Hey all. I just registered for my fall 2010 courses. I'm taking organic chem 1, anatomy & physiology 2, and shakespeare comedies. My friend told me not to take those two science courses at the same time because they will be too much at once. What do you think? What other courses have you guys taken with orgo in the same semester?
I also work 3 days of the week. But I have no social life, so I'll have time to put in the effort for those 2 classes, since my literature class won't be too hard, I'm guessing.
Would like to hear your thoughts, thanks much ! 🙂

What's so hard about that? Three classes in a semester should be cake regardless.

My course load for fall 2010 will be medical microbio w/ lab, orgo 1 w/ lab, calc 2, statistics, and intro to healthcare delivery.

As pharm B said not a bad semester. If you understand your chemistry, it shouldn't be that bad...I thought O chem 1 was pretty laid back and I hated gen chem because I really didn't understand much (had a lame teacher). I haven't taken A&P 2 yet but it shouldn't be that much different from A&P 1. You'll do great.

I can't imagine you'll have any difficulty with those three classes. Two science classes during one semester really shouldn't give you a problem. Just make sure to keep up with your studying and you should be fine.

Most phamacy schools will probaby have a more rigorous schedule so it could be a good way to see if pharmacy school is where you want to go.

You should be fine ... it's really up to each individual person on how much they can handle though. Your schedule looks manageable.

Unless you take several years to finish prepharm or are taking summer classes, everyone has to take multiple science courses in a single semester. This is considering that you need general chemistry 1 and 2, organic chemistry 1 and 2, biology 1 and 2, microbiology, physics, and anatomy and physiology 1 and 2. You may also attend a lame school like mine where you have to take a biology and chemistry class as a prereq before general 1.

thanks everyone ! i feel a lot better. i figured my schedule wasn't too bad. whew !

I'd definitely recommend Organic Chemistry as a Second Language and Organic Chemistry for Dummies. I referenced the first book quite a bit during O-Chem I.

thanks for the tip ! i'll def pick that up..

i know what you mean. i've been taking bio and chem together this and last semester. i just didn't want to take on a heavy courseload when i take orgo since i have heard it was hard and i wanted to devote enough time into this course, so i balanced the hard and time-consuming sciences with an easy lit class.

Don't purchase either of the supplemental books recommended to you. Get them from your local library. 😉

Also, Orgo is really dependent upon two things. The type of person you are, and the amount you study for the class. While the latter is fairly obvious, the former is not. I'm an incredibly visual person, and Orgo is almost all visual, so I took to it very well. However, gen chem, not so much. If you're visual like me (and can visualize things in your head/draw them out) you may have an advantage over others. Also, just make sure to hit the ground running with orgo (start studying immediately) and you'll do fine. My biggest piece of advice is read the chapter you're going to cover in lecture the night before. I think this advice is more important for orgo than most -if not every- other class.

During one semester of undergrad, I took organic, microbiology, and biochemistry all at the same time. You have to work hard, it can be done! so good luck..oh, and I was working 3 days too 🙂

That's nothing 😛

yea thats really nothing, I took orgo, grad micro, A & P 2, and labs for all of them along with 8 other credits so i totaled 20 credits that semester.

Almost all the second year pre-pharm students at my school have to take those courses at the same time.. along with physics and all that fun stuff. You'll be fine =)

I took O'Chem I, A&P II and some other science class last semester and it worked out wonderfully, even while working 40 hours in the corporate world. Don't fret or listen to your friend. You can do it.

You should be ok. Last quarter I took Micro, Ochem I and Gen Chem I (retake because the first time was 10 years ago) with all 3 labs. Ended up with all A's except for a B in Micro. So If I can handle 3 science classes with all 3 labs, you can handle 2 science classes. Besides, Ochem is pretty easy, especially if you're a visual learner.

I'm taking Micro + Lab, Physics 2, Plant Bio, Theology and Computer Science

how do you guys feel about taking organic 1 in the summer over a 6 week period. the class is 4 days a week for 2 hours with lab twice a week for ~ 5 hours!! thats an assload of info in six weeks. is the attempt worth it?

sounds like a normal summer science class to me.... actually at my school they're 5 days a week though and lab falls on everyday so it's spread out... but still very similar.

if it's the only class you're taking you should be fine though

Easy peasy. Lab twice a week for 5 hours is less than the UC's regular session schedule.
