Just got back from UTSA. I am very surprised to say that I actually really liked the place. I don't really want to live in San Antonio but other than that, I liked everything about it. It almost felt like college with the all the other allied-health schools around there. The people were incredibly friendly and the day was very well organized.

Summary: Loved it.
Yeah, I'm also curious, why don't you want to live there? I've lived there almost all of my life and I've survived thus far. But that's okay if you don't want to live here...one more spot for me! :meanie:

I'm curious too, I think SA is one of the better texas med school cities. Now if only they built one in Austin...

Actually, I don't know. I suppose I wouldn't mind living there. It's not too bad. It's just that if I'm going to stay in Texas I'd rather just stay in Houston. Or Austin if they had a school there.

Did anyone get an interview invite from Texas Tech today? They ask you to choose from a list of interview dates, but there's only one date on the list! 9/8 in El Paso, which is when I'm interviewing at Baylor. I know this can't possibly mean that they're almost done interviewing for the season...Anyone else having this problem? When are you interviewing?

I was invited on sunday and the menu had 9/6 and 8/30 in lubbock and 9/8 in El Paso, and it said available dates were first come first serve. Anyway, it's pretty unorganized and they gave really late notice.

dallas is better 😀

also in response to the tech interview, i'd just call them up and ask them for a different interview date. i can't imagine they're booked up for the rest of the interview season already.

Wow... when I was invited there was ~30 dates available, all the way out to December (maybe since I am coming from out of state).

BTW when were your app sent to schools?

Got an invite from UTMB for 9/22 today.

I also got an invite from UTMB today for 9/22.

On Sunday, I got an invite from Texas Tech for 8/30 or 9/8. I was shocked that 8/30 was available, because it was just over two days in advance. I really wanted to see the medical school campus in Lubbock, but I'll just have to go visit it another time.

for everyone who interviewed at UTSW last Saturday (26th)....how did it go?
I haven't heard any feedback from your group yet.

I liked it a lot. One of my interviewers was really friendly and we just talked about whatever for a while. My other interviewer was also pretty easy going, but a bit more reserved, we talked about healthcare issues for the most part, and he told me about a lot of the opportunities at the school. After eating lunch with the student body, I'm not too concerned with the school's competetive reputation.

Yeah, but you have to take into concern the fact that most of the super competitive types won't be coming to these types of events. I know I'm generalizing, but they're probably at home studying. As for competition, even if the students aren't competitive, the bell curve makes it competitive. You're in competition with your peers no matter what because that's just how the system is. Those who are in denial are likely the ones to get screwed over.

I'll be in El Paso 9/8.

I had a question. Did you all call schools such as UTH, UTMB and UTSA to check whether your file was complete or did you "assume" that once the TMDSAS transmits your file to them, they automatically have them. I am worried because I have been processed since Aug 2, but have not received anything from any schools yet😡

Don't worry. I've been freaking out myself about that. My TMDSAS application was processed on 7/5 and my LORs in on 7/17. I didn't hear anything from any of those schools until yesterday when UTSA invited me to interview in 20 days! (Can you tell I'm excited???😀 ) I think the people that I know that have already interviewed at those places are those with 3.9 and 36. They'll come around, and don't forget that they don't finish interviewing until December or later. Even though there's rolling admissions this year, my advisor doesn't think that they'll hand out many acceptances before the match. Maybe around 30 acceptances for a class of ~250 (don't forget also that they hand out probably 600 acceptances for a class of 250).

I actually think most of the competitive types do go to the interview lunches. You're on campus...on a saturday...why else but to study? I dont think that the free food is a compelling enough reason in this case. =)

Thank you so much. Good to know I am not the only one in this situation. Did you call the schools to find out if you were complete or you assumed so?

You can probably base being complete on the TX Tech status page.

Both interviews were super easy and laid back, probably the easiest I've had. There were no ethical or hard questions, just conversational stuff.

