Did anyone else get a phone call a day or two after their interview with UT-H? I did. I thought it was quite classy. I loved their facilities, staff and community.

No phone call for me yet... Maybe they don't like me.

Edit: Woohoo, thousanth post for Texas Interviews 2007.

The same woman that called me (a MSII) emailed me my answer the next day since she didn't know when I asked her. It's this kind of personal touch/community I liked there so much.

I don't think it is necessary. Your list might change depending on which schools you recieved offers from prior to the match and other variables...

But looking the diagram linked, the safest bet is to do it by Dec. 31st or Jan. 15th depending on your situation.

http://www.utsystem.edu/TMDSAS/Acceptance-MatchInfo.htm#Match

Sorry for the double post, but I only applied to UT-H in Texas (applied to other schools through AMCAS) because I have family there. By that link, I could know theoretically if I am accepted by October 15th at the earliest.. but I have nothing to do with the "match" right? Then again, I could not know UNTIL the match in February? Perhaps I'm a bit confused on the purpose of the match. Anyone up to explain?

October 1: Early Decision Programs at Texas Tech Health Sciences Center and University of North Texas/Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine.
October 15:
Non-Texas resident offers begin
Special Programs (MD/PhD, DO/PhD and MD/MBA) offers begin
Assured acceptance programs offers begin
November 15 - December 31: Pre-match offer period for Texas residents
February 15: Match results announced
After February 15 acceptances are offered as openings occur

If you are applying from OOS you need not worry about the match...in fact in state may not have to worry as much about the match either this year with the rolling admissions begining Nov 15

UTMB October 6th! 😀

Congrats to everyone who's already going on interviews. I really need to brush up on some talking points.

Actually, the rolling admissions period begins EARLIER for OOS applicants (Oct. 15.) Also, since he is only applying to one school, there is no match, although I wonder if, just to be difficult, TMDSAS will make you go onto the website and rank it #1.

Mr. Montana is correct.

I ranked it. Thanks 🙂

Hey, does anybody know if you know if the interview is open or closed file before you go in? At UTMB?? I'm assuming it makes a bit of a difference when answering questions.

Open.

someone help. I'm going to be driving from the Bush Airport to Galveston. Is there a lot of traffic on a Friday morning?

It's not 100% open. They have your application MINUS your MCAT score and GPA.

Is it just me, or has it been a slow week for invites?

I noticed that too. Not many (if at all) have posted new interview invites.

Come on TX, give us some love!

I want to hear from UT Houston and UTMB...where is the love guys

I want to hear from somebody. No invites thus far. I don't know if they're waiting for October or what, but I really want an invite.

Yup, I'm still waiting to hear from UT-H and UTSW. It seems like when I whine a lot (to SDN, and to my friends,) and begin to lose hope, an interview invite follows soon after. After tomorrow, prepare for some more whining coming from my direction.

EDIT: I'm talking SERIOUS whining, not just like this post. I'm going to need to turn it up a notch to land an interview at UT-H.

I am turning down my UTSW interview today so maybe the luck will pass on to one of you guys :luck:

😱 Can I have it? Please Please Please.

In all seriousness, would you mind me asking why (if you would like to share)?

I'm not a research person - I'm very much a clinical person. I've heard they more go for the research type. Not to mention that I am by nature NOT a competitive person (unless you count being competitive with yourself in which case I'm intensely cut-throat :meanie: ) I think San Antonio/Houston will be more my speed anyway. Plus, if you saw my credit card bill after buying all these plane tickets you would understand 😱

That sounds like a good decision. Plus, you have an amazing MCAT score so you can afford to do whatever you like. 😍

And I understand about the credit card. I'm afraid to even take a look at my following statement. Or wait until my parents do.

Tell me about it. I've spent >$3000 on this whole process, and counting.

I wish I had your confidence! But I'm treating every interview as my only interview until/unless somebody accepts me. After that, I'll apply a power trimmer to my list.

Of course, I have an additional uncertainty about my TX residency status.

i'm in the same boat too. i actually wake up in the middle of the night after dreaming about getting an invite.

hey chaeymaey,
Last year UTSA sent by snail only, but if you didn't respond by a certain time, they'd email you to see if you're going to respond.

i'm in the same boat too. i actually wake up in the middle of the night after dreaming about getting an invite.

Don't feel too discouaged... I think most people who have gotten interviews so far had their TMDSAS processed in June. I bet they'll get to you.

Thanks, Potato. To those with invites: did any of you take the August 06 MCAT?

Don't worry if you haven't gotten an invite yet. I was processed 7-5 and I just got two invites last week. So if you got it in later than that, I bet they haven't gotten through the stack yet.

Anastasis, I have a new respect for you. It can't be easy declining an invite from mighty Southwestern, but you did because of your convictions. I also think S.W. is more interested in research than turning out clinicians; for someone to have such a great MCAT score and turn down S.W. proves you are a person with high convictions.

