I have a pretty good handle on most of the Bio basics, but I always miss the taxonomy questions on my practice exams. I was wondering just how many of these bad boys will I see on the real DAT and how I should prepare for them.

i can't tell you exactly how many will be on the exam, but i can tell you how to prepare for them...

use as many study sources as possible.... kaplan, campbells, schaums, cliffs, and maybe even exam krackers (for mcat).... i don't know from experience, but this is how i'm going about studying for those type of questions

I memorized all of the possible taxonomy for the DAT and got one question on the test. It was SO easy, something about what organisms belong in this Kingdom. With that said, the bio section of my DAT seemed totally random and did not really follow anything that Kaplan or Topscore had layed out.

EmanUT-- With it being said that the bio section is completely random, is it stuff that you felt prepared for or that you had seen before? Or was it totally "hard" random...i.e. most of Achiever bio. I am a bio major but that section seems to scare me the most just because of the magnitude of info to know...are basics enough or are specifics required? Of what areas? Is Kaplan Blue Book info sufficient to get 18+?

i doubt the kaplan blue book is going to be sufficient for bio. the bio section in the kaplan blue book cant make up for the entire year of Bio 1 and 2 that you've had to have taken. plus advanced bio classes that you've taken will help as well. study as much bio as you possibly can from different sources and thats about all you can do.

Dang that sucks, I am leaning REAL heavy on Kaplan for my Bio. Thanks for the heads up though, I will have to dig into my Schaums now 🙁

Yea, I relied heavily on the Kaplan book. What a mistake! I am also a biology major and have taken a number of upper division biology courses. For the most part, I felt as if the bio was just random. If you read the Kaplan book, you will do well on the Kaplan exams. The actual DAT has a MUCH broader scope of questions than Kaplan (I had around 6 important bio chapters that didn't show up on my test). I was averaging around a 25 on the Kaplan and Topscore bio sections and did not hit close to that high on the real DAT. With that said, I still got above 90% on the exam so it is sufficient to get a pretty good score. In order to get these 24s like some people on this forum, you need a little bit of luck. Good luck!
