Does your preferred specialty match up??? Please share what it says you should do and if it's anywhere close to what you want!

hahah it ranked me as high on all the surgical fields and low on family practice and peds. i guess it's right. nice test, kinda long though.

I got Peds. I'd say that it was right on target! Wow.

Cardiology is my main interest. Never thought about nuclear medicine. I matched for a bunch of hard specialties. Interesting.

i just took it, and it told me i should be a dermatologist. umm, that's not likely to happen, so oh well. pm&r was #2, which is on my high list. pediatrics was #3, which i have zero interest in because i really don't dig kids. in fact, the only truly primary care field that appeals to me in im because you don't treat kids. radiology is #4, which also makes no sense because my one really consistent response is that i like working with people and human interaction -- you don't really do that as a radiologist, do you? the other ones in my top 15 that i'm actually considering are rheumatology, neurology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, ob/gyn and psych. overall, psych is what's most appealing to me now, but it's only 12 on my list, so what do i know. :)

actually, i really don't know anything as a lowly premed and am willing to concede that.

anyway, here's my list. as you can tell, procedural and technology stuff is not my thing.

I'm not a big fan of this test since the questions are goofy and there isn't a question that I really answered 1 on therefore the spectrum is pretty small.

My main interests are in Nephrology, Psychiatry, Preventative Med, and Radiology. But there's no epidemiology on the test. Boooo! The interesting thing to me is that I have no interest in Emergency Med, Family Practice, Pediatrics and General Internal Med.
I think all this test does is prove that my ability to answer questions that gauge my personality is consistent with what I say. But still, thanks for posting it.

Pathology...hmmm...never thought about that but who knows. I am interested in surgery, I see it was pretty high on the list.

Mine refuses to load. I think I broke it

Why is it some of the questions were repeated oodles of times? I wonder if it keeps track of how consistent you are. "I like decision making" - strongly agree. 3 minutes later, strongly disagree. 3 minutes later, neutral.

I think thats how they try to make it accurate.

I think why my scores even for my lowest are because I basically used 3,4,5. That has to be some human flaw of not wanting to rate something a 1.

1. Emergency Medicine (42)
2. Pathology (42)

Well, Brett, I hope you didn't keep giving yourself high scores for being decisive if you refused to rate something a 1.

I'm not sure how accurate that test is, guess I'll have to wait and see what I end up doing. I don't want to do surgery though, so I'm not sure why that came up so frequently.

Emergency medicine, anesthesiology, psychiatry, hematology, med oncology, endocrinology, infectious disease, pediatrics and allergy/immuno are all interests of mine. I'm keeping my options open, okay ? :)

I was super impressed by this test. Granted, my top score was kind of interesting, I never really thought about ophthalmology before! But the next three were pretty much the only ones I have actually considered at this point! Emergency medicine, ENT, and anesthesiology!
Pretty cool.

Interesting. So I wonder why my top two were Psychiatry and Psychiatry. Thought that it was pecular, though I do want to go into Psychiatry (forensic), but to have the top two both be Psychiatry? I think that it may be trying to tell me something. Either that or I'm hallucinating.

I don't think this test was particularly helpful; like Brett, my spread is pretty small. What the heck is "aerospace med?" And how does one go about specializing in it?

I got aerospace med as my numero uno. My theory is, I was deemed capable of taking care of the world's healthiest people.

I'm pleased to see that there are a great variety of results, rather than a typical list of high ranked specialties owing to some twisted commonality we have as chronic SDN'ers.

Here are my results. I hope UW is not patrolling this thread.

Recently I've definitely been considering primary care a lot more. (probably owing to all the research I've been doing for my interviews primary care schools) If I were to pick a surgical specialty though, my top choice would have been opthalmology--so it's good to know that this test is pretty accurate. I think urology and ophthalmology are at my top because I need have quick and positive results. Those two have great procedural outcomes!!! And I hear that being female gives you a step up in matching urology residencies!

2 ophthalmology 45
3 otolaryngology 43

It's interesting to try to figure out what you answered that made a certain specialty rank highly. I think all these tests wind up telling me that I should be an oncologist because I don't need positive/definite outcomes, I like to be hands on, and I'm very good at listening/communicating. Which is all well and good, but the test can't possibly know about my own family history with cancer and oncologists and why I'm not really interested in pursuing that field.

The data used for the test came from the book How to Chose a Medical Specialty by Anita Taylor. I just so happen to have a copy of this book (I know, thinking ahead). One section of the book has 4 page summaries of each specialty, the type of work invovled, average hours, compensation, etc. It also has survey reults, excerpts taken from people's responses to questions like "Why cardiology? What do you like the best, what do you like the least?" etc. There is also a section that lists the 10 things the respondents ranked highest. If you score each characteristic 1-5 and then total the score, then the specialty with the highest score is the one you are most interested in. The online test just computerizes the process (and repeats questions apparently). Since the cardiology page is open in my book here is an example . . .

Cardiologists tend to:

"Enjoy complex problem solving"
"Have manual dexterity"
"Be energetic"
"Value independence highly"
"Be willing to work long hours"
"Be uncomfortable with poorly defined problems"
"Be interested in people"
"Like gadgets"
"Become bored with repetitve activity"
"Be serious and determined rather than easy going"

Each specialty has a different set of characteristics listed, but this gives you an idea of the type of survey responses that were collected and then used to make the program from the website.
