SUNY Upstate High Priority Waitlist

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey everyone,

I thought I would leave an update. I called the school today since in the letter they said we could find out about our status after June 1st. I was hoping they would tell us where we stand as a applicant. They just had some general message for us. She said that the HP list is moving "kinda slow."( I tried to get more info, but she would not budge, like if they drew alot of people from the list and if they expect the list movement to pick up.

Got some more good news in the mail yesterday from Upstate!!!!!!!!!!! I recieved one of their medical alumni scholarships which pays tuition for all four years of medical school. This is more than a dream come true man. I dont even know what to do with myself.
Oh and to some of the question posted after my acceptance post. Yes the list is ranked. I dont know what they base the rankings on but I know that it is. As for my stats, they are pretty good, but I have also done years of great research as well as tons of community service
( won numerous awards) and I think all that taken together put me pretty high up there. Anyway I pray that I will be able to see all of you currently on the waitlist in Auguust when classes begin.

When e xactly does class start at Upstate?

Orientation starts on 8/21
Classes start on 8/26

I called Upstate today to check my status. They told me the same thing that they told Trowa, that the list is moving very slowly. They didn't sound very optimistic at all. It sounds like they may not be taking many people off of the list this year.

Same answer here from Upstate

How is it that the UB waitlist is moving along and the Upstate one isn't??! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="frown.gif" />

Withdrew from HPL 6/7/02, heading to GWU

I called them todAY, and the lady told me that the admissions office is letting everyone on the list know by calling and sending letters. She didn't tell me though where I stand over the telephone. But I hope to hear from them soon. Did anyone hear from them recently?

Oh man, they are calling and sending letters! I really hope that they are not sending letters to people on the bottom on the HPL to tell them they have no chance and should "consider other options." I don't mean to rant or anything, but they take everyone off the HPL list for the past three years and many people off the past 10 years, but this year, it sounds really bad according to the lady. Please tell me, this ain't so.

Hey Trowa,
did you call the office too? I do not know how to feel about those sent letters myself but it seems that it is too early for them to reject people on the HPL. Lets hope for better. As much as I do not want to re-apply, I would like to know whatever my fate is at this school before I submit my AMCAS app. When I posted, I didn't mean to stress anybody, just wanted to share some info with others anxiously waiting like me. Hang in there.

I actually called the office a couple of weeks ago. Yeah, your right, I should probably just relax. There is plenty of time left (well maybe not that much). I'm only on two other waitlists, but I really want to attend Upstate. Well I hope for the best and that we all get off the list!

I think there is a misunderstanding here. When I called today, the extremely nice woman who answered the phone said they were informing those who were being offered a spot via phone and letter. There was no mention of an additional letter to applicants on the list. My understanding is that they won't contact us at all unless we're accepted. If we never get offered a spot, I would think we wouldn't know until after classes start.

It would be something if the list didn't move as it did in previous years. My advisor - who has been in the business over 30 years - says that it anticipated that the list will to pick up speed in July because of the delays associated with the AMCAS problem. Nonetheless though, I'm making secondary plans just in case.

I hope what your advisor said is right..

guys,

i was on the second wait list last year and came pretty close (i think i was next in line) to getting accepted. i called and called and called all last summer. i was told i would be called and taken if someone left during orientation. needless to say, i didnt get in, but this year i was accepted within a week of my interview. upstate liked to find excuses to let second time applicants in. after the second time it becomes a bit like kicking a dead horse, but you guys get my drift right???

so reapply and get your stuff in asap. but dont give up hope cause that list picks up at the end of the summer. this year might be a little strange, because of the obvious amcas s%*t, so keep your fingers crossed and dont give up hope.

your best bet is to get your name in their head. unknown to me, my family doc called upstate on my behalf and i sent letters to my interviews, sent letters to admissions, and went to an informational session there over the summer. THEY KNOW MY FACE. now maybe that didnt get me in (i did take a research position while reapplying), but i think it helped.

drop me a line if you guys have questions or concerns. and good luck, i hope to see you all late in the summer.

I just talked to my friend who already made Upstate. He decided to withdraw because he received an offer from Buffalo, and decided to go there instead. That means that there is a spot open, and one of us on the HPL should be getting a phone call soon. Good luck!

Thank you for the info, Bigmanzd. This gives some hope to all of us, the HPL people.
Upstate is the last chance for me to get in medschool this year. Needless to say, how anxious I have been since I was placed on that list.

I don't know if any of you care but I recently withdrew from the High Priority Waitlist. Good luck you guys. It's still early, don't lose hope!!!

Ladies and Gents! Another one bites the dust.

