Like any other TX school (and the 2 I'm waitlisted at), my guess is that they mailed out letters to inform people about their status (acceptance, waitlist). But you can always phone the admissions office to ask.Originally posted by vikvaz
Anyone hear from Galveston or UT-SA as to waitlist status? If yes, how did you find out? thanks

san antonio letters were supposedly sent out 2/10,& i still haven't gotten anything. i had expected to know my status by now, 2.5 weeks after the match. too bad they wont tell us over the phone.
vikvaz let me know when you hear something!

I'm also waitlisted 2nd tier. I hope they take the same amount this year off the waitlist at UTSW. I like my chances now that I heard they got into the 2nd tier last year. Also got waitlisted at Galveston.
Anyway, I got in Tech and U of Arkansas so at least I can relax!
Timequaker...
Did you talk to SW in May of last year? Did they give you any word on your chances at that time??

Well, I found today I'm in tier 1 of the SW waitlist. Do I have a pretty good chance of being accepted? THis whole process is very frustrating. I have yet to get accepted anywhere. My stats aren't steller, but I think they're good enough for the Texas schools: 33P (12 P, 11 B, 10 V), 3.5 GPA, Major BIOE, tons of research experience, some volunteer. I think I may have applied too late (late September, early October). I haven't heard a thing from Baylor (no interview, nothing). Do they just reject everyone at the end of the process? I would rather found out sooner than later. Although, the lady in the admissions office said my application was still "under review." I really don't want to go through this BS again.
Ricegeek- I'd say your chances at SW are pretty much a lock. According the, albeit, somewhat vague stats posted on this forum SW takes around 100 waitlisters and you're in the top 40, so you shoudn't have a problem. I'm waitlisted at SW, Houston, and Galveston (got my letter yesterday) so between alot of waitlist overlap and major SW movement I think everyone on the waitlists should be pretty optimistic.
What are my chances of getting off the waiting list a TT? From what I understand they don't have a ranking of their waitlist students and review all the applications again before giving a spot to someone on the waitlist. I wrote a letter telling them all my recent virtues (those that were not included on my app), I sent two more LOR's and a my most recent transcript. I just want them to know that I am really interested in going to their school.
Another question, how many letters should you send expressing that you are interested? I always heard that the squeeky wheel gets the oil but can you be too squeeky? They will be sending out the waitlist acceptances in April so will be probably making some decisions in March. Should I send them another letter in three weeks saying: "Hey, I still want to go there!"?

Did any one get rejected form SW (not put on the alternate list)? It concerns me that there are only 120 people on their alternate list since, in the past, they have taken so many students off the waitlist. I'm worried that this year they accepted a lot more people than in past years, thus the alternate list is smaller, thus there is a smaller probability that one will get off the alternate list. Does anyone have any insight?
Applegirl you might want to send a letter to your interviewers explaining the reasons you want to attend Tech and why you would be a good match. It's my guess that if the waitlist isn't ranked, the Adcom might meet to review the applicants and chances are that one of your interviewers is part of the Adcom. I think the school does rely on subjective qualifications (other than MCAT...) One of the current students talked about how her friend bombed the interview. She then wrote a letter to the Adcom explaining that she might not have done her best but that she was really interested in Tech blah, blah, blah and she got in!Good Luck and I hope you get in!

The UTSW waitlist has always been 120 with 4 quarters or tiers...nothing new this year. I'm not sure what the purpose of the quarters are though. I'm also not sure about the number of people pulled off the waitlist that some posters have been quoting lately. I seriously doubt that 75% of those who attend SW got in off the waitlist. There is no other school in Texas (or anywhere else that I have ever heard of) that has that kind of movement on their waitlist.
I know the number off the waitlist quoted is a calculation based on some source of published numbers but I am still very doubtful about the validity of the stats being tossed around this forum.
I think one reason SW's numbers may be inflated is if they include people who would have been accepted but were withdrawn through the match (I don't know that they do but it appears so). I found the numbers for SW out of the MSAR from another post (thanks brettp11)
University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center--Dallas Admissions
Total: 2,518 617 366 204 In state: 2,137 542 318 178
Out of state: 381 75 48 26 Women: 1,180 274 164 91
Minorities: 1,030 254 164 87 International: 20 4 3 2
Acceptance rate: 14.5%
so they accepted 366 and enrolled 204 (2002 entering class)
Baylor is the only other school in Texas with a lot of waitlist movement as their ratio between acceptances and seats is 2 to1.

