I'm not a research person - I'm very much a clinical person. I've heard they more go for the research type. Not to mention that I am by nature NOT a competitive person (unless you count being competitive with yourself in which case I'm intensely cut-throat) I think San Antonio/Houston will be more my speed anyway. Plus, if you saw my credit card bill after buying all these plane tickets you would understand 😱
uhhh... ooookay!
seriously folks, UTSW is a big research institution, no doubt about it. It's a big reason why I'm here. But I've never felt pressured to do research at all since the start of med school. It's a medical school that benefits greatly from its ties to a highly regarded graduate school program (and its research celebrities) so of course it's going to seem like research is big here. I think I know more students who (including myself possibly) who plan on practicing primarily as clinicians rather than scientists.
Potato and all my fellow SDNers, I confess that I'm bitter because of the 5 schools where I applied, they're the only one that did'nt acknowledge my greatness with an interview. S.W. hurt my feelings, but from this point forward I promise to quit being a baby.
Eh - no offense but I don't really expect ya'll to understand through the internet. As for the process being random: do you guys really think I'll get into UTSW but NOT San Antonio or Houston which I would rank higher? I'm not saying I'm a definite into any of the schools (in fact I'm scared ****less) but I do think I stand a much better chance at those two schools anyway.
Just to reiterate: I have nothing against UTSW. I just know students there and I know Parkland (which is an awesome hospital I will admit) and it's just NOT for me.
Edit: And I didn't mean to imply that SW doesn't churn out wonderful doctors. Just saying you don't need to go to a ranked school to be a wonderful doctor.
Uh if the school goes to lengths to convince applicants that they arent cutthroat, its not just a couple people talking crap. I don't think it's that simple.I feel that the whole "cut throat" stigma that is given to southwestern is done by people that are jealous that they did not get into southwestern.
Well of course. Who's gonna say something like "God my med school sucked. Hey can I treat you?"In all honesty, some of the nicest, most humble people I know go to southwestern. I have only heard, from the people that I know that go there, that this school is great. All the negative stuff I hear is from people that do not even go to the school.
anyone know the time slots for when the actual interviews take place at UT-H?
My interview is on the 29th from 830-4
anyone know the time slots for when the actual interviews take place at UT-H?
They do them in the morning and the afternoon so it depends but they are scheduled for approximately 30 minutes, from 10:00 to 11:15 with 15 minutes in between. I can't say for the afternoon but it follows a similar format beginning at 1 or so.
As a practiced gunner I must tell you that I missed lunch because of the engaging conversations I had during my interviews and I ate lunch with the Chairman of the Board of Regents for UT, instead. Talk was pretty light but centered around what I thought about Ohio State.
Michael DeBakey caught me walking in front of Baylor and asked me for dinner at his home in Rice Village it went very well and I expect an acceptance from Baylor and UT-H both. I will likely pursue my MD at Baylor and my Ph. D. at UT-Houston.
Sorry, I am in a weird mood.
Michael DeBakey is 97 and has an aortic aneurysm. Let me think..
maybe there is some kind of secret spell i could say to make baylor give me an interview? or at least change the status page so it doesn't say that they know my status, they just don't want to tell me?
Just got back from the Baylor Interview. It was amazing. Definitely my number 1 choice now. I know that's probably true for a lot of people, but after seeing the rest of the Texas Medical Center - we only saw half at the UT-H interview - I am totally convinced that I want to stay in Houston. The people are just incredibly friendly and warm. The student presentations were hilarious. The food wasn't half bad either. They fed us all day long. Everyone there is extremely smart but very welcoming as well. It was like Southwestern meets UTSA.
Seriously. I'm ready to grovel, set up a shrine, whatever... I just want them to admit me! I can't say how impressed I was.
Edit: I was very pleased to meet jota, quantummechanic, and aggiejohn... sorry to have missed pkboi.
Then with all luck maybe I'll meet you in the fall at Baylor!!Just got back from the Baylor Interview. It was amazing. Definitely my number 1 choice now. But thats another story.Uh if the school goes to lengths to convince applicants that they arent cutthroat, its not just a couple people talking crap. I don't think it's that simple.