I received a called yesterday from Upstate. I have been offered a spot for this year's class.
Needless to say, I said yes. For those of you still on the HPL, keep your hopes up. The list is moving.

Good luck.

Congrats on your acceptance, bigmanzd !
It is nice to know that somebody's waiting is over.

Congratz, bigman! I hope the list is going to pick up in the next few weeks.

For those of you who don't have any acceptances and are waiting for the Upstate's list to pick up, when are you planning to submit your AMCAS (if you are re-applying this year)? I am working om my AMCAS and will be finishing it tomorrow. But I am not sure when to submit it. How long would you wait to submit it, knowing that the fee is non-refundable and waiting will negatively influence your chances for the next cycle? Any thoughts are appreciated.

It's July 11th, and I am still waiting to get off this list. Depression and anxiety have certainly plagued me for months now. It's beginning to look like I'll be taking two years off of school. I need to take the MCAT again in April if I don't get accepted this year. Has anyone been accepted in the past week or so!? Thanks

:pissed:

I called them this Monday and the lady on the phone said that the list IS moving slowly.... I hope it picks up SOON!!!!

Peeps,
I've been on HPL since Jan 7th but did not want to post here before... superstitious?
Anyway, tired of waiting, I contacted my interviewer and he was nice to look up my position on the list (it is ranked). He said to go where I was holding acceptance at, because if they would ever offer me a spot, it would happen no earlier than in the middle of August...
He also added that more people are accepting them this year because of recession...
So, Drexel/MCPHU, here I come!

Hi, guys. The list is moving.
I have been offered a spot. They called on July 10 and left a message.
Good luck to everyone.

Congrats! Are you accepting it?

Thank you, guys.
Yes, I am accepting it.
I hope everyone will get accepted off this list. Hang in there.

Do you have any idea approximately where you are ranked on the HP list?

Congrats mvs on your acceptance! Glad to hear that the list is moving.

Anybody who is looking for an apt. at Syracuse and a roommate, please let me know. I just got a place that is a 10 min. walk from school. It's a 2 bedroom suite, great apt., see for yourself. I am looking for a roommate, so anyone interested please contact me.
Just to let you know, there is a waitlist for apts. at Madison Towers, and Jefferson is booked until August.

Good luck!

Hey folks,

I just received a call from the admission staff on Wednesday that I've been offered a spot at Upstate. The clinical training will be in Binghamton rather than Syracuse, though.

For the people who were accepted off the waitlist, were you offered spots with Binghamton as your clinical training site?

Either way, I think I will take up on the offer. :) :)

Congrats Daredevil!!!

When I was offered a spot, they had selected me to stay in Syracuse for the training sites. That was my first choice too, when I first made that decision last winter. It really doesn't matter where you will train. You are in medical school one way or the other.

THanks bigman!

Since I live in NYC, I will have to drive up one of these days to find apartments there. Is it possible to find something in one or two days? Where and how did you find your apartment? Did you go through the real estate agency?

Hi all!

I received a phone call today from Upstate saying that I was accepted from the High Priority Waiting List to the Binghamton program. Apparently the Binghamton list is moving much faster than the Syracuse list, but she wouldn't tell me where I was located on either list.

I am going to withdraw both my acceptance to the Binghamton campus and my name from the waiting list for the Syracuse campus tomorrow, so maybe that will work out well for one of you!

Good luck everyone!

Kris

Daredevil,

With regards to finding an apt. I called up the school, and they gave me a website to go to. It's www.orangehousing.com.
They have a list of apts. that you can choose from. That's how I found my apt.

By the way, I also live in NYC, and my apt. is a two bedroom suite. So if you would like to room with one person, contact me, and I'll give you all the info. about the apt. I got.

Good luck!

bumping for a friend of mine who is still on the H P waitlist.....

Finally accepted off the HPL after so many long months of waiting!! WOOHOO! Although, I'm deferring for a year to do research at NIH. Hopefully, someone who needs the acceptance will take my place this fall. By the way, I was accepted for clinical training in Syracuse.

Good luck to your friend, Knish!

Hey Everyone,
I just wanted to let those still on the list know that they are still accepting for this year. I was given a call today. It is really strange, I already withdrew to go to another school. Good-luck to those still waiting, Upstate is an awesome place!

Maybe this thread is worth reviving, since the title is more relevant to the current situation. Plus there was some good luck on this thread in the past, hopefully some will rub off on us.

Has anyone gotten any new information?

i have an interview in sept. for the early assurance program.
anyone know what to expect at the interview??

I have a sense that next week will be a good week for people on the waitlist. The previous years saw a good amount of waitlist activity the last week of July and first week of August. Hopefully this strange waitlist year will at least adhere to that trend.
