I am basing this on SDN, but I am also basing it on friends who have interviewed there and people who I have talked with on the interview trail. If you look on the TMDSAS stats page UTH's averages for their matriculants are on par with the rest of the med schools (except with Baylor and UTSW) so I'm hoping to get a response from someone who has applied last year and maybe seen the same trend.

DianaUT06 said she heard from UTH about this time last year so it leads me to believe that there are a lot more qualified people applying this year and this may be due numerous MCAT dates and people having the choice of taking it over whenever.
 
i'm in galveston right now for utmb interview tomorrow. which parking garage do i park in? the instructions say lot 93 which is a far walk from building 12 (where the day begins). Lot 69 is right next to building 12 so i was wondering where people parked when they interviewed with utmb?
 
For those who dont have interviews this weekend, I'm ending my ****ty week with a BBQ in Austin and if anyone wants to meet and come to visit thats fine with me. Just let me know who wants to show up. Thanks

The numbers seem pretty competitive at UTH. At least on par with the others sans SW and Baylor. I have a friend close to an adcom member at UTMB who says UTMB is much more "stat oriented" this year - not good news for me. Who knows really.

I would agree with that statement. From myself and some friends of mine who haven't received interviews from UTMB, I gather they are becomming more more stat oriented. Last year I had no problem getting an interview...this year it's a completely different story.

I don't call shots anymore. I got my hopes up for absolutely nothing last year and I'm not going thru that again.
 
hey, for those of you who went to the friday program before the southwestern interview, what did yall think? would you recommend going/ not going? just wondering if it'll be worth my time.

can i get some advice?
do yall think i should retake the mcat in january or april. perhaps if i take it in january and waitlisted, i could update for this cycle? but i dont know if i could be absolutely ready for jan. whatever happens, im screwed.

The match isn't in 2 months. The first batch of acceptances comes November 15th, but the match doesn't happen until february 1st. There's still some time.
 
my SA interview isn't for a while, but you have to go to the social! It's at one of my favorite bars in town. Make sure you go but you better like beer....

Hey everyone, I had a quick question about something. Not sure if anyone knows the best way about this but I was curious to know if anyone has sent a letter of interest to a school. I want to send one because of certain ties I have but I'm not sure if I should send it to the admissions office (where it might be ignored with all the other emails they get) or the actual dean of admissions (who doesn't know me and may not care about my email). Any thoughts or suggestions?

I sent one directly to the Dean of admissions at a school with positive results.

is it too early to send LOI as an OOS applicant who wants to let a certain school know that they seriously wanna go there?

should i just wait to see if i get waitlisted (and not rejected) and then consider sending one or could sending one now help more?


btw, does anyone know if they seriously start accepting OOS on 10/15, i'm getting anxious!

like I said, I've already sent one, and it's worked to my advantage. this was to an OOS school that numerically I shouldn't have been competitive at. I sent the LOI back in August or maybe even late July.

Pretty ok I guess. I might have stumbled a bit at some interviews but I'm blocking that from my mind right now. I have one tomorrow at UTSW which hopefully I won't screw up. haha How have yours been? I notice you have four invites!

I haven't actually been to any, my first is at Tech next week. I need to prepare for it this weekend, but hopefully it will go alright.
 
if you happened to be at UTMB today and had a couple crazy girls yelling good luck to you guys -- that was me and a friend 🙂

next week we probably won't be so nice.. its our first exam... yikes!

I was talking to someone yesterday and they said that some schools require Biochem. He specifically mentioned UTSA. I haven't taken Biochem yet, but I plan to in the spring. However, I did not mention this anywhere on my application. What should I do about this? Should I notify TMDSAS or the schools that require it? Also, I haven't Cell Biology. Do any schools require that? I have taken Micro and Genetics. The only reason I ask was that I was expecting a couple more interview invites. I have only had two (Tech and TCOM). Should I get a couple more? My stats are OK (3.77, 29R).

I have several friends who have gotten interviews at UTHSCSA without biochem. I don't think any texas medical schools require cell biology. Hopefully you'll hear from more schools soon. Good luck with that!
 
I called to ask about biochem a few months back and the guy told me that they would like for their future students to have had biochem before they get into med school but it is not required.

Cell Biology is not required by anyone, as far as I know. However, Biochemistry is required by UTHSCSA, although not having taken it will not affect whether or not you get an interview. I interviewed at UTHSCSA and I remember the Dean talking about one student from a few years back who was accepted but had not taken Biochemistry at their undergrad and was forced to take the class online through the medical school before matriculation. So I think it'd be a good idea to take it next semester if you can.

She gave it at the end as parting advice and immediately got me out the door saying we were out of time (we were five minutes over), so I have no time to save myself. I know, ouch! Did anyone have such an interviewer at UTSW? How should I do damage control in my thank you note? (Should I send a thank you note or card in this case?) Please give me some advice!

what did you do that was so bad?

i don't think damage control will help much. it's obvious that she probably won't recommend you. just learn what you can and move on. prep better for your next interview.

I have been ushered out of the door a few times before, but I don't really think it means anything negative. I think they really were in a hurry (or maybe I'm just being naive), so don't feel too bad about that. I guess if your performance didn't go well (seeing that she gave you advice and all), just try to do better at your other interviews and don't let it get you down. Besides, you never know, maybe your other interviewer's opinion of you might turn things around. You're also in good company. Sometimes I have said things that make me want to slap myself haha.
 
Do both interviewers have to recommend you to get accepted? Should I ask for a re-interview? I think my other interviewer will give me a glowing recommendation, while this one will give the opposite. What kills me inside is that I've had tons of practice and mock interviews as well as an actual interview, but her total lack of response throughout the interview was really unnerving. She just sat there and looked at me the entire time, hardly cracked a smile, and hardly responded. If you don't get an interviewer like this person, I think you will be fine. She wasn't happy with my articulation/communication. Sorry, it's still too painful to go into actual details about the specifics of what she said.

I'm not so worried about her ushering me out the door as much as her telling me what not to do in interviews. My two interviews were polar opposites. The other interviewer told me that he hoped to be my professor when I became a student there. I would rather have had two lukewarm interviews than one totally bad one and one totally good one.

well, the fact is that none of us can actually suggest what will happen. maybe she says mean things to all her interviewees. who knows? maybe your other interviewer will overshadow the negativity of this one woman. in any case, don't stress. all you can do is wait and see.

just try to do your best on your remaining interviews.
 
Thanks. I'm counting on the other professor's recommendation to overshadow this one's. I was also kind of hoping that this offering of advice is some sort of test that she gives her interviewees.
 
I hope my interviewer at UTSW with my entire profile has more influence than the interviewer with just my personal statement. I think she liked me better.
 
I hope so too. The lady that didn't like me was the blind interviewer, and the one that liked me was open file.

Well chances are if she's generally a harsh interviewer, the admissions committee might take it into account from past experience and reconsider her comments.
 
See, the thing is, I'm afraid that she was only harsh with me, I didn't get a chance to talk to the other people who interviewed with her. That's my only fear, but I don't think I'm terrible, seeing as my first interviewer loved me. But thanks for the words of consolation.

I just got to San Antonio but forgot to bring the paper interview schedule for the med school. My interview is this monday the 17th (but any of san antonios schedules should work). If someone could post the schedule for me I would really appreciate it. Thanks
 
Biochem is required at UTHSCSA (at least as of last year). Last year was the first class to have it required. In terms of having it completed, you don't have to let them know if you haven't taken it yet because it's not required until matriculation (i.e. proof of having taken it isn't due until at least the week before registration begins).
