spots if people withdraw?! But to remain positive, you can always keep thinking that they'll make those calls next week if you don't get a call tomorrow.

hey,

does anyone know how long it takes for the financial aid award letter to arrive after the acceptance packet?

samiam said:

I got mine like a week and a half after acceptance.

So I just got back from the Housing Weekend Events.

First off, our class is going to be awesome. Everyone I met was really cool and really interesting - I think Admissions has done a great job 👍.

Second, Buffalo seems better than I thought it would be - it's no Philadelphia or even Pittsburgh, but it's not a bad city I think. The Elmwood Ave area is a very cool place to live - kind of artsy, very lively. That's where I'm going to try to get an apartment (I haven't signed anything yet), or somewhere within walking distance to there. That area's also where a lot of the hospitals are, so it'll be more convenient in the 3rd and 4th years. Otherwise a lot of people signed places in Amherst, which is just to the north of the school and is very suburban-y. One apartment complex, the Boulevard Towers, is pretty much filled. I think 6 or 7 apartments were snapped up by noon - it's definitely the most popular place for med students, very condo-like. Otherwise I think most people live in other apartments in Amherst or in apartments/houses near Elmwood.

So whenever you end up going to look for apartments, I recommend looking in the Elmwood Ave area.

I'm excited, this year is going to be great 😀.

Hey Kaz,

Thanks for the update about the Housing weekend and financial aid stuff. I will take your word that our class is a good bunch-though you haven't met me yet, so you might change your mind come August. haha.

On a related note, is there some sort of forum or list where people request roommates? It would be nice to live with another med student, but im not really sure where to start. I guess I could start here. Anyone looking for a roomy?

Yeah, Mr. Rosso should add you to the listserv soon, people post looking for roomates all the time.

hey! just wanted to check in and see how everyone was doing.... i made it to buffalo this weekend, though too late on thursday to make the drink-thing, and ended up sleeping in on friday [so 9am doesnt sound that early, but we got into the hotel late and getting up friday just didnt happen...] a bit sad that i missed it, but if theres one thing i always make time for its socializing 🙂 and it makes me feel better that the class gets your thumbs up, kaz!

elmwood looks like a really cool area - i really liked the city more than i thought i would. it was the first time ive really seen it, and it won me over. i ended up getting an apt. at the delaware apartments -- i was looking into the boulevard place online, but i think i want something thats a bit closer to elmwood/downtown. my apt. is within walking distance of elmwood, in a really pretty neighborhood, so im really psyched. i looked at a couple on elmwood [in the early 200s] that were kind of manky, so id highly reccomend avoiding AFT Properties - they were just gross. the building one of the apartments they showed me [on north st.] looked more like the house in fight club than anything else. good movie, but not where i want to live.... haha

anyway - more than ever i cannot wait for fall and to meet you all in person! i think we'll have to have a tour of everyones apartments... kind of our own version of 'around the world' - am i the only one who played that in college? i claim the margaritas 🙂 has there been any movement recently? it literally took me a day to find a place to live, so even if anyone finds later in the game, im sure youll be able to find a great home. keep us updated and good luck!! 🙂

Hey Ames 🙂.

I didn't check out Delaware Apartments but I think I talked to someone who did - she liked it but I thought she said there was a waiting list...must have been a different building she was talking about.

I signed a lease for an apartment in the Mayflower, which is on the corner of Summer and Linwood. It's further downtown so that means a longer drive to school, but there are 5 other students there so we can carpool or something.

I'm starting to get antsy, one month before I quit my job, move, travel a bit, and start school. Can't believe this is actually happening! 😱

Ok, so I gave in and called UB to get the scoop on the current WL position. They're actually in the bottom of the middle third. 😱 Wow, that's pretty far considering that it's not even July yet. I'm starting to wonder if I actually have a chance of getting pulled off from the bottom third after all. This uncertainty is driving me nuts! Good luck guys – If there are any of you still out there. 😉

Good luck Gatorade 🙂.

Have you set yourself a cut-off point as to when you're committing to your other school? Or are you doing one of those until the last minute dealies?

