I honestly don't even understand the point of AOA or what it means other than the fact you scored higher than your classmates. I mean, the guy who led the clinical trial to figure out the cure to my type of cancer wasn't AOA. Neither are either of the two surgeons who are the world authorities on surgical management of this type of cancer. I mean actual objective measures of clinical competence >>>>> AOA. I literally know almost nothing about AOA so I could be completely wrong, but it seems like a self serving way for the high performers in med school to differentiate themselves from their colleagues. It's almost like an indirect "I'm better than you" club when you haven't even accomplished anything meaningful yet (and no, step and shelf scores didn't cure anyones disease - that does not count as a contribution towards medicine lol). In what way does the existence of AOA serve the greater good? Can't they just say they graduated "honors" and leave it at that? I don't get why your med school performance is used for inclusion into a lifelong club lol
