Temple: Why the bad crime rep.?

I can't understand why there are so many people who say that Temple is way dangerous and that may be a reason they wouldn't go there. I Thought I would share this info with everyone, if your one of those people it may change your mind about where you want to attend dental school.

There is a web site homesurfer.com that gives out info that comes from the "FBI Uniform Crime Rate database for 2004" basically this site gives different cities a score based that cities crime rate compared to the national average. The scores are 0-5, with 5 being the safest.

So this is what Philadelphia scored: 0.4

I know...your like holy Sh!#...why is this guy trying to say Philly isn't dangerous...Well when compared to other cities that have dental schools you'll get my point. Heres a few:

Minneapolis, MN: 0.3
Seattle, WA: 0.6
Boston, MA: 0.3 (all you harvard yuppies are gonna get beat down, watch
your back)
Detroit, MI: 0.2
Milwaukee, WI: 0.5
Richmond, VA: 0.2
Pittsburgh, PA: 0.4
Oklahoma City, OK: 0.4
Baltimore, MD: 0.3
Buffalo, NY: 0.2

You get my point...so why does everyone talk about how ghetto Philly is?
According to the FBI...If your planning on going to VCU or Detroit Mercy you better bring a kevlar vest with you...good luck...

My friend who go to Temple undergrad got her car window smashed and another one got the hood stolen. But over all they said that they were never aware of any physical harm. but it is a poor area so goods being stolen isn't exactly surprising just be aware of your surrounding, don't walk around with your ipod blasting on full or your wallet hanging out of your pants.

This is my point...its always a story about Temple being dangerous...never one about how ghetto Boston is...whats up with that?

I always wish there is a dental school in Hawaii. I have been to Texas, LA, Boston and Korea and now I am here in Hawaii. I love this place ;) The only problem in Hawaii is the price level.
 
Well, downtown Philly is very posh with tons of money so that might help those stats. It is northern Philly, where Temple is, that is pretty much a warzone at night. There are good people that live up there just trying to make a life for themselves but you are only fooling yourself if you think North Philly isn't dangerous. Still, Temple is pretty high on my list right now out of the schools I have interviewed at. There is a need there, that is for sure.

Those stats aren't too meaningful because they blanket an entire city. Boston may have rough areas but not many people are gettin beat down in cambridge.
 
north temple isn't as bad as kensington area :)

I live in Kensington. The area is straight up gangsta, but not if you know to keep your noses clean and stick to your own stoop.
 
what do you use to clean your nose?
 
I use those nifty new bottles of sanitizer. Squirt some out, rub it on and forget about it.

There was a private dental school in Hawaii slated to open up on the main island this year (incoming class of 2007). However, there were internal politics and the dean (a DDS, but also Nevada's Gaming Commissioner) was having trouble. I know that nursing students at another school he is in the administration for were suing for misrepresentation reasons.

The Hawaii school made it so far as to be mentioned on the ADA's website, however it suddenly disappeared sometime last year, with no explanation.

My friend lives in Center City which is a beautiful area of Philadelphia. Its like the lower Manhattan of Philadelphia but smaller scaled. NYC is a very safe city but you would never go walking the streets of Harlem by yourself or at night. This can be said about North Philly. Temple's Campus in north philly is really nice, but the area around it is not. There is a reason why Temple's campus police is one of the largest police departments in the United States. But that being said there is almost 40,000 students that live in that area and they do just fine. You can also live in center city if you go Temple. They have free shuttles from center city to main campus just for temple students. They run every hour or such. I know all this because one of best friend's use to go to Medical School.

I saw the school at buffalo...I can't possibly see how it would have a score of 0.2. That place is like leave-it-to-beaver town
 
I hear it's really bad. The endodontists steal from the periodontists. The GP's give the thugs gold teeth, the orthodontists are forced to give cows braces, and the oral surgeons ...well, they don't exist there. You should avoid going to Temple.
 
I saw two petite extremely good looking girls while I was interviewing at Temple. They are both dental students and if they can stay safe in Philly then I know I will be just fine.

Ummmmmm

Okay so two famous cities that you have all no doubt heard of.

Compton, California

and

Palm Springs, California

I personally cannot think of two more different cities. Palm springs = golf courses and old people. Compton = Bloods, Cryps, and scary gangsta sh*& :eek:

According to the website

Compton got a 0.8
Palm Springs got a 0.4

I'd personally rather walk around alone at night in Palm Springs
 
i can't believe compton got a .8. some of my friends from there would disagree. people randomly try to rob houses. my friend's dad actually shot someone with a shottie. they hear gun shots almost every night, at least according to their story.
 
I think those stats are misleading because in a big city one block can be a straight up war zone and a few blocks down can be a very nice posh neighborhood.

I go to school in chicago and if I walk one block north at night its not a big deal, theres a starbucks and a chipotle, if I go one block south at night...thats another story.

exactly, but the ratings are given as a composite of the posh and ghetto...so it all evens out, if one place has more "war zones" then there rating goes down...so why does temple get the bad rep?
 
i dont know if i trust that one. columbus, oh is listed right after philly. columbus is not dangerous.

I think Temple is in North Philly, and I believe North Philly is notorius for more crime.
 
In North Philly over half of the population (200,000+) live under the poverty line. So crime tends to be a little high. But, Temple's campus is like a little oasis in the midst of all the crime and poverty. You will be more than safe at Temple.

The town that the north campus of Buffalo is in (Amherst, NY) just won SECOND SAFEST TOWN IN THE COUNTRY again. (It's been declared that several times.)

There are parts of Buffalo that are really bad indeed. But it's a mixed city...there will be gorgeous mansions right next to boarded-up houses. There are some really great areas and tons and tons of culture....and it's SO cheap to live there. ($250/month apartments are very common.)

Second safest sounds fine to me.....
 
personally, i'd be more worried about going to Case on the eastside of cleveland, than philly

I have a friend who goes to Temple. He told me a story once about how he was in lab a little late, and as he was walking to his car these guys came out of the shadows and mugged him at gunpoint. Needless to say his mom got scared and said 'You're movin' with your auntie and uncle in Bel Air'

I whistled for a cab and when it came near
The license plate said fresh and it had dice in the mirror
If anything I can say this cab is rare
But I thought 'Now forget it' - 'Yo homes to Bel Air'

I pulled up to the house about 7 or 8
And I yelled to the cabbie 'Yo homes smell ya later'
I looked at my kingdom

To sit on my throne as the Prince of Bel Air
 
Temple area isn't so bad. You just have to carry your AK-47 and a couple of grenades just in case some thugs try to mug you. If they point their guns at you, show them your grenades and they will back off.

But seriously, Temple area is not bad. You just have to be street smart. Don't stay in the area very late. You could get an escort from cops if you are too scared to go outside.

I don't know if I could get Andrei to come out here right now. He is hurt and all, but he got to be there for his team. Hmmm. Quite the idea though. I am not quite sure and lanky 7 footer russian will scare off some of the thugs down by the school.