I pretty much change my mind every other day, but at this current moment, it's one of those last minute dealies. If you were to ask me yesterday I would have told you that I have already committed to my other school. My mind seems to change like the weather these days. I guess I'm just a little overwhelmed. Thanks for asking though. 👍

I know what you mean; I was like this a couple weeks ago. I decided to do both actually, to commit while being willing to move at the last minute. As contradictory as that sounds, I'm much happier now about my situation.

Not sure how to explain it, but committing to one school makes me really excited to start there and makes me stop thinking about being on a waitlist elsewhere. And the more stuff I do to commit to the one school the happier and more excited I feel. Of course if I do get off the waitlist it'll be hell redoing everything for another school but hey, I like this other school enough to do it if I have to.

Does that make any sense? It's like really wanting to buy a Ferrari but only being able to find a Lambourghini for sale. So I go ahead and buy the Lambourghini while waiting for the Ferrari to become available. After buying the Lambourghini and driving around in it, I discover that I really do love Lambourghinis. So if the Ferrari doesn't ever come through, I have a Lambourghini, which is pretty darn good, and I have nothing to complain about. If it does, I'll just buy the Ferrari and give the Lambourghini to my little sister. The only downside is that then I'd be like $1,000,000 in the hole .

i have to say, thats one of the best metaphores ive read in a long long time 🙂 do you know what your chances are at pitt? i didnt look into the mayflower but im kind of jealous that you have a little pod-o-classmates with you! ill have to visit 🙂

gator - theres still a month to go... pleanty of time! [at least thats what im telling myself] i think kaz's advice is fantastic though - at the end of the day youre into a great school that youll really enjoy, and if you get into buffalo too - you have another awesome option.

hey
I wasn't able to make it to the housing weekend because I only found out I was accepted on the 20th and just couldn't get the trip together in time. I am going up next week though (I am finishing work at the end of this week) to get a place. I'm just curious, it seems like you guys were able to sign a lease pretty much on the spot--did you have to go through a credit check and everything, or did you just have everything they needed with you? I feel like in the past I've always had to wait a little while before signing a lease.

Anyway, I'm glad to hear you had a good experience finding apartments. I'm still torn about where to live. I have a friend at the med school now who lives in Amherst and likes it, but it does seem like the Elmwood/Delaware district has a lot more going on. I think Amherst is a little closer, which is a plus, and it's kind of boring which may also be good for studying purposes (hmmm). Anyway, I will look around both places and decide. Can't believe the time's passing so quickly!

I think it depends on the landlord/management company. Though saying you're an incoming medical student seems to speed up the process at a lot of places 😀.

The PDA info sheet came in the mail today.

Wow I want a Palm LifeDrive. If only it didn't cost like $500.

Just Wondering. I dont know if I have a chance being on the lower third of the waitlist (upper portion).

hey hopefulMD...im in the same boat as you...lower third upper portion....when i called on monday they told me that they were still in the middle third lower portion, but they havent had any withdrawls over the weekend and monday...so ithink its moving a lot slower than before.....however they informed me that last year they would have gotten to our place in mid july...so there is still hope...hope that helps and gluck!

Actually...Good luck to all 😀

i got another update for you guys...i called mr. rosso today and he told me that they havent had any withdrawls in the past week...not the news we want to hear, however i got my fingers crossed it will pick up soon...maybe this weekend will bring some 'explosion' into the pace of the waitlist..lol....anyways have a great 4th everyone!

hey guys,

ive got a quick question about rent in buffalo. i haven't been able to go up to buffalo and look around, so i was wondering what average rent rates are for a two bedroom apartment? I remember in rochester i paid 300 w/o utilities with a roommate in a decent house. ive seen some really cheap properties advertised, like in the range of 200-250/ bedroom, but im wondering if these are real "hole in the wall" type places. What do you guys think?

sam

I think the rent should be pretty similar in the two cities. I never really looked for any two bedroom apartments in Rochester but the one bedrooms were generally about the same price for the same type of apartment.

