SUNY UPSTATE: Acceptance, High Priority Alternative List, Holds

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I interviewed in early March and was placed on the HPA list on April 4th. Based on previous posts about rankings and interview dates, I must be pretty low on the list. Still, I would like to confirm it. Is it too early to email them and ask about where I stand?

Thanks

No, it's not too late. But they won't tell you where you stand. The most they will tell you is if they got to your position in the wait list last year, and possibly, the years before that.

Its not too late at all. I sent them an email and they told me that they got past my spot in previous years. The HPA does not go by the date you interviewed-if you look at posts on this site from previous years, there were people who interviewed in Feb or March and got off the HPA list before those who interviewed in October and were placed on the HPA list in Nov! So, just email them, and although they wont tell you what your ranking is, they will be able to tell you if they
1) Typically get to your spot, so hang tight!
2) You are in somewhat of a grey area but we have reached several positions beyond your ranking in previous years
3) You are in a grey area but in can go either way so we just dont know and have to wait until May.
4) We dont really know if we will be able to reach your spot this year because we have not done so within X amount of years.

They will also tell you to contact them either in early june, middle june, or end of june-this is because this is around the time where they've reach your position in the past. So if they tell you early June, you have a great chance of getting in. If the middle/end of June, you have good chance of getting in but it may be iffy because it depends on the number of people that drop.

Although Upstate doesnt tell us the ranking, I am really starting to believe that the ranking for HPA is very similar, if not identical to Buffalo's waitlist-upper 1/3, Middle 1/3, Lower 1/3.

My guess is that you want to get the first 3 responses because the 4th response seems as though you are so low on the HPA list that you are just above the Low priority list which they have not gotten to since 2001 becuase they have not gotten all the way down the HPA list in the last couple of years.
Hope this helps

Thank you SketchLazy and BlackPower2012 for your informative and reassuring answers. I will email Upstate and see what happens. Hopefully I will get one of the better responses.

There is a facebook group page for the SUNY Upstate Class of 2012. Thought I would pass it along.

Hey all, the wait list is moving. I contacted them to see if they can give me some estimate, and they told me that the HPA list is definetly moving, and that they have reached several positions beyond my spot last year, but I have to wait, because people who are holding multiple spots must drop before they can offer acceptances.I get the feeling that there is going to be a lot of movment this year but thats just my opinion. Hang in there guys!

They told me the same thing when I contacted them last week and I am not feeling any better since then. I am a nevous wreck at this point and I can barely sleep! I want to get in so badly!😕

Hey Blackpower and Brown, thanks for the reply. When you guys spoke with them, did they give you indication of whether the list was moving quickly or slowly relative to past years because I've heard in years past many people are accepted off of the list? Good luck everyone

Hey Brown, dont get yourslef all tied up in worries. You mentioned that you have not been sleeping all too well-well, you better get some sleep because Upstate pulls people off the HPA list up until the first day of orientation which is at the end of August. So you practically have 3 months in front of you, and I highly suggest that you get some sleep and stop worrying. There is absolutely nothing you can do, but to enjoy this time (which is your last taste of freedom until your 10 week break at the end of MS1)! Go and travel, or get a job to make some extra cash. No need to fret over a decision that you cannnot change. Just relax because that acceptance will be so much sweeter sometime in the future.
As for WHE, well, they said that it just begun moving and didnt indicate whether it was fast or slow. I honestly dont care how fast or slow is moving as long as they get to my spot as well as a couple of friends that may or may not be ranked around the same spot that I am in. I would think that its moving slower now becasue students are still holding on to thier spots. I think I read somewhere that Med schools are officially allowed to drop students after May 31, but I dont know if thats true or not. If it is true, then there will be some great movement.
Hope this helps

Question? Does anyone know if SU allows SUNY Upstate students to use their gym(s)? Or purchase a guest pass? As of now the closest gym I can find it still 10 minutes away driving and I'd rather find something w/i walking or 5 min if possible and the YMCA is NOT happening I was told it's unsafe for young females who plan on walking there and back.

Hi, everyone does anyone know how the HPA list is moving these days...I called the office but they told me to write an email to them since no one was in at that time.
In the email they said "in the past several years to students in your position on the waitlist. I encourage you to remain patient and optimistic!"
I was wondering did anyone else also get a similar reply and what are you thoughts on it.....

Has anyone got a position from the HPA list yet???

Hey djs, I dont know if we got similar emails because I dont know what they actually told you. In your qoute, I think that you may have left out a few key words...did they tell you that in the past several years that have gotten to students in your position or did they say they have not gotten to students in your position? Anyhoo, I am going to assume the positive and that they have gotten to students in your position. With that said, I think that is only a good thing. I also have been told that the HPA list has been moving slowly thus far. Its probably becuase people are still holding on to one or two school or so. Just sit tight I guess...did they tell you when they usually get to your position? They told me that they tend to get to my position sometime in July..so I have a few weeks in front of me.

That is so funny. They told me the same thing and I wonder whether this is just a standard answer. Anyway, the slower the list moves the more alarmed I become:scared:. I just hope that it is not the case from this point on.