Are you serious, Karen said that?? When I was at UTSA I was talking with them and they said they were unsure about how many of accept on November 15th. But they were talking in a range of 200-300 for a class of 230. I don't know, that is what I heard from the horses mouth.

I think UTMB is trying to fill up their class completely by pre-match offers. I think AggieJohn said that but I'm not sure.

This is what my interviewer at UTMB said also and he was a chair on the admissions committee.

I asked what percentage of the class UTMB was looking to fill with pre-match offers, and the answer I got was "In an ideal world we'd like to fill the entire class through rolling admissions, but none of the schools are really sure how this new system will work out." While that could be interpreted as UTMB will hand out 238 (their entire class size, to my recollection) pre-match offers, there is enough wiggle room in that statement to still leave things uncertain. Plus, even if those 238 people hold onto their UTMB offer going into the match, there's no telling whether people will rank other schools higher. We'll see how it goes.

Honestly, I don't see how this whole rolling admissions process benefits schools at all. It's common knowledge that UTSW pushed hard for it because they wanted to better compete with Baylor (which has TRUE rolling admissions) in recruiting top students, but I don't see top students committing until they have resolved ALL of their applications (both in-state and OOS.) It is nice for us, of course, since we can potentially gain an acceptance earlier and help to ease our minds about being accepted to med. school. We'll see how it goes.

Hey Jota,
It's interesting that you say that rolling admissions will be easier on us, because I was thinking just the opposite. Obviously, it will be easier
if you get an offer on Nov. 15th or there abouts, but what if you have to wait until match. Can you imagine the angst in checking your e-mail everyday for 2.5 months, and since we won't know how many early offers were given we won't know exactly how bad it is not to get an early offer.

I think this whole process is turning me into a paranoid, sky-is-falling pre-med.

I think it will end up being easier for the most competetive applicants, but much worse for the more borderline applicants, that might be acceptable, but the schools aren't in a rush to snap up.

Yeah, that's what I was told when I went to the interview workshop last week. She was saying that it's for the period between Nov 15 and match I assume. I think they are all unsure of how many they are going to hand out, but the OPSA office thinks it will only be acceptances for around 10 to 20% of the class. This is the first year for rolling admissions so I don't think anyone really knows what they are doing at this point.

I agree somemaybedoc.

Yeah, I definitely see your point with that one. The way that I was looking at it was at least it is POSSIBLE to get an acceptance before Feb. 1 (old match date.) But yeah, I can see how it will cause more stress for those who don't (I will probably end up being a part of the latter category anyway....)

Anyone going to be at the A&M interview tomorrow?

I really hope I hear from Tech someday...otherwise tomorrow will be my last interview. That's very disappointing since the interview days are so much fun. Who would have guessed?

I got an interview with A&M on 9/14!! WHOOP! Finally, some love from the undergrad institution! Anyone else going to be there?

I'll be there as well! My app was processed 7/19 and I interviewed with TCOM yesterday. I just want to tell everyone who may not have the best of stats that interview invites will come, they may just take a little longer, so dont let that stress you out.

So, as a UTSW 1st year I thought I might interject a couple of thoughts. We actually just had our first test today, as I am sure my classmates an I mentioned if we saw you at lunch on Sat. I think that medical is competitive not in the sense that people are out to get one another but, they simply want to do well. When you put a group of people together who have all excelled in their undergraduate persuits, this work ethic is ingrained. Anyway, when you consider a school that has grades or uses a bell curve just realize that most other schools are doing the same thing and may just disquise it as something else e.g. UTMB awards honors to the top 15% only. Are Biochem is 20% A, 30% B+, 30% B and 20% C. Some classes don't use the bell curve (anatomy) and other classes are striclty pass/fail (ethics and embryology). The reason we have the bell curve is to make it easier for the school to tell residency programs where we stand in the class and so they are not trying to differentiate b/w a 92.97 and a 92.93. Nearly all school have some internal ranking. Anyway, I think my classmates are pretty cool and diverse. As for the reputation of a lot of gunners I will just say we have people who want to do well and put alot into there studies. I don;t get a sense that people are out to get one another. Anyway I am pretty tired from our test so will stop here with this long post.

