Anyone know if any of these TX schools offer Gross Anatomy / research opportunities the summer before?

Trying to figure out what to do with my summer. I really don't want to be working till school starts. I travel a lot already for work already - so that's not really high up on my list.

UTMB has a program called "pre-matric" or something like that. I asked alot about it at the interview, but didn't really get GREAT answers. I know it has gross anatomy and about 1/4 of the students attend.

Baylor has a team beuilding program in the first two weeks - but they start early anyway....

Those are the only two I know of.

Hey everybody -- quick question.

I just celebrated by writing thank-you notes and baking cookies for the profs who wrote my recommendations... only one of them teaches a class I'm in right now, as well. We're a pretty small, tight-knit school... it doesn't cross the sycophantic threshold to bake him cookies in thanks on an occasion like this, right? He knows perfectly well that getting an A doesn't matter to me now, anyway (as if it were ever a danger in relativity!)

I guess I'm just looking for reassurance that I'm not being inappropriate.

Nope - completely appropriate and very throughtful. 🙂

For those of you who recieved tech early acceptances by email yesterday. What do they mean when they say we have to accept or decline the offer by November 30. I thought this early acceptance thing wasnt supposed to be like a way to sign students before the match.

Now i am worried because I feel almost 100% certain i will match at either UTSA or UTH, but not positive I will recieve an early acceptance from either. (at least not in this first round)

If i accept this tech offer will I still be able to go through the normal match process and rank them like 3?

oh ya and i got the email yesterday, and my LMFU was 10/30/06; interviewed 10/20/06;

Yes... you still participate in the match. You can hold ONLY ONE acceptance at the time of the match, but you can rank other schools at which you've interviewed higher.... if you match higher they will automatically take away the lower ranked acceptance and give you the higher.

So ranking for example.... 1 UTH....2 UTSA.... 3 TECH (with acceptance)... you could match at UTH and go there... they will just take TECH away.

Go ahead and accept - you're allowed to hold multiple acceptances till Jan 15th. If you don't get anything from the school you're expecting to hear, you could potentially match on Feb 15 if you rank them higher. If you don't match with them you'll have the 1 school pre-match acceptance you've kept.

Wow, this thread died down quick. I guess people just drift away from SDN after their first acceptance. Too busy celebrating I suppose.

Actually, there have been some technical / server issues getting on studentdoctor.net, so that may be part of the problem.

I think it may be both this and the maintenance issues. The remaining people without acceptances are still clinging to SDN for dear life, I assure you.

I seriously want some prematch love!!!

WOW, what a week! I was accepted at UT-H , A&M, and UTMB on Wednesday, UTSW on Thusrday, AND now Baylor today. I can hardly believe this week is real. And to top it off, I came home today to an interview invite from Columbia.

So fellow SDNers, Knowing what i already have, should i go on the interview? I'm sure i could be happy at any of the other schools, and I'm note sure even if i was accepted to Columbia if it would offer enough to compensate for its HUGE cost in comparison to Texas schools. Any thoughts would be appreciated.... but for now it's time to celebrate!

Congratulations! When did Baylor call?

None of us can answer that for you... all sorts of personal factors are involved. For myself, I wouldn't even think of it, not with the schools you listed already in the bag.

The Dean called me at about 2pm CST

NON-Trad power!

I just got an interview invite at UT-Houston!! I'm very excited....I was feeling a little depressed not hearing from any schools since my August MCAT scores came out. Good luck to other August MCAT'ers waiting for an interview!

Today my LMFU changed from 11/16 to 11/17.😕

The UTSA Statement of Intent form has a check box to indicate your desire to apply for a competitive scholarship. Why would there be a check box? Why would something like that be optional? Would there be anyone who wouldn't check it? Thoughts? 😕

Bizarre. 😕
I'd say check it.

psssst... just check it and don't ask silly questions. You have to "apply" for it. You will in all likelihood get it if you "apply." It rocks for an OOS student to get this, and it's not about the amount of the "scholarship," but rather the in-state tuition benefit you get by legally hitting the mark you have to in order to be allowed to get the in-state waiver. Who really cares which bureaucratic rules are being adhered to by making you "apply?" Now... check the box and then... shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.......... or better yet. DON'T check it and maybe they'll give me even MORE money mwuhahahahahah.

If you interviewed in August and didn't get accepted to your school of choice this week, what is the likelihood of hearing from that school prior to the match? Have schools already given out all of their early acceptances?

I don't think any of us are able to answer your question, but some guesses. A&M and Tech seem to have far fewer acceptances and seems to be hand picking applicants. Others seem to be mass emails. Regardless, many people have multiple acceptances and will have to give them up, IF they give them up earlier, then the rest of us will have a better shot of sleeping more soundly at night

oh and just as an observation, it seems most people who got prematch offers have something that sets them apart. whether it be URM, very nice mcat+GPA, extraordinary hospital experience, or nontraditional status.

anyone agree with me on this?

Just curious, did anyone else get their UT Houston acceptance letter today? I was hoping to get it in the mail, but alas...

Not as exciting as an acceptance, but I just got an interview to UT-Houston, my number one choice. I'm so happy!!

Seriously...I hope we hear some 😍 soon. In the meantime, I offer you the invitation to join the Rambler-Diana rooting team! 😉

Definitely!

I believe Diana, you were the original rooter. So you can be in charge of distributing the rooting evenly via rotation, thus, you will be called the Rotation Rooter (Rotorooter for short 😀).

-Go team-

I interviewed at UT-H on Nov. 3, and my LMFU chaged to 11/16 today from 11/3, but no acceptance ..

