Did anyone get an invitation to a reception by Texas Tech Medical School Alumni? It's held in Houston on September 12th, 2006. What does this mean? Does it mean that I have an interview invite there and just don't know about it? I mean, why would they invite me to this reception if they weren't planning on interviewing me, right?
I was invited to their Dallas reception last year and went. I was not offered an interview. I think they just invite everyone applying whose in the area.

That's what I said. I said the same thing when I saw how they changed their secondary this year. It was so nitpicky, but last year's was really simple.

This is a dumb question and I thought I knew the answer, but some stuff I've read on mdapps profiles is making me confused. After we've had our interviews at the TX schools, can they reject us before the match or do they wait until the match to "reject" us? Thanks.

Man that is tricky...

As a side note, I just got the letter from Houston thanking me for my Aug 4th interview... You all had me worried 😳

you aren't rejected until the match if you didn't match or waitlist at any schools. the only thing they can do until feb15 is accept you.

Are you sure? it seems like in some profiles people got rejected before the match... maybe not though.

Link some of those profiles. I received rejection letters from TX schools pre-match last year, but that was because I didn't receive an interview. They basically just said, "we're done w/ interviews...sorry, but you're not going to be invited to interview."

hey yourmom, did you want me to read over your essay? I didn't get it from you.

I saw this and thought he was rejected from TTU before the match, but you can't really tell without dates:

No one from Baylor U going to San Antonio on 9-11????

I need a ride. You will be reimbursed nicely for it. I can make good conversation/be nice to you/juggle apples, etc.

Please don't make me take a greyhound (C-R-E-E-P-Y), and I'm trying not to leave my bank account blank by paying for an expensive plane fare. 🙁

😍

Southwest has $44 each way... that's hardly more expensive than a tank of gas.

Baylor U is located in Waco, TX. Southwest only flies from Dallas (the closest bigger city) or Austin. I don't have a car to drive either way.

But thanks anyway.

How about getting a rental car?

Haha,

I am going to get my butt kicked for posting this, but I don't have my driver's license yet...as a matter of fact, I've never driven on a highway.

:scared: **hiding under the desk waiting for taunts***:scared:

And even if I did, with insurance and costs for ~2days it would cost me about $20 less than the plane from Waco...

I can PAY for the plane fare (I actually have a ticket on hold, just in case), but the only thing is that this is my first interview and I'm worried about running out of money, because I don't really have that much to begin with.

Thanks to anyone who has tried to help...

Pemberly, BCM and Baylor University are not affiliated. As I recall they may have been at one time (long time ago.)

EDIT: Here's the story from the Wikipedia article on "Baylor University" in case anybody is interested.

In 1900, three physicians founded the "University of Dallas Medical Department", in Dallas, despite the fact that a "University of Dallas" did not exist. In 1903, it was acquired by Baylor University and became known as the Baylor College of Medicine, remaining in Dallas. In 1943, Dallas civic leaders wanted to build larger facilities for the university in a new medical center, but only if the College of Medicine would surrender its denominational alliances with the General Baptist Convention. Baylor refused, and with funding from the M. D. Anderson Foundation and others, the College of Medicine moved to Houston. In 1969, the Baylor College of Medicine became independent from Baylor University. However, Baylor University and Baylor College of Medicine have entered into an agreement through the Baylor2 program that provides five Baylor undergraduates with full tuition scholarships and acceptance into Baylor College of Medicine. Additionally, Baylor University President and CEO John M. Lilley is a member of the Baylor College of Medicine Board of Trustees.

My sis went to Baylor U and said there was a shuttle to Love Field and DFW that left from campus. Do a search on the Baylor site.

Hello everyone.

I'm here to put everything in perspective.

I interviewed with a friend of mine, Walker Best, at UT Houston on Friday. That night he was killed in College Station.

Getting into med school is insignificant. Tell everyone you love that you love them today.

Thanks for the reply 🙂 ! But I've taken the shuttle before, it's $105 round trip, and most of the time it's just as cheap to travel from Waco...

I was hoping there were some fellow students from Baylor U that browse SDN and are going to interview in SA on 9-11, who were willing to take me along. The question still stands (anyone?).

I'm sorry for your loss, 12thmd. When somebody dies so young, it seems as if the universe ought to have some sort of court of appeals where you can protest the unfairness of the thing. But it doesn't.

It's good to remember from time to time that this med school admissions process is quite literally not a life-or-death experience

Wow, that is incredibly sad. As a fellow Aggie I am truly disheartened by someone with such a bright future passing so early. And I don't mean to sound like a d*ck, but what the hell was he thinking?...