Good post.

I have a question, and I know that some people might flame me, but I am curious none the less. I got three early interviews: TCOM July, TAMU 8/4 and UTSA 8/14. Now it has been quit on the home front. I was curious if other people got three interviews really fast and then now patiently waiting, waiting, waiting for that next e-mail to come from the other 4 schools? Also, what are people's experience and knowledge about selection criteria used by the other schools? Why would I get interviews really fast at three schools, but not at the other schools? Please note that I am not complaining. I am very thankful for the interviews that I have had; however, I was just wondering if there were any others in this similar situation. And if there is anyone else out there that can spread some light on this matter.

I'm with you dude. From TMDSAS schools, I only got 3 interviews very early (UTMB 8/4, TAMU 8/10, and TTU 8/18.) I also got Baylor on 9/8, but I haven't heard about any new TMDSAS interviews in almost a month. I guess we just have to hang in there.

(Also, remember something that one of the doctors that I shadow told me: "The magic number for Med. School admissions isn't 4.0, it isn't 45, it's 1. You only need 1 acceptance." At first I thought that it was kind of a cheesy and obvious statement, but I'm finding myself liking it more and more since my interview invitations seem to have stopped.)

Good luck!

Dude, no flaming from me. I've been wondering the same thing. Real quick interviews from 4x schools, absolute silence since then. UT-H, UTSW, and a few out-of-state schools all giving interviews but not to me. Like Jota said, all we need is one each. I'm trying to give up all hope of understanding the process, but resignation isn't really a talent with me.

😡 😡 😡

ARRrrrrrrgggghhhhhh!!!!! Come on Texas schools throw me a bone.

Well y'all, we can't just assume that we'll get interviews at all the TX schools. Last year, I would see the SDNers getting interview really fast at all the TX schools, and I assumed that I would be one of them, too. But the truth is that it doesn't work out that way and each school is looking for the right person for their school, not for "a TX med school." Now I hope that all of us get interviews at all of the TMDSAS schools, but its okay if we don't because the schools want students that are the right fit for them and only they can make that call.

Does anyone else feel less certain about their interviews as time passes? (no offense intended for those w/o interviews) I have left all my interviews feeling good about my chances, but then as the days go by and I'm replaying the interview over in my head I start thinking that what I thought was a positive response was actually not. I'm hoping that this is just further manifestation of my recently aquired paranoia.

I'm the same way. There's going to be no way to stop it from bugging you (at least that's my expereince,) but if you don't like the way you answered certain questions, just try to think of ways to improve for your next interviews. That way you can at least use your paranoia to your advantage.

Yeah, but you have to take into concern the fact that most of the super competitive types won't be coming to these types of events. I know I'm generalizing, but they're probably at home studying. Some of that is true, but the pressure to succeed at this school is self-imposed. My wanting to do well hasn't nothing to do with outdoing anyone and everything to do with doing my personal best. The curve is a concern, but after the release of the 1st exam scores yesterday, I think folks are glad our grading for biochem isn't on an absolute grading scale because if you went by raw scores, no one amongst the 235 of us made a true 'A' on the test.

As for the Saturday lunch, I think it says more about us that there were tons of MS1s there to speak with you guys.

hey guys (and especially utsw students), how strict is utsw on their premed prerequisites. it says on the website that i need 6 hours of english with a grade of at least a C. unfortunately, i just claimed credit (and no grade) as a freshman and thought that would take care of any english requirements. do i need to take some english classes next semester or would they let me get by with the credit? thanks.

Check their website but I am 99.9% sure that all the state schools in Texas accept CLEP, if that is what you are talking about.

Hope that helps.
