Super Stressed about GPA

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
High school does not count, on the application they ask for all your work/community service since the beginning of college. 3.2 overall is a bit lower than average but I wouldn't count yourself out completely. I believe the difference between post bac and delayed graduation is that post bac you have your degree and are taking classes to boost your gpa. I would recommend that compared to delaying graduation. I would say do well on the DAT and maybe that can make up for the lower than average gpa. And also get your shadowing hours up

Getting an interview invite is possible with a 3.2 overall-I have similar stats but have a 24 AA. My friend also received a UNLV invite and has a similar gpa as well and a 22AA-so take that as you will. I have had friends in previous cycles get in with similar stats as well. I don't think dental schools will all "count" high school shadowing hours-especially when you only have 20 recent ones (so definitely shadow a lot more). All in all, if you can maintain at least a 3.2, I would wait until you see what you get on the DAT before committing to a post-bacc.

Does it matter if I do my post-bac at my current college (UNR) or another college? I heard it was cheaper to delay graduation and just retake classes.

That's true. How did you study for the DAT? Did you do it for two months? I should take it this summer even if I don't apply this summer because the material is more fresh right?

Upward trend, killer DAT, anything is possible.
I only have a semester left before I apply. So I just really have to study for the DAT huh. I wonder what dental schools are plausible for me

No, I don't think that matters. I think that's what most people do, actually. Graduate and get the degree and take relevant classes to get your GPA up, if that is your choice path. Unless you've done terrible in your classes thus far (C or below) I wouldn't recommend retaking anything. I'm not sure about it being cheaper or anything like that. I would just say focus on the DAT and killll it

I studied for it in a questionable amount of time (would not recommend). 2 months is more than enough to potentially get similar results to me. Personally, I got the most score for my buck out of Bootcamp with Destroyer coming in at second. You should take it after your set study schedule and crush it after your set study schedule (none of that I'll take it when I'm ready*delays for 6 months* type of stuff).

After this semester I might be at an overall 3.2 GPA. I'm taking my DAT this summer. I've been doing a lot of community service. I haven't shadowed a dentist as much as I should. Probably 20 hours so far. In high school I shadowed dentists for over 200 hours but I don't know if high school would count. I'm so stressed out about applying. I want to go to University of Nevada-Las Vegas's dental school. I don't know if I should just wait an extra year and delay graduation/do a post bac to increase my GPA (not clear on the differences). Please help!
Are you an IS or OOS applicant? If IS, UNLV accepts a lot of people with lower GPA. Try to bring your GPA to at least a 3.3 and a minimum of 21 on DAT preferably 22. I would also start shadowing more since high school does not count. AADSAS clearly states that no activities from high school will be accepted.

Input your grades so you know where you stand GPA wise. Play around with the excel sheet to see how many credits you need to get your GPA to where you want it. Like everyone else said get the highest possible score you can on the DAT. Apply early (1st batch, but you can still take your DAT in August) and broad. Best of luck.

I'm IS! How many shadowing hours are ideal? So if I were to shadow next semester is four hours a week good?

I know exactly how you feel, I have a 3.2 sgpa and a 3.2 overall as well. My upward trend has been pretty bad ass though (3.8,3.85,4.0,4.0) and I got a 24 AA and a 25 TS. People have told me that I shouldn't worry and I would give the same advice to you...

On average, most people consider 100 to be the minimum

Ya, I wouldn't worry with stats like that. Super impressive

Try to get at least 100 hours. Since you are an IS applicant your chances of getting in is REALLY high. At this point do your best to get straight A's until you finish the Spring term. Also, having a high DAT score is your best bet to make yourself a competitive applicant. If you need some guidance with DAT, pm me

I think you'll be fine as long as your trend is upward.
I had a similar GPA but got into my school of choice (as an in-state). I didn't expect many interviews but after I got in during the first-rounds, I didn't much care. Don't lose hope. Stay in touch with the school--in a good way.
The admissions office at my school always told applicants that they prefer to you build up your GPA with an extra year or whatever, than to do a masters program. However, I don't know if this is a universal trend in other dental schools. I could see how GPA would matter more though--as everything is all about numbers now a days.

Your GPA is at a point where, with the right dat score, it shouldn't hold you back at all. Just bust your ass off studying and aim high.