I totally agree Brown...I hope that the list moves on faster....do you think calling Upstate and asking them "when do they generally reach my number on the HPA" will help???

Seriously, you guys have to relax. If you ask me, I truly believe that each email that they send to students are specific and NOT general. I think it becomes general when two people are in a similar area on the HPA list. For example, they may have told two people that "in the past several yaers, we have reached your position, so just relax and stay optimistic!"-This is probably because the two students may be ranked 125 and 134, respectively. In the past several years, they may have offered admissions to individuals up to # 170. However, someone who is ranked. lets say, 167 may get an email that tells them, "you are in what we refer to as the grey area, so we just dont know and it can go either way." They probably say this because in the past they may have only reached # 161 on the list and in other years, they may have offered spots to people ranked # 175. Someone may also get an email that states. "we have not gotten to your position on the list in X amount of years, adn we are not hopefule that we will do so this year" "-that student may have been ranked 192 or so. (Guys these are just numbers Im throwing out, they are not in any way contigent on anyone's ranking. For all I know there may only be 80 people on the list or as many as 200).

So you guys are in a great position-they told you that they have reached your position every year in the past several years....its only a matter of time. I dont think calling them will increase your position , adn it may even annoy them but you are more than welcomed to try if it makes you feel more at ease. You just may find out that you are the next person on the list, or you may find out that you will not be called until the end of the summer, if at all, and I am sure that would make you more depressed and anxious as you may be now! Just relax, we have a VERY long way in front of us. There are three months left before oreintation, and during my interview, someone told me that a classmate got pulled off the list as late as the last day of orientation, so we have a long way.

They told me that they have reached several postions past where I am currently ranked in many years except for two years ago. And they proceeded to tell me that if I am called, it will not be until July...I think what they were really trying to say is:

"Bro, stop emailing us, calling us, and more importantly STALKING US, because your position is still your postiion and bothering us will not make you feel any better. We reach you in July, so dont PESTER US until JULY!!!!!!!!!!!

If you want to call them, be my guest, but try not to read between the lines because it will worry you more and more. If you have multiple waitlist spots, you are bound to get accepted to one of them..right? so just chilax...(apparently, relax and chill forms a word)

To tell you the truth, I have no desire to call or email them. Although I think and want to do it every day😀. I am going to start on eating potatoe chips every time I feel the urge now. Anyway, I will keep on reading SDN so to stabilize my mood. Upstate call me alerady! I cannot wait anymore:meanie:!

Hey all,

I just got off HPA list a few days ago - so there is movement. However, they said there isn't much movement at all with the Syracuse campus, which was my preference. I was a bit skeptical about that - seeing as its relatively early. But I decided to take an acceptance with the Binghamton campus anyways.

Just wanted to give a heads up. Best wishes to you all!

Don't worry about which campus you accept at there's always some movement I hear, I myself have a spot on the Syracuse campus but have been seriously thinking I may want Bing, so that would be one possible exchange spot already. Congrats and good luck to all! Hope to see you in august :welcome:

I opened my email and here it is an email from Upstate, but not exactly what I am looking for. Apparently, they just want to remind us (HPA waitlisters) to that we have medical forms to fill out before orientation. :spam:

So they want to spam me but will not get me off the list. Anyone got this email? Quite frankly, I don't want them to get my hopes up for nothing when I am trying to reapply for next year 😡.

LOL. I got the same email. I was so excited when I read in the subject line "SUNY Upstate Medical University HPA List" and while I was reading the email, looking for the "please call the office", I get, THIS IS NOT AN ACCEPTANCE. All i could do was laugh and say " Upstate, You FOOLED ME!!lol. Just what I need when I am at work on a humid Monday morning.

Hang in there guys, It wont be too long before we hear something. I know that the HPA list is moving a little more because I know a couple of people were were offered a seat last week.

Sorry to break it to you Brown8472, but you just been PUNKED! So have I.lol

PS-Who knows, they may just be sending this email to those who they believe that they will reach on the List this year!

hey, i just want to let you guys know that i got accepted couple of days ago, so there is still movement. but i too got offered the binghamton campus, so i highly doubt therell be any movement for the syracuse campus at this point. ive been following this thread for a while now and my heart goes out for all of you guys so good luck and hope to see you in 2 months.

Yeah, blackpower has been very caring and all that. This thread is keeping me from going nuts over this waiting game. Anyway, Innedhelp85 did they give you an idea about your position on the HPA list? Did they call or email?😀

i received a phone call and as ive seen from other accepted students upstate calls when your accepted so i hope you guys get the same call soon. and during my waiting process as dsj pointed out this thread was one of the few things that kept me sane lol. i did not ask about this years movement in general but as others pointed out syracuse is done so at this point i believe the only acceptance would be for binghamton. good luck to all of you and hope to see you soon!

Congrats!!!!!! Its really good to hear that the list is moving. I am not sure about the whole "Syracuse is not moving" bit, only because it is so early. It amazes me how much time we really do have. Syracuse positions may open up later in the summer, but who cares..as long as we get the phone call, does it really matter where we are placed? Guys, this is all semantics...Binghampton is a great place for clinicals because of the faculty to student ratio.