 I don't know about MORALS... there's certainly nothing morally wrong with SW. It's just not for me. And I'm not going to spend 4 years of my life at a place where I'm not happy. I don't want to be a researcher or a world known surgeon. I want to be a FANTASTIC doctor and diagnostician who loves my patients and has done everything possible to make sure I've given them the best possible care. If I'm not happy, it's going to affect my work and I think my skills will be the worse for wear. But maybe I'm just delusional.

What happened with your residency status!?! 😱

What happened with your residency status!?! 😱

Well, I haven't actually lived in TX in 11 years... while I was on active duty my residency status was clearly TX, but I separated 6 months ago. Most full-time students are dependents on their parents' tax returns, and therefore clearly have derivative residency status, but I haven't been a dependent for years.

I claim that full-time-student status in MA doesn't make me a MA resident, but there's no official policy stating that. Baylor has one process and the UT schools have another, so I have two chances to be deemed sufficiently Texan. Still have voter registration & drivers license there, bank accounts, tax returns, etc...

I'm damned sure not from Massachusetts!

You're a Texan. I dub you one :meanie:

And if they give you any lip just smack upside the head with your MCAT score 😀

I just got mail from WUSTL today saying they were putting my application aside while they waited for my Aug 2006 MCAT score to come in.

I know they have high standards for MCAT scores there, but damn...

That's one hell of a complicated explanation! You go girl. 👍

It's nice to be a non-trad, no! 👍 to knowing what you want and kicking what doesn't fit you to the curb, although that likely means one less spot at Houston for me to compete for......maybe I'll have a little luck and get one of the other 229 spots.

BTW, Great sig!! I'm so GLAD College Football season is here

hmmm.....so if you get multiple offers between Nov15 and Jan1, will each of the schools know who else is bidding for you? The reason I ask is because Filo (at A&M) metioned that the "recruiting" during that time can go as far as offering scholarships. I just wonder why a school would offer out a scholarship unless there was a risk someone else could nab them.

yea that's what everyone is telling me. "calm down!" but it's definitely 10x harder because i'm on TMDSAS, and i see all those people who submitted in june/july and have a handful of invites to the only schools i'd ever want to go to (why? because TX is the best damn state in the USA haha). but yea, i know my TMDSAS was processed 8/24 and all my secondaries are in, so it's just a matter of waiting.

off topic, but i am glad i'm in the postbac program at UNTHSC. i know once i get to med school, i will be well ahead of the pack because what i've studied and experienced here. i just need to get in!

Yea I remember Filo saying that, but I think they would offer scholarships to students they REALLY REALLY REALLY want. They probably assume other schools REALLY REALLY REALLY want them too.

I'm sure someone has already mentioned this...but is it odd to get an interview before a school has received your letters of rec??? I was completely shocked today when I got an invite from ut-h!😱 Totally didn't see that coming saying that they don't have any of my letters yet, lol. I processed on 8/23 so *hopefully* I'll see another invite or two come in....come on utmb and sa!!!!

All the UT schools give invites pre-LORs. Tech and A&M wait for the complete application.

uhhh... ooookay!

seriously folks, UTSW is a big research institution, no doubt about it. It's a big reason why I'm here. But I've never felt pressured to do research at all since the start of med school. It's a medical school that benefits greatly from its ties to a highly regarded graduate school program (and its research celebrities) so of course it's going to seem like research is big here. I think I know more students who (including myself possibly) who plan on practicing primarily as clinicians rather than scientists.

Anastasis, you could always interview at UTSW (if you have the time/money), and if interview day turns you off, you can always withdraw your application from their consideration. good luck~

Kudos to you for being able to turn down an easy interview without an acceptance in hand given the complete randomness of the med school admissions process, seriously. =) I just hope that you have first hand experience as to why you turned down the school as opposed to just reading what others have been saying about the school (btw good job everyone scaring people away from utsw so that it opens up a spot for you. 😉 ) i kid i kid!

I dont want to be a researcher or a world renown surgeon. And I believe that I will be a fantastic doctor.

I never thought I'd be here at utsw. I even remember driving past Parkland one day with my mom and she asked me, "why don't you go to school here?" My response was, "oh gosh no. it's so competitive and i dont want to be in a place like that." But I interviewed here, nevertheless, and was pleasantly surprised. 1 year and 4 wks into med school, even if I had to do it over again, I'd still have ranked this place #1.

I dont know why I care. I guess I just want good people here who will make fantastic doctors. Give us a chance. =)

Oh well, g'luck!

Eh - no offense but I don't really expect ya'll to understand through the internet. As for the process being random: do you guys really think I'll get into UTSW but NOT San Antonio or Houston which I would rank higher? I'm not saying I'm a definite into any of the schools (in fact I'm scared ****less) but I do think I stand a much better chance at those two schools anyway.

Just to reiterate: I have nothing against UTSW. I just know students there and I know Parkland (which is an awesome hospital I will admit) and it's just NOT for me.

Edit: And I didn't mean to imply that SW doesn't churn out wonderful doctors. Just saying you don't need to go to a ranked school to be a wonderful doctor.
