Disclaimer: Sorry I know these threads are kinda annoying! I searched for a specific TCOM vs PCOM thread and couldn't find one.

I matched at TCOM through the TMDSAS but got a scholarship from PCOM that brings tuition to a similar level. Family's in Houston so that's a big draw for staying in Texas, but I'm also kinda enamored by Philly and have cousins that live there.

From what I hear PCOM's been around much longer, and I'm not necessarily looking to stay in Texas for residency, and has a much more developed OPTI. But would a bigger OPTI be thaaaat important after the merger?

TCOM has more/better research, which is something I'm def interested in. It's also converting to pass/fail for my class. However, they only give 4 weeks to study for USMLE/COMLEX prep, which kinda concerns me. Is that really enough time?

Both have really great rotations and clinical sites.

What would yall recommend?

PCOM has a great hold on GME spots in philly. That is a nice safety net to have. However if the research you are interested in is stronger at TCOM I would def go there to make those connections within that dept should you decide to pursue whatever specialty falls within that research field.

I go to PCOM.

Is the scholarship for all four years?

It is.

TCOM has own hospital, cheap in-state tuition and living, and your family is there. Only downside is it's Texas.

That hospital shut down years ago actually, but the affiliations with DFW hospitals (JPS, Cook Childrens, Dallas Methodist, etc.) are really strong. Clinical rotations prob won't be a factor in this decision since they're strong at both places!

that it's in Texas is a strong point - especially cheaper cost of living than I'm sure Philly would be. Ask the admission/financial people if you can convert to in-state tuition after your first year. Fort Worth is a great city to live in.

The UNT health science center closed down?

Last day of school is May 6th, one has to take COMLEX before June 17th - > 6 weeks of board time if you want it, less if you don't.

I'm just about to graduate from TCOM. It's a solid school south plenty of opportunity. More than half of our class will be doing residency outside of Texas. So if you're not sure if you want to stay in Texas, you've or time to figure that out and opportunities outside of the state. If you want to stay in Texas, the programs tend to think highly of TCOM. Also the board study time was definitely adequate. We were so sick of studying by then that most of us were glad to be done.

The rotations at TCOM are great. The sites listed above are solid. It did have its own hospital (Texas osteopathic) that shut down 10-15 years ago or something. UNT Health Science Center is not a hospital but has plenty of affiliated clinics throughout Fort Worth.

I know barely anything about PCOM, but I've heard it's a good school. I'm sure Fort Worth is cheaper. Other that that, all I can really say is that you could do a lot worse than TCOM. Definitely a solid school with lots of opportunities.

Tough decision! Both schools are great. Where would you rather live?