Dibs, I interviewed on the same day! My LMFU never changed to reflect getting my interview, but did change later, to 11/16 just like yours. Did you get your nice "thank you for interviewing" letter from UT-H in the mail today? Talk about a cruel joke... just when you think you've been accepted ... 😕

Still waiting for mine.

First all, congrats to all those who got their early acceptances this past week. I bet that's a huge relief off of your shoulders.

Secondly, If anybody has any questions about UTMB, shoot questions my way. I'm a MSI there and thoroughly enjoying every minute of it. I'd strongly urge everyone to go here...however, if you want a more thorough answer about each and every school, i'd highly recommend somehow talking to the students there. Keep in mind that its not always about grades and scores, but its also about keeping sane during the whole time.

Thirdly, i remember seeing something on here about UTMB's Step I scores. For those who want to know, we were given the most recent scores (I think class of 2008) and they had 99% pass rate (only 1 failure) with the average being 228-229 (92). I think we are currently 2nd in texas in board scores (only behind Baylor).

Fourthly, for those asking about pre-matric...i don't think its necessary. Its primarily gauged towards those who have either been out of school for a couple of years. It basically goes over everything we are going to cover in first year during your summer (It doesn't go too too in-depth, but its a good review from what i hear). I was out of school for 2 years before starting, didn't attend, and i don't feel behind one bit.

I have a question: Once you get an acceptance, can the other schools see that acceptance? I am wondering because I am still waiting for (hopefully) more interview invites. Thanks!

That's awesome!!! If you don't mind me asking, when did you interview at Baylor?

give up your texas seats so the rest of us can have a chance 😉

im just kidding though, if i were in your position, i would just pass on the interview, but if you are pretty serious about Columbia, then go for it.

Yup got the letter, and believe me I was shaking while opening it!But alas....

Oddly the letter was dated Nov 4, and mailed on Nov 13..my mind is running through all sorts of possibilities.

Also, y'all ..any suggestions as how I can get myself an interview at UTMB ... I sent them an update letter too 😛

i got three pre-match offers and im sitting with a 3.83 and a 28 mcat? i dont want to sound like a dick, im only trying to offer insight to the mess of a system called tmdsas.

If you dont mind me asking, Do you have anything spectacular on your app like lots of ECs. Also what offers do u have?

Thanks

29 MCAT and a 3.7 GPA with 6 acceptances so far (4 TX and 2 OOS) out of 12 interviews total. I am non-trad but I doubt that was the key in this process.

Hang in there future_dr_house and good luck! :luck:

If we haven't gotten an email from UTSW yet, should we assume no prematch offer? What's y'all's take?

yea no problem... actually nothing really spectacular, i mean i did do organic chem research for 2 years, and just some minor hospital volunteering/shadowing... nothing much other then that............ i did end up with a publication, but that was after my application process.

hey texas!

when someone gets something in the mail from any of the schools (by 'something' i mean like a big packet rather than just a letter) will you please post what kind of information is included? i have some questions i would like to email to schools, but would hate to be redundant if the answer is right in front of me. the mail in dallas is notoriously slow in my neigborhood, so it might be a while before i get anything. thanks muchly!

So, my friend's dad is an interviewer at UT-H, and he said that even some of the best candidates will not receive pre-match offers. He said it was due to the fact that some interviewers simply do not recommend any pre-match acceptances until all interviewing is over.

I was just on the tmdsas site checking my LMFU (which is still 110306) and up in the top right hand corner i noticed that there is a Validation date, and mine reads 000000.....anyone know what this is and whether or not i should be worried about it? ive interviewed at all the UT schools but have no acceptances yet. any help would be great, thanks.

It doesn't matter, mine reads the same and I have a couple of offers.

If somebody doesn't have an interview yet, does that mean that they are screwed? Do Texas residents keep interviewing after December?

How will SES affect the application?

Today my LMFU changed from 11/16 to 11/17.😕

My LMFU says 11/17 as well. I know it had said 11/15. I didn't check between. The 11/17 does strike me as odd since my last pre-acceptance offer came 11/16 and I wasn't expecting anything else. I'm guessing the schools update TMDSAS first then inform us.

If I have a change of address, do I only need to update it on the TMDSAS website or should I send my new address to the individual schools as well?

I would do both just to be on the safe side!

By the way, I started a UTH Class of 2011 thread in the Allopathic Class Threads Forum, so all you future classmates or those still undecided check it out!

I started one for Southwestern as well. The title reads Class of 20011, but I meant to write 2011. 🙂

I gave up an interview spot at A&M for the thirtieth!!! I hope that one ya'll missing out on the TX love get my spot!! Good luck to all of you!!!

If you had to pick between these 2? Which one?

I LOVE UTMB's curriculum and awesome step 1 scores. It seems like there system works darn well. Nice facilities. Nice campus. People are awesome.

BUT...

TMC is freaking amazing and I love UTH. BUT, their Step 1 scores aren't as hot. I think their pass rate is 93%? Does anyone know precisely? And their curriculum is more traditional...although there is some PBL stuff 2nd year.

Summary:
UTMB seems to get the job done, "hands-down." It is safe in terms of preparation. UTH doesn't seem as "water-tight," but it's a freaking dreamworld and I am obsessed with being there.

ADVICE please from people who know both schools?

Your Step 1 scores are a result of your effort...not the school.

Your Step 1 scores are a result of your effort...not the school.

To some extent that is true, but I'm wondering if the new PBL at UTMB and Step 1 prep is just more effective than that at UTH? Both schools have students with about the same GPA and MCAT. Probably a similar composite of work ethics too. So, why would there be this discrepancy. I wish UTH would just release the Step 1 pass rate results for the past 5 years. UTMB showed the past 3 or 4 during the presentation on interview day.

(Not whining...this is a tremendous choice to have. I feel extremely blessed, and these acceptances have humbled me.)