The two bedrooms I saw in Buffalo ran from 550-1300, with the average nice ones running around 700-900 or so (some with, some without utilities). The places right on Elmwood seemed a little shady and were less expensive - the advice I got (and I agree with) is that you want something near Elmwood but not right on it. Avoid going too far to the west or the east. I'd say you should probably expect to pay about the same as you would in Rochester - around $350-400 including utilities.

My one bedroom is $580 including all utilities; in Rochester I'm paying $595 (water, gas, trash...and cable for some odd reason).

Hey guys,
Just wanted to let you know that Mr. Rosso is out of town until Wed. afternoon so we won't hear any more news until then. :luck:

hey guys, i got another update...i talked to mr. rosso today and he told me that there has not been any mvt over the holiday and that this drought was unusual...however it seemed as though they are expecting more mvt as it gets closer to the start of classes...lets keep our fingers crossed that it picks up again!

That's weird, I know of two people at the housing weekend who were pulled off waitlists elsewhere. I would think that there should be some movement due to that alone...or maybe they haven't officially withdrawn yet?

In any case there's at least 2 spots that should be opening up soon, good luck!

fingers crossing for more movement... it sounds like some other schools have been shifting a bit, so hopefully it'll trickle down to ub too!

ive been somewhat mia - trying to get everything together for next year. i remember moving to college and it taking me like 2 days to get everything and pack. we still have a month and i dont feel like i have enough time.

though as a side note, i finally bit the bullet and bought a computer and the palm. i ended up getting the lifedrive - i was planning on spending more on the laptop than i did [got a great coupon for dell from www.gotapex.com. check it out], so had some extra money left over. i got the lifedrive for $420 on ebuyer.com - they had some good deals so check that out if you havent purchased your electronics yet! [im such a closeted gadget-lover!] 🙂

Good luck to all of u guys. I just graduated HS and started volunteering at Children's Hospital of Buffalo and seeing all the med students in there motivates me more. UB is a great school and Buffalo is full of good people. I've lived here my whole life and I can tell you that for sure...

Peace.

Oooooooh I so want the LifeDrive. And every day that goes by my need to get the LifeDrive goes up. Even though I KNOW that I will never use all the fancy stuff I MUST HAVE ONE!!!!! I played with one in Circuit City and I am very, very surprised that I didn't buy one on the spot. I am very proud of my self-control . I usually can't do that.

I know what you mean about feeling there's not enough time. It just hit me tonight how close August 8 is. Or actually how close July 21st is, which is my last day of work, and when I'm going to start moving. I so do not feel ready for this! It seems like this year has absolutely flown by. I went home for the July 4 weekend and remembered vividly what I had done to celebrate last year (well, it was exactly the same thing I did this year). I remember talking with my HS friends and telling them about how I was going to do Americorps for the year. And this time around, telling how I'm going to medical school. That still sounds weird coming out of my mouth.

doooooo it.... answer the lifedrive call!! im hoping that spending the cash now will hopefully mean ill be all set come 3rd year. ill need someone to play with it with me! like a new puppy. 'did you see what i did with my lifedrive?' 'oh yeah! so cool! check out what i did with mine!' haha. cant help myself.

and its offically a month from today. this time last year, i was on vacation with family and received the ub secondary online - the first one i completed. what a difference a year makes 🙂

Ugh...I am using the HP iPaq Pocket PC and it rocks. Why can't they support That? 🙂 It does eveything - vid, music, excel, and it's Windows-based, so it's easy to use. Dang. THough I suppose there are more PDA tools out there for the Palm.

QUESTION:
I will be buying a car for my move to Buffalo. For those who live in Buffalo--do I need something larger than a car to get out of snow (or do they clean the roads really well)? Like an SUV? a mnin-SUV? Car-- 4wheel drive? I know nothing about cars!

And know of any good and nearby car dealers? Thanks!

There are programs for PPC that emulate Palm - maybe that would be good enough? Were you the guy who asked about PPCs on the listserv?

You don't need a special car for Buffalo. As long as you've got front-wheel drive you'll be fine - just get snow tires. And get off-street parking if you can so your car doesn't get buried.

