Hey guys --

So I'm waiting to hear back from a schools in a few week's (ish) time, and I was wondering in your experience (or if any adcom can comment) on the effectiveness of having someone I work with (currently working in n healthcare industry related job) to write to me an LOR. The person I would ask wouldn't be my direct boss, but someone on a similar level and who works closely with me and can speak to my character and skills, etc. I'm wondering 1. if this would be helpful, in your experience, to potentially push me over the edge into an acceptance if I submit it within these couple weeks and 2. when exactly would be the best time would be to send -- in these two weeks or after hearing back and being placed on waitlist.

I am also currently volunteering and was wondering the same thing -- if a letter from my volunteer manager would help at this point or at a latter point i.e. after being placed on waitlist. Thanks!!

Obviously not an adcom, but from what I've seen on SDN, the general consensus seems to be that sending additional LORs usually isn't fruitful. My understanding is that even a glowing recommendation at this point, probably won't be enough to pull you off the waitlist. The materials schools already have at this point is what will be used to make a decision.

The usefulness of LOIs is also debatable but maybe that would be of more benefit than an LOR? Interested in hearing other people's thoughts on that.

Why didn't you get one from your manager?

Cause I haven't told my manager yet haha. The individual I would be getting rec from works in same group as me, is my superior, and someone who I trusted with the information that I was applying to med school. So at this point that individual is the only person I feel comfortable asking. For others, I'm waiting to give like maybe 2 months notice, so summertime perhaps?

Yep I sent a LOI in already, but I want to maximize my chances of an acceptance and not landing on the waitlist in the first place. But you're probably right, they probably already have a decision about me seeing as though I interviewed in the October timeframe...

Ah, sorry, I misread your original post and thought you were already on a waitlist! In any case, if you've already sent an LOI, I wouldn't send anything else. It's unlikely to make a difference and you do run some risk of schools being bothered by receiving repeat letters. At this point, they know your application and they know how badly you want to attend. As unpleasant as it is, I would just be patient and wait for a decision.
