Texas Interviews 2008: Part 2

I was processed 7/17 and have received interviews from all Texas schools except UTH and UTHSCSA, does anyone else have a similar situation or a possible explanation? I find it kind of odd that I got a UTSW and Baylor invite and a cold shoulder from these two.. 🙁
 
Going to San Antonio pretty shortly here. Anyone else with interviews tomorrow, feel free to PM me.

I'm completely lame and will be sitting in a Coffee shop studying for a a physiology class most of the afternoon, but will be going to the social for sure.

Lecture Hall Building. When you enter just walk to your right and everyone should be there. http://utmaps.uthscsa.edu/ You can find the building there, as soon as you turn in the main entrance you can see the building, it is attached to the library

I've gotten invites from UTSW and Baylor but nothing from UTHSCSA. Supposedly, from what I hear, they're more into extracurriculars than MCAT/GPA like Southwestern and Baylor.
 
It's about time for another interview! Surely Texas schools have depleted their sources of 40 MCAT 3.9 GPAers.

san antonio seems to be taking their tame. Look at the processing dates for all the people who have interviews. I just got an interview and I was processed 7/11
 
Some higher up at SA recently said that they have filled up their interview spots for the month of Sept. and October. Don't lose hope if you haven't heard back because they haven't given out their Oct. invites yet. Its always on a delay. (I didn't hear this personally, but from a friend).

And I remember Dr. Jones at an interview saying that they don't interview people with just high mcat/gpa because they know the person wont even go to SA and might have other higher ranked schools as an option. So they try to interview others instead.

I was processed on 6/20 so that was awhile before you, and I still haven't gotten an invite. I think they've already rejected me. haha

That's good, at least I have time to take it in the spring.
 
BUbot and others, maybe you should call UTHSCSA's admissions office and ask about your status. A friend of mine's invite was lost in the mail.

Correct me if I'm wrong (I don't have my UTHSCSA info in front of me)...but I believe this year they are giving you a way out by saying that you can replace biochem with an extra X amount of biology hours. It seems like I read that somewhere.

Really...that would be really nice. I haven't taken biochem, but I'm interviewing next monday...I'll ask them about that.
 
i remember them saying that we had to take it but that we could take it through this online program during the summer, which is what some current medical students did

Nope. They made us sign a piece of paper while we were there at the interview saying that we were aware we MUST HAVE biochemistry in order to matriculate. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. It wasn't just about biochem, though, it listed all the other standard prereqs as well.

You're correct, I found my paper as well. And I found out where I got that impression...I must have misread the viewbook (found on their website) wrong. It states: "Biochemistry: 3 semester hours (substitute for 3 hours of Biology)" I took it by meaning you could replace it, but they just mean that 3 out of your total bio hours must be biochem. Ah ha! Not that this matters to me anyways, lol. Glad I've taken it already. 👍

I had four (of the 8) interviews in August, but it's been quiet on invites for a few weeks. Is this normal or is anybody else going thru this?
 
i guess they are going to send them out in batches.

Schools are receiving a high volume of applications with exactly 2 weeks left before everything is due. No doubt they are swamped with applications are being more picky about sending out invites. Nothing we can do but wait.

I've made sure to make NO assumptions in this process, otherwise I would have broken down since Southwestern hasn't invited me yet. -_-

Also goes to show you that is handed to you on a silver platter, no matter what your circumstances are.
 
Got back from UTHSCSA a little while ago.

Thoughts:

- Really pretty area
- Real Estate Amazingly Cheap
- Kickass opportunities
- Holy crap, people weren't lying. There really is a great atmosphere there, great people, and there's not really a better way to describe it.

Interviews both went REALLY well, but I'm still going to reserve any over joyment until I actually get an acceptance.

-Admissions person actually said that we were still early in the process at this interview date.
-Interview dates are filled until the end of Oct. but apparently they haven't all been sent out.
- Rank applicant files on 1,2,3 scale and try to only interview 1's. Still haven't run out of 1's all the way to the end of October.
-Make acceptance choices in batches (every ~3 weeks worth of interviews). SO APPLY EARLY!!!

All and all, if I got no other interviews and only an acceptance there, I'd totally take it and be completely happy with it 🙂

And for those of you that have and will interview, I hope you really love it! I'm a week away from exams and I'm still smiling and in love with the school!

Open. Oh yea, something useful to know --> They give you a manilla folder at the beginning with the location of your interview and such, but included in that folder is an evaluation sheet that you are supposed to hand to your interviewer. It would be to your benefit to study it carefully haha.