I'm not from Buffalo but I've lived in Rochester for the past year, which is almost as bad. They clean roads really well in upstate/western NY, so basically you shouldn't have any problems once you liberate your car from the snow.

Yeah, Palm, i suppose are good in that they've been around longer and I know from experience there are more diagnostic tools on Palm than in Pocket PC. That should be reason enough to actually follow UB's recommendation. Nope, I wasn't the one who asked on the listserv (but i am on it, and looking for posts by people looking for roommates!).

Thanks for the tip on the car! So looks like I should get a house and split the bedrooms with roommates and keep the car in the garage. 🙂 I'm reading up now on how to care for a car! I'm at the basics-- the parts under the hood. Where's my "Lucky" magazine?!!

Kazema's right - you don't need anything special by way of a car. I'm from Syracuse, NY (the wonderful snow capital), and I drive a little Ford Escort that does fine in the winter. Front wheel drive and snow tires are all you need.

About the palms, I just went and got mine - the LifeDrive. I checked three stores, and it's the same price at all of them, so unless you find a great deal online, it's gonna be like $500 anywhere. But better to spend now then have to replace later, right?? (That's what I keep telling myself anyway... 😉 )

Yeah, the Lifedrive would be the equivalent of my HP iPaq (wi-fi, all the microsoft softwares, etc). So it should ROCK! Just like my Pocket PC (*sigh*). And 4 GIGsfor the palm, cool--I only hope that they had a connected remote control so that I can buy this and forget about getting an iRiver (like the iPOD).

Page 10? Inconceivable!!

I just got done registering for classes so I'm pretty much all done with everything except actually moving to Buffalo. I guess I also need to get my ID card and parking permit. Inconceivable!

I'm ready for my 2 week vacation, one more week of work and I'm done! Inconceivable!

Any waitlist news?

Hey everyone, just wanted to say hello, I've been away but I'm back home for some relaxing before school starts up. I made it to Buffalo and found an apartment that I'm really happy with, so that was the biggest challenge. I got a palm (I went for the cheaper one...it seems pretty nice, but I'm not really a gadget person) and I got my parking permit and ID card when I was up in Buffalo last week. Now I'm been playing around with myub and their VPN. I even have a buffalo email address already...it's weird that I can access all this stuff and I haven't actually matriculated yet. 😕

Just so you know, Kaz, getting the ID card and parking pass was totally painless for me (except for a random $20 charge for the card) but I'm guessing that the lines will get longer as the summer draws to a close. Let's see...for the ID card I needed my drivers license and the fee, and for the parking permit I needed to give them my license plate number and person number (I got my ID card first, I'm not sure if they can give you a parking pass without your ID card so you should do it in that order). Also, I had to clarify that I was a med student and not a freshman undergrad, which I think is pretty important because med students qualify for a pass that allows us to park in all of the lots on both campuses. I went to the offices on the North campus because I was unsure if the offices on the south campus were open during the summer.

Good thing you got there early... The north campus parking office gets terribly busy near the end of August (Imagine a line going out the door.) So make sure you get there early! Both offices are open all summer long 8:30am to 5pm M-F. And it's not that medical students get a special pass, they get the regular pass--you see, they've implemented a new policy where resident fresmen, that is first year undergrads who live on campus get a restricted pass, and can only park in the residential parking lots and the park and ride lots. You weren't there on Monday were you?

PS-Any other medical students going to get your parking pass, visit 104 Harriman on the south campus, there is never any customers there, so no wait! The south campus card office, on the other hand, is closed until like august 27th.

Good thing you got there early... The north campus parking office gets terribly busy near the end of August (Imagine a line going out the door.) So make sure you get there early! Both offices are open all summer long 8:30am to 5pm M-F. And it's not that medical students get a special pass, they get the regular pass--you see, they've implemented a new policy where resident fresmen, that is first year undergrads who live on campus get a restricted pass, and can only park in the residential parking lots and the park and ride lots. ah, thanks for the clarification, I was pretty sure that at least one of the south campus offices was closed. I was there last Thursday. There was no one there at either place so it was quite easy. I figured it was better to go to both offices on the north campus since I was already there, but I guess I got lucky 🙄
