Since the cardiology page is open in my book here is an example . . .

Cardiologists tend to:

"Enjoy complex problem solving"
"Have manual dexterity"
"Be energetic"
"Value independence highly"
"Be willing to work long hours"
"Be uncomfortable with poorly defined problems"
"Be interested in people"
"Like gadgets"
"Become bored with repetitve activity"
"Be serious and determined rather than easy going"

Damn, cardiology IS for me. :)

My list was weird... it listed everthing, then i think continued listing in reverse, SO.... nephrology was rated my #1 and #32 i think choice.
Emergency med my #16 and my #40 .... so not exactly backwards.. just... weird... I'm not all that interested in kidneys. Oh, well.

I guess i'll just have to defy the test and continue my interest in sleep and pain.

so i got occupational med as my number 1.....what is this? i looked it up, and it said aerospace med is a specialty of it...yet aero ranked in the bottom half of my list...WEIRD

but i really need to look into this stuff b/c all of it is interesting to me I CAN'T CHOOSE can i just specialize in everything? except colon and rectal surgery, i'm ok not going into that....that sentence is kinda funny and gross....sry, i don't have a backspace button

I bolded everything I've considered... happily enough, emergency med is my #1 and it tied for first. I'm not even really sure what an endocrinologist does... I'll look it up. Plastic surgery is probably at the bottom of my list of specialties, which is neat since it scored that here, too.

Here are some other websites:

-- The American Board of Medical Specialties has a description of how to pick a field: http://www.abms.org/which.asp

-- The AAMC has a smaller page dedicated to the same topic: http://www.aamc.org/students/cim/start.htm. Your school may also have given you a Careers in Medicine password.

-- Finally, SUNY at Buffalo has a quiz to match your personality with a particular specialty: http://www.smbs.buffalo.edu/RESIDENT/CareerCounseling/interior.htm?self-assessment.htm. Also, the University of Virginia has its own quiz: http://www.med-ed.virginia.edu/specialties/. These two websites give different results; so you should interpret the results as you wish. Just for laughs, there's also this quiz on Geocities: http://www.geocities.com/iqhometest/doctorb.html.

Perhaps we are all missing something- that the real use of these should be to make us look at options we have not yet considered. So many of us are going with the "mainstream" specialties, where as many of us ranked highly with things that are not even on our radar. Just a thought.....any comments?

Your maverick ideas are getting on my nerves. Seriously, that's a great point. I had some things high on my list that I had never heard of
5 occupational med
6 aerospace med
7 rheumatology (the google defn: the study of rheumatic diseases... thanks.)
On the other hand, my interest in Nephrology is wholly personal: my brother's had 3 kidney transplants and the first one (the only one that failed) was from my father. My brother was never given a chance to be an underwear model with all those scars on his belly. I know I should look into other things, but Nephrology has seduced me like a Siren's song.

let's start our very own future occupational doctors club! only ppl w/ occ. med as #1 allowed! First on our agenda...finding out what occupational medicine is...

Occupational medicine is the branch of clinical medicine most active in the field of occupational health. In the United States it is one of the three medical specialties (also including Aerospace Medcine and Public Health & General Preventive Medicine) encompassed by the ABMS recognized specialty of Preventive Medicine. Its principal role is the provision of health advice to organisations and individuals to ensure that the highest standards of health and safety at work can be achieved and maintained. Occupational physicians must have a wide knowledge of clinical medicine and be competent in a number of important areas.

Occupational health should aim at: the promotion and maintenance of the highest degree of physical, mental and social well being of workers in all occupations; the prevention among workers of departures from health caused by their working conditions; the protection of workers in their employment from risks resulting from factors adverse to health; placing and maintenance of a worker in an occupational environment adapted to his physiological and psychological equipment and, to summarise, the adaption of work to man and of each man to his job.

idk if this is what i'm actually looking for in the future....and i think it will be hilarious if this is what i end up doing!

Interesting... Too bad I could see myself doing just about anything at this point. Never done that test before. Did anyone else get annoyed that they kept asking the same questions in different ways? Maybe I was just annoyed because I found myself answering some of the same questions differently... :)

I read this def too. Didn't it sound like Occ Medicine was a little to close to the Marxist capitalism nightmare: it would be our job to maintain healthy workers with a strong sense of false consciousness so as to keep them happy in their alienated labor? Now that's something I could get excited about--HA!

A close friend of mine has a father in occupational medicine. He did a few years of primary care before moving into occ. med. He has spent the last 10 yrs or so working for oil companies traveling all over the world examining clinics the oil companies set up at their far flung refineries as well as helping to direct health care policy in general for these companies. That's the type of thing (this particular) physician does in occupational medicine.

Ok. I took it about a year ago, and now I took it again. Last time pulmonology ranked highly, too. Interesting - don't know enough about it really. But I am interested in med onc, hematology, and EM. So far I have no interest in surgery, ortho, derm, OB, or peds (and actually I have a distinct disinterest in those fields right now). I think pulmonology and hematology ended up high on the list 'cuz I like gadgets.

I dont like this way of determining your "specialty of best fit." Anyone with some idea of what they want to do will conciously or subconciously rate the questions accordingly in hopes to manipulate the program and recieve a high score for their desired specialty. True results could be obtained only if the person knows nothing about the job description of any of the medical specialties or doesn't have any idea what they want to do. On the up side, it is a neat program.

Let's see, absolutely no to psych. I mean the least tangeable type of medicine and that's number one? I guess nuke would be ok but it really doesn't float my boat. I could see myself as an internist or neurologist but come on, I'm a computer guy. I'm good at math and problem solving so why do things like research not even rank and pathology come out so low? For those that care the specialties I was thinking of were internal, pediactrics, orthepedic surgery, cardiology, med research or maybe neurology.

Occupational medicine involves the care of people in the workplace. (Think factories of all kinds.) There are issues of injury and illness prevention as well as care of workers when an injury or illness occurs and then determining that workers are fit to return to work after an injury or illness. You see (or try to prevent) back injuries, carpal tunnel, poisoning by toxic chemicals, crush injuries, and the more mundane like influenza.
Rheumatology (someone asked) covers the rheumatologic diseases. Those include arthritis, lupus and sarcoidoisis -- basically the diseases of joints and connective tissue with a heavy dose of autoimmune diseases.
