Any oosers here from UT-Houston? I am getting so nervous. It's definitely my number one.
 
*Note: I am taking this from last year's thread. These are opinions of last year's peoples on pros and cons of each of the different schools. Feel free to add your points to it.

Baylor

+ Highest ranking school in TX (if anyone cares about this)
+ Early clinical exposure
+ TMC
+ Very helpful admin people
+ Interest Tracks (Research, Geriatrics, International, Underserved, Public Health)
+ Incredibly new, nice facilities, obviously has money/resources
+ Accelerated basic sciences allows for very flexible schedule (ex. more preparation for Step 1)

- TMC parking/transportation
- People in other states think that you're going to Baylor University.
- Houston (my opinion)

Texas A&M

+ Friendliest, most caring admin people
+ A&M affiliation
+ Excellent simulation center
+ Small class size (~80)
+ Temple = good place for families

- Split campus
- Not sure about population diversity.

Texas Tech

+ MD/MBA
+ Implementing new curriculum
+ Rural health (if interested)

- Lubbock
- Don't know where you'll end up in the last 2 years.

UTH (I'll leave this to someone who'd interviewed there)

+ TMC
+ If needed, you can expand your basic sciences education to 3 years instead of 2.

- TMC parking/transportation
-Traditional curriculum

UTMB

+ Great opportunity in the indigent care clinic. A chance to give back to the community and gain early clinical experience.
+ Friendly students.
+ Bioethics program
+Bioterrorism and infectious disease research. BSL4 ect.
+PBL curriculum
+Near Beach/ocean....even if mediocre.

- Galveston?
- Older facility

UTSA

+ Loved their admissions focus on the whole person
+ Friendly "real" students
+ San Antonio
+ Choice of spots for clinical years with different focuses
+ Pro-military
+ Cheap housing that's very close to the school

- Facilities seemed a little older/less nice


UTSW

+ Love the 4th year film project.. just something nice outside of medicine.
+ School seems to encourage extracurricular activities.
+Research/many nobel laureates/ great funding.
+Parkland/ clinical opportunities
+High Board scores/ranking

- Traditional curriculum
- Lack of early clinical exposure, though can be addressed through preceptorship?
- More gunners than your average school
 
Does Baylor really have less gunners than UTSW.

I interviewed on Oct 20th and loved it there. Do you know how to check our status there? When I called it seemed like we couldn't. I'm really nervous :scared:

I don't have a clue either. I tried checking the site, and it looks like OOS-ers start getting accepted Oct. 15, and in-states start getting accepted Nov. 15th. I wonder if Nov. 15th is OOS-ers last day to get accepted? If so, I'm even more nervous.
 
I'm hoping to hear back, one way or the other, before my second interview... That way I know how hard I should be working on my interview skills.

a couple of things i would add...
+ Space medicine program that works closely with the Johnson's Space Center

- financial problems
 
this may have already been asked if so i'm sorry...will tx schools email or snail mail early notices??? i have a trip coming up mid november and i'm nervous (not really tho with my stats =P)

If Nov 15th is the last day for us to be accepted I will go in official freak out mode. I wonder how many oosers were interviewed this year, can't be that many. We should set up a phone schedule and question list 😉

Hey. TCOM will call and email you. San Antonio is the only school so far that has sent snail mail. Tech, UT Houston and UTMB have sent out emails first. I don't know about A&M and UT Southwestern..I haven't interviewed there yet. Hope that helps.

You are talking about interview invitations, right? Or are you talking about the Nov. 15th?
 
April MCATer San Antonio invite today.....very pleased with this.

Does anyone know when UTMB stops interviewing? I know on their website there are tenative dates, with Nov. 17th being the last date. But.. that seems so early in comparison to all the other Texas medical schools. And I had a friend who had to reschedule his interview in early August and they gave him an option of Dec. something..

Anyone know more about this? I am still hoping for an interview there!!

Not sure about all the other schools but I can confirm that UTHSCSA sends out interview invite packets via snail mail, and the same goes for their acceptance notices.

The first batch of them for out of staters went out at the beginning of last week.

TAMU & TECH are snailing it starting Nov 15th. I'm hoping not all the TX opt for this medium. I'd rather get an email, maybe even a phone call with a headsup would be nice - likely - probably not; but we can wish. 😛
 
how are you guys finding out how the schools will be sending out acceptances? calling the admissions offices?
 
A phone call would be nice!!!

I would probably be sitting in all my classes and compulsively watching my phone to see if the little red light goes on (it would obviously be on silent mode, so I would have to watch it all the time). Then I would be disappointed if I leave the classroom running when it does and it turns out to be my mom. :scared:

I'm very scared now.

Hey runningmom, I remember you said you had an interview at Baylor last Friday too. I totally forgot about that on the day of, but were you the one that dressed as a beekeeper and your daughter was a bee for Halloween? Just a guess, there weren't too many other ladies who mentioned being a mom. Btw, I was the asian girl in the dark blue skirt suit.

i guess the time is getting closer and closer till the 11/15 date what kinda of celebrations do you guys plan on having. Me a nice book of anatomy lol maybe get some Jack in the Box (I nice joke to ease the building tension)

Can't speak for the other schools, but for UTHSCSA I received my acceptance notification via snail mail (sent Oct. 27th). Since there are fewer OOS acceptances than in-state I'd imagine they'd do the same thing for everyone who is in-state. Calling hundreds of students would just be too much for them probably!

So even though OOS acceptances started on 10-15, you got a letter that was sent on 10-27?

That is going to drive me insane, the waiting.

Well, since we all are talking about Nov 15th acceptances, I have a question? Has anyone’s college of record work been updated? Seems to me that if you should get an early acceptance, at least TMDSAS should verify the transcript? What do you all think? Also, what about the LMFU(Last Master File Update), anyone had change in that?

I know I am preaching to everyone that is feeling the same way I am, BUT I CANT TAKE THIS ANYMORE, ARGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Also, my parents will be out of town next week, so even if I get snail mail stuff, I wont know about it until the week after that, ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. Good luck to everyone.
