Hi everyone,

I'm posting this as a way to blow off some steam regarding my TX match. I'm wondering how the match went for ther pre-meds . . .

I interviewed at 4 schools (UT-SW, A&M, UT-Houston, and Galveston) in mid-November and early December. My MCAT:29 GPA: 3.57 I go to an out-of-state private school . . . good amount of research and volunteer experience . . . decent interviews . . . I thought I would match somewhere, and I didn't!!!!!!

I really need some advice about where it was that I screwed up . . . . perhaps this can help others too who may be in my situation.

Does it matter that my application was late? (It was processed and released to the schools in early October)

When is the soonest that I can see if I am waitlisted anywhere (Monday, hopefully, eh?) What are the chances of wait-listed candidates getting in?

I mean should I think about taking the MCAT again?

I'm absolutely floored! What did I do wrong???? Help . . . .

You're not in bad shape at all... you have good, above average stats, and you interviewed at two of the best schools in the match.... that means you have the potential. I think that you should be confident about the waitlists... don't give up just yet. October is kind of late, but don't think about taking the MCAT again, a 29 is good enough. If for some stupid reason you don't get in off a waitlist, then don't shy away from applying again... just contact the schools and find out how you can improve your application. I know that sounds kind of cheesy, but it has worked for a lot of people. Good luck buttercup...

the exact same thing happened to me last year...I thought I was more than qualified to get in, interviewed at all TX schools (except tech and A&M..declined), and didn't match anywhere on Feb 1. It sucked, but in the first month of the summer, I ended up getting in to all schools off the waitist, so there really is hope there. Just send follow-up letters of interest to all schools, and totally kick ass this semester and send an updated transcript to them once grades are in.

Just a guess but since you went to an out of state school the med schools may not have been certain that you wanted to stay in state for med school. In your letters of intent to the schools be sure to mention that you really want to stay in TX. Best of luck

well, you're not alone

i interviewed at UTSA and TCOM this year....but alas no match. i guess i'll wait for the waitlist/rejection letters to come sometime within the next week?? after that, i'll see if i can go over my application with someone on the admissions committee to find out what i can improve for next year.

i really hate that i had no way of knowing the outcome (especially since sdn was down) until midnight rolled around and the school matched line remained blank.

the match went up at 12:01 AM like they said it would. as far as the waitlist stuff, i think the schools are supposed to have them all done by feb. 15.

i think they were posted around 10:45pm, a little earlier than expected. my sister called me up and let me know in the middle of a Coldplay concert (one of my fave bands). talk about a good night 😉

I'll add my non-match story to the list. 31 MCAT 3.6 GPA and interviews at Southwestern, Galveston, and Houston. I got alot of words of encouragement from Galveston and Houston both during my interviews and post, but no match, and I'm pretty confused. Waitlisted at Southwestern, so I'll guess I'll wallow for the next few months hoping for everyone to jump the Southwestern bandwagon for Baylor.

Texas ADCOMS require a great deal more from out of state applicants for admission. Your stats are average for a Texas resident or possibly just above average, but you have to remember that the legislature requires that 90% of the classes be made up of Texas residents. Baylor is the one exception.

I matched to a TX school (thank heavens!), but also got waitlisted at Southwestern (my top choice).

My question is how many get placed on the UTSW waitlist? Don't we have a really good chance seeing that a large portion of the class came from the waitlist in the chart posted above?

The maximum number on the alternate list would be 413. But they have to reject some people post interview right? Anyone know exact numbers? Assuming everyone is waitlisted, we have about a 166/413 = 40% chance of getting in (based on last years numbers). Even those odds aren't too bad!🙂

How do you know if you got waitlisted at a school? I matched at San Antonio, but Houston was my #1 (along with, what sounds like, everyone else's).

I'm in the same boat as Buttercup and whitesocksfan. I interviewed at UT Southwestern, Houston, and Galveston and was not matched anywhere. My stats are: MCAT 33P (P-12 , B-11, V-10), GPA 3.5, Major Bioengineering. I just found out from the Southwestern webpage that I'm waitlisted. Does anyone have any idea what went wrong? I thought that I would surely get in to one of these schools. (and yes, I'm a Texas resident)

I also applied to Baylor, but I haven't heard squat from them. I wasn't offered an interview yet, but when I called to check up on my status a week ago, they told me that my app was still "under review." Do I still have a chance to get an interview, or is it a lost cause?
Would writing a letter and sending updated transcripts help?

Does anyone have any idea how people are accepted from the wait lists? According to the UT-Gal web page they only take 10-20 from their list. Are the other UT schools similar?

At UTSW, they told us to check the website (they mailed us a password and username in our interview invities). For the person who inquired earlier, mine says: "alternate list" under application status.