Of course, some of it is common sense (i.e. doesn't go into medicine for financial gain blah blah). Also, it could just be a trick because they might use something completely different to evaluate you once you leave the room. 😀

To anybody who applied MD/MBA at Tech, does the MBA degree show up anywhere online?

I tried to get TMDSAS and Tech to change me to an MD/MBA applicant, but I noticed that Tech's status page only says "Medicine" under the degree part.
 
Quick question about the Southwest secondary application. On the part where you have to fill in the prerequisites...

BIOLOGY:Two years as required for science majors, one year with formal laboratory experiences (minimum of 14 semester credit hours, 8 hours with lab and 6 hours for remainder, or 12 lecture hours and 2 lab hours). One semester in biochemistry may count toward this requirement.

Well I got the two semesters of biology w/ lab and I got two semesters of biochemistry, but can I only put one of those semeseters to count for this? If that's the case I have a semester of microbiology, anatomy, physiology, and two semesters of different types of genetics could I count one of these instead?
 
Seems like they won't accept two semesters of biochem. So I'd put the two semesters of bio with lab and pick any additional two bio classes (all of the ones you've listed will count). You don't even need to mention biochem.

Thanks! I'm curious to see that sheet...I wonder if there is anything surprising that they are evaluating us on. Probably not though..at least if there were, it wouldn't be on that sheet.
 
I've heard a few folks post about letters of interest. Having not been in undergrad in [cough] quite a while, I'm not familiar with the concept. Is it simply a letter stating you are interested in that particular school over all others? I'm curious how that's viewed by the adcoms. If anyone has any thoughts on this I'd be interested in hearing them. Thanks.

Well there is a letter of intent and a letter of interest. An intent means you would attend the school if accepted. An interest is well...just that. I'm HIGHLY considering sending a letter of intent to UTHSCSA before Nov 15th rolls around...in fact, I've already started writing one. If by chance I do not get any more TX interviews this year, I would feel comfortable making the decision to send a letter of intent. As far as to how TX adcoms feel about them...I haven't a clue. But it couldn't hurt, could it?

Makes good sense to me. The paranoid in me wonders if a letter of intent to one school could possibly affect my chances at other schools? I can't imagine adcoms have the time or motivation to discuss these trivial things with other adcoms? I am really interested in this issue. If it makes sense, I will definitely send one out.
 
That sounds funny to me. I would hope that ad coms would not look at letters of intent. The lengthy application should be enough to prove your interest. What stinks is that I want to be competitive and now I feel like I have even more work to do. If no one sent a letter of intent no one would have to worry about it. What's next? A letter promising you'll sacrifice your first born child to the gods of medicine? I'm just frustrated because I work full-time in a hospital and I teach A&P at a university. I'm exhausted. Never-the-less, I'd better get started on my LOI to A&M...

I feel the same way.. tri-tasking takes its toll sometimes....in addition to the emotional hurdles of this process 👍👍:luck:
 
I don't think a LOI is a good idea. This isn't college football. I might ask my advisor though just out of curiosity.

If I were a dean, I would, and I am SURE many do look at them.

As a dean, I don't want to be used a safety school (I want applicants that WANT to go to my school, that makes better doctors.).
Someone may come to the school, interview, realize they hate it, and now what?? I assume that because they applied they are coming there???

A letter of intent may be the breaking point you need to get in. Or it may be the guarantee of a pre-match acceptance instead of a match, removing 2 months of stress.

I've applied to jobs with several hundred applicants. ANYTHING to let them know you are more than just casually wanting the position is a good thing.

There are people in this thread where letters of interest got them an immediate interview. The difference in your position on a waitlist may be an email.

Med school is a professional interview process and ought to be treated as such.
 
at georgetown they say that if you're waitlisted that you must submit a letter of interest to continue be evaluated for admission...i know thats not TX but I thought that was interesting/strange
 
so for a letter of interest, do people typically mail out a letter or just send via email? what do people include in a LOI... obviously why they want to come to the school, but is that pretty much it? is it just addressed to the admissions committee? also, would it be acceptable to send it out to a few of your top choices or is this generally just sent out to one?

sorry for all the questions. appreciate any responses.... i have never even thought of sending out a LOI until reading some of these posts.

me either. I think what I'm gonna do is send an LOI to A&M along with an additional LOR from an A&M alumini (my boss). That oughta put me ahead of the pack.
 
I think you guys may be overestimating the power of an intent letter.
 
so, i was processed on 6/20, but had to retake the mcat on aug 6th, after first taking it on may 31st. i checked my applicant profile on the tmdsas site, and it says that my mcat scores were received on 8/28...but i didn't receive them from aamc till 9/6! is this normal!? 😕