My thoughts as well. I mean you're not supposed to be climbing on MOVING trains especially in the middle of the night. I actually drove by the scene around 3:30 that morning and we knew instantly what had happened. It is very sad, and I'm sorry for your loss.

Anyway, good luck to everyone starting school this week and let the med schools hand out tons of interview invites this week as well!

any interview offer for out of staters?

I'm from CA, submitted early July and haven't heard a thing.

i'm a ny resident, went to school at UT though. interview at tcom on the 31st and a&m on the 7th

thanks for the reminder. That's really terrible news. I'm sure he had a bright future ahead of him and would have made an incredible doctor.

I'm very sorry to hear about the loss of a fellow Aggie. My heart goes out to his friends and family.

I got a card also, I'm still on the fence about whether or not I'm going to go. I think it's just a way for them to recruit you a little bit without driving all the way out to Lubbock or El Paso. I'm pretty sure they know they're inconvienent compared to other In State schools, so that's probably why they're doing it.

Alright, it's monday. Lets make it a good week for interview invites and interviews!

Just got an interview at A&M on 9/21!!! Anyone else?

Hopefully this is the beginning of a busy week for all of us still waiting to hear.

:luck:

Congrats!!!! When did you receive the completion email from ANM?

Congrats!!!! When did you receive the completion email from ANM?

They acknowledged my secondary and fee (sent 8/01) on 8/11 and my letters (sent 8/07) on 8/25.

(and an aside, yay desi people)

I just need to vent somewhere. 4 out of 5 of my people had their letters in early- une. But of course I waited and waited and waited for the last one which was finally received last week, at which time UT's health professions office has been closed and moving and just told me they 'might' be able to send it out at the end of the week. I'm so F$#T%$^#$^# FRUSTRATED!!! I just feel so helpless!!!! I've been calling and calling and e-mailing and calling for a month now.

So to make this into a quesiton,

Does anyone know which TX schools will grant interviews without having received the LOR's??

At the very least SW will, but I think some others do like UTH.

Does anyone have a good website that in detail explains insurance healthcare issues? I'm having a hard time sorting through some of the stuff on the web. Thanks!

Any Aggies going to tech on 9/6 and want to car pool?

Just got back from my UTHSC-SA interview. LOVED IT!!! I was really impressed by the school and it's students. I'll post some feedback shortly.

I also got an email interview invite from UT-Houston!!!! Woot! It's been a heck of a day. Now to pack and head back to Houston to start classes a day late 😉

I got an invite today from UTSA!!! WHOOP for my first interview. Anyone heading there on 9/18? I'll be the strawberry blond there...

I know a really great website that explains it all very thoroughly... but if I give it to you, that might make you a better applicant and you might take my spot. Sorry man, survival of the fittest.

(joke)

First interview invite to UTSW 9/30! Actually I got it sometime last week, but it's officially confirmed now for 10/21. Yippee!! Had to change it because I teach on weekends, which means I won't want to schedule interviews till after Oct. 8 when my class is over. I know that's not too late, and I won't let you premeds convince me that it is!

Besides, interviewing on 10/21 means I save money on airfare because I'll just be coming back from an all expense-paid conference, so I'll already have my business clothes and just finished rubbing elbows with upper echelon (aka "adult") folks, then I'll crash in Dallas with my uncle, who'll drive me back to Houston yeah! 😍 I love planning. And free stuff. And that this is convenient as hell, I know not much else will be.

For those of you applying to Baylor, how long did it take until your Baylor stat page show reception of your letters of recommendation after you or your health committee sent out the letters?

Thanks.

Congrats, I hope you driving with your uncle to spend some time. Cause the gas will be way more than the 50 dollar southwest fare back to houston, not to mention, it's an hour flight.

Oh ha, right. I have been meaning to visit him up there for the past x number of years, so I owe him the time. But he makes the trip to Houston almost every other week, so I don't think he would mind the company nor would I mind a free ride where I don't have to ask my dad to drive an hour to the airport to pick me up.

Thanks somemaybedoc!

I have no idea. Dude, you have to chill.

I'm just trying to get a better idea so after a certain period of time I'll know to maybe contact my university's health committee to submit the letters again... several out of state schools already acknowledged reception early last week.

Z, why did you edit your post? I thought it was good the first time 😉

Just got back from UTSA. I am very surprised to say that I actually really liked the place. I don't really want to live in San Antonio but other than that, I liked everything about it. It almost felt like college with the all the other allied-health schools around there. The people were incredibly friendly and the day was very well organized.

Summary: Loved it.

Just curious, why not San Antonio? I haven't interviewed there, but going into the applications, I was thinking it was one of my first choices of the texas schools.... if only there was one in Austin. 😳