I'm not totally sure, but don't waitlists only move as accepted students state that they're going elsewhere? I'm pretty sure a large portion of UTSW matriculants got in off the waitlist, otherwise why would they have accepted so many to fill so few spots?

I got my stats from an old thread that had a listing for alot of medical schools. You can find this thread here:

My assumption is that you take the difference between the number accepted and the number enrolled and you will get the number of people accepted off the waitlist. Or do the medical schools give out more acceptances than seats available knowing that some people will not attend their school?

Can someone explain how the whole wait list process works?

If I am matched at my number two choice and waitlisted at my number one, it's my understanding that if a spot opens at number one, I have the choice to stay at #2 or go to #1.

But I was also under the impression that you have two weeks to "accept" from your matched school after you receive a letter, and higher ranked schools have until June 1 to offer you a spot (upon which you have two weeks to let your current school know whether or not you are going to stay.)

If that's the case, am I supposed to "accept" at my matched school (#2) for now, and if I get in off the waitlist at #1 before June 1 to drop that acceptance from #2 so I can move to #1? I'm a little confused about how this ("must accept match by two weeks") works if it also means you can leave if you get off a waitlist. Thanks

You have two weeks to accept the spot you already have but you're not obligated to stay if you get another offer. If you pay a deposit to a school to keep your place then I think you lose your deposit if you accept another spot.

I just called UTH today asking about their waitlist. They already told me that I was on it, so I am assuming that means that they have their ranked list already. She also said that only about 5-6 people get off their waitlist. Does anyone know how many people they put on their lists?

Buttercup... once all of the schools have their waitlists together, send them a letter of intent. It is my understanding that they have a ranked waitlist, so the letter may help. I'm not too sure, but it couldn't possible hurt. Good luck and let us know how it goes... I'm rooting for you and all other fellow SDNers... you guys would make badass classmates, well for the most part. I matched into San Antonio and hope to see some of you there.

That number she gave you is wrong. Some years in the past UT-H has had less than 10 off the waitlist but in recent years the number has been closer to 30-40. There is hope so hang in there. Write a letter to Dr. Gunn expressing your intense interest in the school. Even better, set up a face-to-face meeting with him.

Last year southwestern accepted 330-340 people (don't recall the exact number) I don't know if this includes people who were withdrawn through the match though, but even then there is a lot of movement on southwestern's waitlist. This kaplan teacher i know was accepted on the last day texas schools could offer a spot (june 1st i think)

i know of someone that was accepted into soutwestern two weeks before classes started last year.

-june 1 is the deadline to accept an applicant who has already been accepted to another school

-those not accepted by another school can still be given a spot until classes start.

I contacted Southwestern and found out there are 120 seats in the waitlist, which eeked me out because the number seemed really low compared to historical numbers.

And by the way, June 30 (not June 1) is the last date this year for a TX school to offer a spot to previously matched TX student.

Exactly. They told me my approximate rank on the list (which quarter I'm in)

i contacted the office right after the match and they said that all they could tell me is i'm on the list...

i hope that's not a bad sign 🙁

Yes, you can call Southwestern and find out what quarter you are in on the waitlist. However, they wouldn't tell me how many got in last year off the list or how many they usually take.

They DID give me what quarter I'm in thought which was nice to know.

Hey guys,

I got into TCOM and I am very happy. I also am Waitlisted at TT. I contacted TT and they told me that they do not have a ranked list. They then sent me a letter saying that they will wait until April to start selecting people off the waiting list. I though "No ranked list. That is great because I can still do things to show them that I want to go there." I asked a couple more professors that I had classes with the last semester to write an LOR and now I am trying to write a letter to the Dean of aAdmissions. I am doing my best to tut my horn but it is really hard for me. How would your structure your letter? What should I say? I am just not a very good writer and everything sounds so lame.

I am not all that nervous. I have a place to go next year but I would like to go to TT so I am doing my best to get in. HELP!

For those on the waitlist...

There are a number of misconceptions regarding the waitlist I believe. I don't think the June 1st/30th (whichever it maybe) is THAT steadfast a rule. If you really want to go there next year, then make sure you let them know because I think they can keep you on their list. I was accepted at San Antonio last year (I'm out of state) and waitlisted 2nd tier at UTSW. I dropped San Antonio in May and was finally offered a spot here in July. Note that there are NOT 200 people in our class. There are ~230 people in the class. If you are out of state and waiting, keep your hopes up if you are in the top half of the list.

hey dynastar,

i believe that 2nd tier refers to the general ranked group that ut-sw has placed you in. there are 4 tiers or "quarters" that they rank you into. you can call and find out about your tier/quarter but not your specific ranking.