JHU was pretty cutthroat and they too spend some time trying to convince people they aren't cutthroat.
UTH invite yesterday. Woot.
amen to that. PUHLEEEEZZZZZZZZZZEEEEEE.please give me an interview Baylor. Pretty please with sugar and cream on top? 🙁
Yeah was good to meet you Pem. I remember sitting next to you at UTSA, just didn't know it was you at the time.
Yeah quantummechanic was a pretty cool guy to hang around with. He really loves potato chips!!But thats another story.
I do have one good story to tell. When we sat down for dinner at "home base," I got a Coke and when I was sitting down it dropped under my chair and somehow a tiny hole was punctured into the can. I picked up the can and it shot an 8 foot arc of cola onto other interviewees, including quantummechanic I think. My only response was "Interview Nightmare!!"
At least it was after interviews so it didn't stress me out.

I completely agree -- especially with "It was like Southwestern meets UTSA." I love the curriculum, the grading policy, the schedule, the students, the facilities... it was very nice!
This may sound foolish, but I'm afraid to come out and say that Baylor is my top choice. I am a Texas resident, and I don't have the same advantage that I have with all of the Texas state schools. This means its harder for me to get in. I felt like the quality of applicants at the Baylor interview was very high. If I set it in stone that this is my top choice, I may be setting myself up for failure. (ie. not get in there)
Ultimately I will be happy to get in anywhere, but I'm hesitant to set my heart on one school. Does this make any sense or am I just rambling?
I don't know if you guys remember, but nearing the end of the day when people were getting ready for Two Rows and they were advertising the free food, some tool in a charcoal suit asked if beers were free. I was that guy.
I was also the second vegetarian during introductions to proclaim my love for Indian food.
I just got an interview for Southwestern on September 30 (it's a saturday, thank goodness).
Yipeeeeeeeeeee!!! 😀

It took Tech 2 months to "receive" my letter even though the other schools already had it. When I inquired about that, they told me to call back the following week. I waited a week to call back, but then they told me to wait another week. This went on for a few weeks and then magically my status changed. Hopefully you will have better luck and help.Texas Tech says they haven't received my committee letter...I had it sent in June...JUNE!!!! Everyone else in TX seems to have received it.
I've already sent them an e-mail, but I'm mad at myself for not checking that earlier. 😡
Processed 6/21. First interview invite 7/10. So, approximately 2.5 weeks. I'd bet things are slower now, since a lot of people probably submitted/were processed right before school(s) started up again. Heck, I didn't receive my interview invite to UT-SA until 9/1. Hang in there, and like I told someone in another thread, if you're anything like me, while there is no way that you're going to be able to relax about things, try to put all that nervous energy to good use.i hope i'm not repeating a previously asked question, but how long were y'all processed by TMDSAS before you received interviews? i was processed 8/24 and i'm getting really antsy.
Ultimately I will be happy to get in anywhere, but I'm hesitant to set my heart on one school. Does this make any sense or am I just rambling?
it was nice seeing you in person too! Baylor definitely moved above Vanderbilt on my list so we'll see what happens from here. Best of luck everyone!
It's tough to tell how much we really got to know at their respective interview days. I do have the feeling that Baylor managed to sell themselves much better than Vanderbilt did, but if a Vandy admissions office member asked me exactly what Baylor had done better, I wouldn't really be able to say.
I love them both. But I have to admit, 1.5 pre-clinical years is pretty cool. Not to mention the $96,000 / 4yrs price difference (taken from http://services.aamc.org/tsfreports/report.cfm?select_control=PRI&year_of_study=2006 )...
Totally makes sense. I am absolutely prepared to love any of the places I've interviewed so far, if they just let me in. I just got a UTSW interview offer, and I'm a bit more suspicious of them, but I'm trying to keep an open mind.

Come on, where is the love from Texas schools?
i just got an invite to Tech!
the only two options were 9/22 or 11/10 which isnt very many options at all. I cant make the 9/22 because I have an interview with UTMB so i guess ill just take the november one. Should i call the admissions people to see if I could get an earlier date?
Just got an interview from A&M. I'm happy except for the fact that I'll have to drive to temple. I can't believe they don't provide transportation. That is just ridiculous. Anyways, does anyone have an interview at A&M next thursday and want to car pool to temple? Whoever drives wouldn't have to chip in for gas.
When I had my interview, there was a guy who needed a ride. Someone gave him a ride and Filo/someone from the admissions office staff gave him a ride back to College Station. I don't think he set anything up in advance, but you might check with the admissions office just to make sure.Just got an interview from A&M. last year they shuttled us if we didn't want to drive ourselves. Doesn't your invite ask you if you need a ride?Just got an interview from A&M.
