I am currently taking my 1st semester of BIO & Gen Chem (I) at the local community college, i already have my Bachelor (non science) from Southern Illinois University and now i am living in san diego california and wanted to go back to school for a second bachelors in biology so i can complete the pre-regs for den-sch but the state school are not accepting applicants pursing second BA/BS due to lack of funding etc. (That is what the admission office at SDSU, UCSD and San Marco University in califonia told me) So i decided to take the pre-regs at the community college; which is offering summer class and i am plann on taking GEN CHEM II during the summer semester. I know that most dental sch require 2 semester of gen chem or one year. My question is does the short summer semester look bad to the dental school.. here are my top dental school i will be applying to next year. USC, UNC, SIU, LSU, NYU, Howard.

my background: I have been working as a dental assistant for the last 8 years and been an instructor at an Expanded/Extended Function school for the last 3 yrs. i am hoping my background helps my package next year..

#1 what do you guys think about taking pre-regs during summer semester?

#2 is my background going to help compensate for pre-regs?

short summer class or regular semester courses are the same.... Its all about the number of credits. A typical Fall or Spring term lasts 14 weeks, and GC is usually 3-4 credits, you basically meet 3-4 hrs every week for 14 weeks. Over the summer, its 6 weeks long, also 3-4 credits, but you meet like 8-10 hrs a week (so its the same class, just accelerated)

for Q #1) The material is the same, but the class goes 2x as fast as a normal semester. So It'll require you to keep up almost every day, chances are you'll have a test every 2 weeks.

for Q #2) No background can compensate for poor grades. The most important criteria for you is grades, if you got the grades, your background just makes you glow even better.

yeah it is a 5 credit course and it is 6 wks MTWTH.. and what i forget to mention about my background is that i am in military, due to those obligations, duty, deployment si have been limited to attended a 4 yr school, since the dont offer class in the evening. which is why i am taking my pre-regs at the cc because they offer night classes.

Sometimes summer classes are harder because they're so condensed. Get straight A's and you should have no prob...

BTW, PM me if you wanna talk more. I had to go back to take my pre-reqs after a non-science degree and took a bunch of summer courses. It sucked, but I got in and in two months I'll be a DDS -- so it's possible. GL!