I was told that of 160 students who matricaulate, about 25-35% of the class gets off the HPA list. So, if my math serves me correctly, thats between 40-56 people get in, but there must be twice the amount of acceptances becuase people will opt to attend other schools. So approximetly 80-112 offers, possibly more! That sounds like an awful lot, so we have to remain patient and stay positive.

BTW, those who are waiting to get off the list, do you have any other acceptances or waitlist?

PS-Congrats to all those who were accepted, if I opt to attend Upstate, I hope to see you guys in the Fall!!!

I'm on the hpa list as well..I'm also on three other waitlists. It's about as awesome as it sounds. Anyway, I had really high hopes for upstate but back in april I called them up and asked honestly what my chances were and the woman said I was in a "grey" area and that I shouldn't expect to hear anything until JULY. lol, I'm going to start working on my 2009 application this week..

Hey Tunahater20, you are bound to get in one of those schools that you are waitlisted at. Also, you are in a good position with Upstate-I know someone who was also placed on the HPA waitlist and he called recently and they told him that they will NOT get to him because he is very low on the list. If they told you that they wont get to you until July, I would think that they may get to your position sometime in July or at least no later than August. If they didnt think they would get to you, they would have told you that they dont know if they will get to you and that since you are in the grey area, it may go either way and they just cant tell you anything further. So, try to think of it that way...it makes you stay sane and still brings you hope!

If you want to begin your 2009 application, thats fine if it makes you feel comfortable, but maybe you may want to hold off forking over anymore money because you probably WILL be contacted by Upstate or one of those other schools that you are waitlisted at.

Hope this helps

There is no such thing as "Binghampton".

On Long Island, there is a wealthy area of Suffolk County called "The Hamptons". There you will find a Southampton, a Northampton, a Westhampton, an Easthampton, and even a Bridgehampton, but NO Binghampton!

The city of Binghamton is named after William Bingham, who bought the land after the Revolutionary War, thus it is "Bingham Town". No one would confuse Binghamton with a Hampton, trust me.

/Sorry, pet peeve

Hey, thanks a lot for the words of encouragement. I'm trying not to be too glass-half-empty about this whole thing but the waiting process is pure torture. Then, on top of it you don't want to apply too late if they don't get to you...it's a horrible balancing act.

Hey tunahater,

Being a firm believer in Murphy's law, if you fill out AMCAS for 2009, you'll get off the waitlist and worse case scenario, at least you'll be set for the next cycle. Hopefully it won't come to that.

Hey Tuna, I know the process is very un-appealing but it is what it is and we just have to deal with it. As for the whole AMCAS thing, it may be wise for you to begin filling it out and all-this way, you will be doing something productive and not playing the whole waiting game. I would suggest that maybe you may want to hold off submitting anything because last time I checked, there was a $150 fee for the first school and 30 bucks for each additional school. If you have the money to spend or a FAP (Fee assistance program waiver that allows you to apply to up to 12 schools), than maybe you can go for it. But in my opinion, it would really suck to spend $150+ and you get accepted say, July 31st! When I applied last yaer, I sent out my AMCAS in the middle of July and it wasnt verified until sometime in August, but I didnt send out my secondaries until October and received multiple interviews as early as November-so I think the whole "apply early" thing may be just a bit over-rated but then again, if I did apply earlier, I would have been accepted to my first choice! So its really up to you. Waywoe (really cool name if I do say so myself) is absolutely right, the worst case scenario is sending out the AMCAS but at least you may be a step ahead, if actually applying early to insure your acceptance holds true.
Hope this helps

I talked to them recently, they said I'm in the gray area. I don't feel like waiting anymore, and just wish I got an answer either way. Right now I'm heading to Downstate, but don't know if I would go to Upstate if accepted. Unfortunately, Downstate Orientation starts Aug 10th, earlier than Upstate, so I'm giving myself until mid july and then withdrawing from the waitlist.

Which means that I still have a chance to get my 1st acceptance this season. Alright, I am going to keep my hopes up until mid-july and see what happens while I am preparing to send another waive of interest letters (although I doubt they have any effect, but they make me feel good) and reapply again.

So guys, keep those updates coming because the energy on this thread is my only source of brain food!!!😀:meanie:.

Dont lose hope Brown. I am sure you are next in line to receive an acceptance just you wait! I contacted them today and they told me that the list is moving slow and that they cannot tell me anything other than they may or may not get to me. I think that is just a standard answer, but it is what it is. I will be preparing to move to D.C. while still holding out hope that I may hear something from Upstate by early-mid july because afterall, Upstate is my state school, which means a LOWER tuition rate!

Hey guys, just dropping my 2c; it seems the waitlists/HPA lists are moving extra slow this year at several schools. I feel like they are all holding eachother back since accepted applicants can't really take any action without the schools sending word. I'm also dying to hear from my top choice where the waitlist is moving 'very slowly' according to the admissions office. But there's high hope for the people on HPA lists according to past years. My friend is on the list at Upstate and he's confident as ever. Let's all be optimistic guys!!! :luck:
