Supplemental Applications 2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yeah, I sure hope it's not midnight tonight - don't think I'm prepared for that...

Anyone know? I don't need a reason to panic!

Well...the website says Oct. 1st, but it ALSO says you should submit the supplemental AFTER submitting the VMCAS...so presumably the same time as VMCAS?

Hmm, how about this... if I'm telling a story in a supp. essay, is it acceptable to include part of a conversation? As in, with quotations: she said, "Something seems a little strange about this..."

Why not? As long as you don't identify the person by name.

Hard to know for sure without knowing the context, but I think it would look bad to quote someone and include their name. And if it's not their real name, but your readers don't know that, how do you explain that without it sounding awkward? I don't like the idea of using someone's initial in an essay either. Oh crap, I'm not being much help here, am I? It's just difficult without the context. Is there any way you can leave it in the 3rd person (is that what they call it?) where you say for example, The woman said, "Something seems a little strange..." so you can avoid the whole problem?

You've probably figured out what to do by now since it's late, and I'm presuming this might be for Ohio's supplemental which is due tomorrow. I hope you were able to decide on an answer that felt right to you. 👍

I second LivestockDock with leaving it somewhat ambiguous as to who said it. I used a quote in one of my supplementals and I said "asked my friend's brother"

just wanted to say that it is nice to know I am not the only one still working on Ohio's supplemental. Cheers to the other procrastinators! Just got home from work (yay parent conferences! excellent timing!), so time to get cracking! I am taking tomorrow off work to recover/celebrate though, so at least I can stay up until all hours of the night if needed!

Sorry TT, I have no advice for you! My struggle is whether or not my question about human and animal medicine is too random and personal... they said "be specific" but I am totally second guessing what I wrote! Oh well... need to develop a plan for my favorite non-biomedical challenge.

Just finished my last supplementals! Finalized my NC State essays and saved them on the application, and finished my Auburn and Iowa essays and have them ready to go to the post office first thing tomorrow morning. Whew! What a relief to get that off my shoulders! Now time to nervously wait...

UTK's bugs me....$37 bucks for information that can be pulled straight off of VMCAS. No essay, just your address and when/where you took prereqs. 😡

I'm starting to worry that I'm going to forget something vital with all these supplementals (ie fee...or the supplemental itself!) But I am very happy that I am not doing Ohio's supplemental!

I am currently working on Ohio's now. Just submitted Iowa's; I hope my what will I bring to ISU isn't too bold/out there. I really tried to sell myself and I hope it pays off.

But Ohio's makes me want to stick a rusty fork in my eye and be done. I also have to do Illinois' too which makes me want to stick two rusty forks in my eye and be done. I just want these to be done! 🙄

Maaaan do I *have* to have 500 words? I have much closer to 300 on a couple of these and I think I've said what I need to say. Do I try and make it longer anyway?

I have 121 for my first answer. I sure hope they don't count it against us if it's much shorter than 500 words. For all they know, I am trying to be considerate by giving them less to read!!

AHHHHH! Done! I'm done I'm done I'm done I'm done I'm done I'm done! And not a moment too soon! SIIIGHHHH.

As for the word count, my first essay was just over 100 words, the next 3 were pretty near 500, and the last one was almost 400. I didn't want to dwell on something that was a "challenge" for me since that's what ended the application-I didn't like the idea of going away with something terribly negative so I said what there was to say and left it. I think if you feel like you've gotten your point across that you shouldn't try to add the fluff, because it will be obvious that it's just fluff. I'm sure your essays are awesome!!

On Ohio's five non-biomedical challenges that veterinarians face did anyone else use all three of the ones they gave us for examples?

I changed one of them to something very similar, but in a word, yes. I looked them all up and pondered them and they all seemed to be very significant so I used them.

I didn't because I'm stubborn like that, but I don't think it's really a big deal. Especially if you choose one as what you want to talk about, because then you're expanding on it anyway.

The integrity question was the problem child before because I had no answer, and now it's annoying me again because my response ended up at 595 words! How the heck will I trim that?

I have really good answers to the integrity questions but how I am going to be able to keep it at 500 words or under is a mystery to me. Good luck on triming (this might be spelled with 2 m's but I am too lazy to think about it/look it up right now) it down to 500 words.

Western's instructions on the essay part say:
.Please limit answers to 200 words (1700 characters) or less. .

Um, 1700 characters, even when including spaces, is way more than 200 words. Does anyone know if a response can be over 200 words as long as it is under 1700 characters? I may not have a chance to call them tomorrow.
Thanks.

Hmmm... you're right. My essay responses from last year (some of which I'm keeping, and some I'm changing) were between 1100-1400 characters. And a couple of them were ~225 words. I never really over that though. I would say keep it around 200 words but don't stress out if you are slightly over. But definitely don't go over 1700

Ohio is done minus a final proofread. Um, now on to Iowa. Argh.

Any guesses what my "greatest challenge" was? Lol.

My guess: Procrastination

You and I did the two in opposite orders. I did Iowa's first and just finished Ohio's (I submitted it). Now on to my final one...Illinois.

Grr...have to finish tonight because I will be at work all day tomorrow.

Good Luck, TT!

At least I don't have Illinois to worry about.

It was time management! They were all like, "how do you plan to correct this?" I should have put, "sorry, ran out of time to answer this question."

Another point to make: as I get tired, my grammar goes downhill fast. All my effort is going into the supp. Don't judge.

 That would have been funny.

I am done! I have submitted Kansas, Mississippi, Ohio, Illinois and Iowa.

All that is left is....Western, but I have filled out their supplemental before so I will probably reuse some answers, maybe clean them up and expand a little.

Good Luck everyone!! Only 4 hours left for VMCAS!! :luck:

I'm already having "morning after" regrets. I fear that one of my answers made me sound really, really stupid and I wish I had it back to change the wording around.

Just breathe. And let it go. You did great. This time next year, you'll be in vet school. :xf:

Thanks 🙁 I'm trying. I just remember how they always warn you in the admissions presentations and stuff to not try to talk about things you don't understand-and I talked about what I DO understand about a couple of things but I'm afraid the way I worded it makes it sound like I DON'T understand it at and like I'm trying to say I know something I don't. I almost had a panic attack over it this morning, true story.

Ahhh. Well, try not to think about it anymore, EG. Remember, we're usually more critical of ourselves than anyone else is. You'll have an opportunity to talk about those issues anyway during your interview, which you are sure to get. Just keep telling yourself, "I'm starting vet school next Fall!"

Man, that's was a late night. Note to self: DON'T DO THAT AGAIN. Western will be done in advance lol.

Now I have to convince myself to het out of bed and go look at parasites after 4 hours of sleep...

I just spoke to Western. The text box on the pdf we have to put our answers on will only fit 1700 characters. It doesn't matter how many words it is as long as it fits in the text box.

I just thought we could use a thread to complain about the supps as we see fit. If nothing else, someone will be panicking about Cornell or Missouri in October. 🙂

I also have a question, just to make sure I don't miss anything huge here: Western has a supp, but no fee, and Davis has neither a supp or a fee... right?

We actually have a supplemental application and a $50 application fee. I am not sure about UC, Davis. We have a postmark deadline of October 15th. Your application does not need to be received by the Admissons Office by October 15th. It simply must be postmarked by the Post Office on or before.

Transcripts may be sent directly to us or sent to you to include with your supplemental application packet. The same applies to your GRE scores.

For those that have recommendations on improving the supplemental application to WesternU please send those my way. I am happy to bring them to the Admissions Committee for consideration for next year's application.

Good luck to everyone!

OMG! What a day! FINALLY got Ohio submitted at 11:25am EST. 😱 That was one of the hardest supplemental applications I have ever had to do and the fact that the east coast weather has been less than ideal did not help the situation. Although I must say that Mother Nature's wrath is amazing to watch. Oh lord, I'm rambling - sorry. Congrats to all who defeated that beast!

were we supposed to receive any confirmation email from Iowa saying that our supp app was submitted successfully or anything?

LMMS - I finished Ohio at like 4am and Iowa at 8am. I know how you feel!

Qwerty - I didn't get anything, it just changed to say 'submitted' on the login.

I'm impressed! Somewhere around midnight I cried "uncle," hit submit, and went to bed! I have to say that I feel OK about just about everything except my Ohip supplemental... if I don't get an interview, I'm going to blame my supplemental (and not one of the dozens of other things that it could be)!

Shall we start stressing over Missouri now, or take a week off from applications first? I'm voting taking a week off!

Last year I was in Honolulu for a conference the week that Cornell's supplemental was due, and being the penultimate procrastinator, I actually had an east coast friend of mine call me at 10 am eastern time (so 4 am Honolulu time) so I could wake up and make the last revisions to my supplemental before turning it in by the time I had to leave for the conference at 9 am.

Ahh memories...don't miss it.

Oh No! You've told them about our secret club?? Just kidding. We all know that the adcoms stop by once in a while.

Oh, I almost forgot, I wanted to tell you guys! I barely briefly mentioned SDN on my Ohio supplemental. LOL. Hopefully they don't think I'm crazy.

LOL I think that's really funny, because I was considering changing my username because my name on here is the same name I used for the VMCAS. I was like...I don't want them searching my username and then finding all my crazy SDN posts!! (That there tells you the level of my paranoia.)

Washington's supplemental askes whether you want to pre-fill your application information from last year's (if you applied last year). Does anyone know whether you get a chance to edit/update those answers, or if they are just automatically submitted if you select that option?
Also, I haven't allowed myself to go on SDN until after October 1st because it's too much of a distraction, but I was just reading through this thread and I TOTALLY AGREE about the evils of the Ohio and Illinois essays. I'm taking this weekend to catch up on sleep and schoolwork, then I'll be diving into Western, LSU, and Washington essays, and I'm sure I'll be venting about those plenty.

Washington doesn't have essays....that I know of? otherwise I totally screwed myself when I hit submit!

no, don't panic! I haven't actually seen the format of Washington's supplemental because I'm not sure what to select for getting it started (whether to start fresh or pre-fill from last year's), so I'm sure you didn't miss anything on it. I meant to say that I have the supplemental apps left for Washington, LSU, and Western. sorry!

*phew!* I was pretty sure that I was right, lol - but thanks for clarifying...😱

Uh... I might be the only idiot doing this app tonight... but does anyone know if it's due at midnight tonight? so like 12:00am 10/25. Or do we have until 11:59pm tomorrow? I can't find it on their website...

I have an itty bitty question I was hoping to get some opinions on.

I have 2 slots left for additional extra curricular activities/volunteer/community service stuff. I was wondering if including my involvement with a clinical vaccine trial was an appropriate thing to include for voluntary community service. I've been involved with the trial for about 5 or 6 years and it involved multiple doses of the vaccine and getting blood taken on a regular basis to check my titers. The doctor and office staff knows me well enough to be able to confirm this for the admins.

Any thoughts?
