The DO that I have been shadowing does not use OMM in his practice. So I have not had any real life experience with OMM to be completely honest. I have a firm grasp of the osteopathic philosophy, but I'm wondering how much other people have talked about OMM in their secondaries. Will it hurt me if I don't really address OMM in those "Why DO?" questions?

Thanks.

i didn't. Not every DO uses OMM, so you definitley don't have to talk about it. I didn't even mention it in my secondaries.

But it is important you understand osteopathic principles... which is basically just proper healthcare, lol.

I hear you and yes many DOs do not practice OMM for whatever the reason maybe. But I'm a bit apprehensive because every osteopathic medical school teaches OMM. So I wonder if it hurts your chances if you don't talk about OMM in the app process.

Did you have any interviews so far and if so did they bring up OMM?

Well, I haven't had any interviews yet, but I have 5 interview invites scheduled for the next couple months. I haven't read of anyone getting asked a specific OMM question. OMM is a technique that osteopathic medicine is known for because it aligns with its philosophy of the holistic concept. Just be knowledgeable of it, understand its purpose in osteopathic medicine, and you'll be golden! 🙂

In my interview they asked me if any of the DO's that I shadowed performed OMT and if they had what did they do. I answered that I had but not alot. The otolaryngologist and facial plastics doctor I shadowed used OMT to relieve sinus pressure, and the Family medicine doctor used OMT to relieve lower back pain for a pregnant woman. Just be able to explain osteopathic principles including OMM and how it is not always used but can be another tool that DO's have to treat patients.

You dont need to really dwell on OMM..but make sure you throw in something about "another tool in the toolbox." You need to ensure that you stroke their egos and at least fake that you will use OMM out in practice (you probably wont).
