What are people doing about thank you cards?

last year, the majority of people on SDN and the people i knew sent thank you cards/emails (to those who only gave you an email) to their interviewers but not the adcoms.

side question: i've submitted my tmdsas app, but i haven't gotten all my letters in (stupid slow recommenders). it's the only thing i have left. some of y'all have gotten interviews w/o letters. does that mean that tmdsas went ahead and processed it?

It's not really possible. Especially if you are interested in campus tours, etc. All of the schools to which I have been invited for an interview had interview day schedules > 1/2 day.

Look at your TMDSAS status page. It will tell you the date that your application was processed and sent to schools (it will be blank if it hasn't been processed yet.) Also, they sent me an email when I was processed, so if you haven't received such an email, you probably haven't been processed yet. Yes, they will process without LORs.

The doc I have been shadowing does med school interviews and thinks getting "thank you" notes afterward is pointless... interviewing students is part of her job and she submits the evaluation within a couple of hours of the interview, so don't expect a thank you note to improve your eval. You might ask around and see how other docs feel about them.

If you are sending thank-you cards as a way to improve your chances of getting into medical school, you are right, it is pointless. But on the level of professionalism and thanking them for giving you the opportunity to interview at their school, I think it is appropriate. i'd try mailing them in this fashion.

name, md
department (and subdept if necessary)
address of school

if you were interviewed by a student i would call davey or lee jones, tell them the student's name, and ask for the student's school po box.

thank you notes go in the same category as being nice to the secretary and to other people on the admit staff. mostly, those thank you notes get thrown into your file. nice evidence of being 'conscientous' and 'polite.' probably not going to tip any scales, but it shouldn't hurt.

I remember you! Wow, I'm glad to have actually met an SDNer in real life. Hope your day went well. My last interview was late and by the time I got to the mixer all the cookies were gone! I was asking a bunch of people if they knew about SDN and most had not heard of it - or would admit to only "visiting" at some point. This one guy (MS2?) talked about SDN and I asked him about EvoDevo. He said he knew him but EvoDevo wasn't around at the time. There were a couple of other SDNers I'd have loved to meet.

That game looks awesome, I'm waiting to play it when I get done with Vice City. I'm trying to finish all three (GTAIII, Vice City, and San Andreas) Although I have to wait a considerable amount of time after playing each one because it gets somewhat tedious since all three games are so alike.

Had an invite from Southwestern by friday, and got one from UT-H and UTMB on monday. Just waiting on Baylor, A&M, and UT-SAN now, but still got to get my LOR' s sent out which is probably the holdup. Funny thing is all the interviews are for the same week.

I find myself getting excited now. The interviews are making the whole process seem much more real all of a sudden. And as a 27 year old nontrad, the all important realization of quiting my job and going back into debt is starting to creep into my waking thoughts.

I went to TCOM interview yesterday, and I was tempted to ask other interviewees if they are on SDN...but then fear of them looking me like i was nuts like you said held me back

I don't know, their first round of interviews certainly doesn't seem to include the sub-3.6 GPA crowd (ie, me!) but there could always be a second round, after they've had time to go through the applications with lower numbers in more detail.

I wonder whether UVa has the same policy, by the way, all the mdapps profiles that show a 2007 interview invite from them are 3.6+ and 31+, but that might not mean much -- there are only twelve on there so far...

Anyway, congrats, TroyJS, that's quite a haul. And nice of them to pack it all into one week for you, too.

I only have a 30P with around a 3.5GPA and recieved a UVA invite for 9/21. I am a minority... but OOS. They also have a history of liking people from my undergrad univ.

Congratulations! I hadn't seen you on my search because you are listed under 2010 instead of 2007... ah, such a neat theory for why they hadn't liked me yet but would like me soon, totally blown apart.

And I think you have to take the border-liner off your sig now, because borderliners don't get interviews at UVa!

Thanks for your support! Maybe I just slipped through the cracks?! Anyway, I guess I can be the example of hope for everyone that you can get interviews at reach schools... pretty darn early too! 🙂

Me neither. I think I am in the same boat with UT-H. They have now had multiple rounds of interviews since I submitted. I guess that statement about them not liking engineers is really true, although I noticed that WestTexasRambler was a business major (one of the other majors that UT-H says they look down upon,) so maybe they just didn't like my picture or something.

UTSA is perplexing to me, but I am holding out hope since it doesn't seem like they have invited for too many rounds of interviews yet.

When were you processed? My point was that I was processed on 6/21. I think lilTXcatMD may have even been a week earlier or so....

I was processed on 6/21 as well... and only UTMB and UTSA interviews. I thought i would be competitive enough to get interviews at the others, but I've only heard from UVa the past few weeks (a school with higher numbers). Doesn't make sense to me, but I figure I won't get discouraged till the end of september or so.