EUREKA!
You've hit the nail on the head vivekap. SDNers have been assuming that the large difference between accepted and enrolled students is due to the waitlist - this assumption is flawed, and here is why:
I matched at UTMB, so I'll use them as a familiar example:
Galveston's approximate numbers from the same study were (if someone can find the exact figures for me that would be great):
Total: 2,400 900 600 200
BUT, their website has a FAQ where they explain: "usually 10-15 people are admitted off the waitlist every year"
THEREFORE, the total accepted is due to the TX match throwing out acceptees who matched at higher choices in the applicant pref list.
In sum, their is not as much hope for us UTSW waitlistees as we once thought.
I don't understand why SW would inflate the number of people they accept. To be ranked higher, they need a smaller acceptance rate. It seems that that type of inflation would be counterproductive to the "prestige" of the school in the context of outside ranking sources such as US News. SW competes with Baylor (which is not involved in the match--so students can get offers from both Baylor and SW) for many of the same students since Baylor must take a certain percentage of Texas residents. Thus, SW would need to accept more students from the match (366) than actually enroll (204) into the school. I don't really see any inflation there. As far as how many get off the waitlist, who knows. The accepted number includes the number of students accepted right off the bat + the number off the wiatlist. I'm still curious to see if anyone actually got rejected from SW because I am also skeptical to the number of students that have been reported to get off the waitlist. My bet is it's similar to the other Texas schools.
Additionally, I'm confused by the stats for Galveston. 2,400 students applied, 900 were interviewed, 600 were accepted BEFORE the match (the Dean stated this specifically) and 200 is the number of applicants they get after the match. It makes sense that 10-15 people would get off the wait list each year. I don't see any inflation in Galveston's numbers because they clearly indicate what numbers they are reporting. 600 = before the match, 200 = after the match. There are no such stats for SW. SW just offers total acceptance, and total enrollment.

I'll do my best to explain the situation. The "600" the dean at Galveston told you about is the number of those who interviewed who the adcom actually ranked on their match list. So if they interviewed 900 they actually gave the thumbs up to 600 (rejecting 300)...basically saying that those 600 were acceptable. However, they obviously don't get their top 200 students and so they rank up to the 600 they found "acceptable" after the interviews. They did not send letters of acceptance to 600 people before the match...only the 200 (give or take) that were matched to them. The same can be said for Dallas and the other TX schools. They "accept" many more than actually match to them. It makes sense that Galveston has to "accept" more students (600) to fill their class compared to Dallas (366). Those that are "accepted" by a school but not matched there and still do not have an acceptance or are waiting on that school to accept them (b/c they ranked this school higher than their current acceptance) will be considered for the waitlist. Each school knows about how many they need to keep on their waitlist to fill spots that come free.
Think about it this way...if Dallas really did have to take 166 people off a waitlist wouldn't that be a huge indicator that the match does not work?
I hope everyone understands. Sorry to bring somewhat negative news to those of you waiting to get into Dallas and other schools. Please ask questions if you guys are still confused.

Couldn't it be quite possible that they DO accept 366 people in the actual matching process? they easily lose that many people to otehr schools out of state and Baylor. I know for a fact last year in my conversations with Dr. Wright that they overaccept at Dallas. Good luck to all who are waiting.

Yes, they overaccept. Every school does. But they do not send out 366 acceptance letters...or 600 at Galveston. The number is as close to 200 as possible. The most I have heard of was 230 through the match.
I seriously doubt that Fah-!!. The number of students in the UTSW class this year is 230. While Galveston does not overaccept and has little reason to, UTSW probably loses half their acceptees to Baylor or out of state schools.
Personally I've always been amused at the MSAR numbers. Sometimes they are quite blatantly wrong. the 2002 copy blatantly misrepresented the number of out of state students taht they accept or even interview at Galveston.

You can doubt all you want. I'm not speculating or guessing here, I'm giving you the facts of the way the match works. I have served on an admissions committee and have first-hand knowledge. This isn't any kind of mystery or secret...call the schools in question ask them directly if you wish. I have no idea if the numbers being thrown around here are accurate but I will tell you that they are right in line with the numbers I saw when I was serving on the admissions committee in the past.
