Actually this is not entirely true, UTMB only has a slightly higher average USLME this past cycle according to my sources. I believe I was told UTMB step 1 average was 232 and A&M had 228 ( but dont quote me exactly). I just remember UTMB having only a couple points over A&M's average step score.

When I interviewed there they said that last year's average was 238 ? Or was that some other school :S :S :S ?

Can anyone weigh in on the advantages the Houston medical center gives uth students? I'm from San Antonio and really like uthscsa (particularly because of their 4-year md/mph program and I'm also not too sure of Houston's block scheduling), but I'm not sure whether to rank uth higher just because the medical center might provide more opportunities for better rotations, research, etc.

Thanks, and good luck to everyone trying to decide how to rank the schools!

I prematched to utmb and some others so here is my list if I did not prematch.

1. UTMB
2. TTL
3. UTH
4. UTSA
5. A&M
6. UTSW
7. TCOM

It's interesting to see ppl putting TCOM above other MD schools 😕

This is false....I was just at the 2nd campus tour in CS and the associate dean of admissions mentioned last years average step score for the school....it was not 224

Do you remember what number he said because the paper from the packet on interview day says 224. So, he either misspoke or they committed an error when printing the interview material.

Dont have my notes, but I remember Filo stating that the national average was 222 and that A&M increased its average to 228 this previous cycle. I'll double check on that later.

Piece of advice to everybody ranking today, a good friend in medical school told me that as far as ranking goes, pick the school with the location you'd be most happy in living in. Curriculum, faculty, facilities all play minor parts but the city you choose to attend medical school is a good chunk of your life (if you live to 100, thats 4% of your life). Of course location is a determining factor for everybody but according to my friend he said once you get into medical school, its the city that ultimately determines the health of your mental state, and therefore how well you are able to exceed in your studies. Hope that helps shed some light.

I've heard from several people, including one ROAD residency program director (family friend) that TCOM does an amazing job with its clinical training during years 3/4, better than many MD schools in the country. He says he often reserves a spot or two for TCOM grads because they are always top-notch clinically speaking (procedure skill, ability to assess pt's, etc.) and often go on to be some of his best residents. In Texas you will face very little discrimination for being a DO, especially a TCOM DO. Unfortunately that is probably not true everywhere outside of Texas, which is why I am not ranking TCOM very high even though I prematched there and loved my interview day. If I decide my top choice residency is somewhere in New England, I'd hate to have limited options because some PD over there has a stigma against DO grads. Just the way it is, sadly.

This is why I put TCOM over El Paso and Lubbock- location, family relocation/ employment for spouse etc it was a hard decision 🙂

And with that I am once again playing the waiting game....FEB. 1st come on!!!!!

Good luck to you all! I'm going to keep myself busy so that I'm not counting down the days. That means lots of Skyrim and SWTOR...

Utmb
utsa
utsw

I was sure about my decision untill Jan 10th at 5:01pm when I started to freak out! lol Hopefully it all works out.

Lol same here. Word to the wise, put AWAY all your interview folders and notes. I made the mistake of looking through all my stuff for a couple days after the rank deadline had passed. It made me second guess the ranking that I had submitted, haha. Just trust your gut that you ranked them right, because you can't do anything about it anymore. One way or another, most of us will end up matching somewhere on Feb. 1st. Bring it, match day!

I just ordered my transcripts. The address to send grades is listed on the front page of TMDSAS after you log in.

Do the grades have to be manually updated on the application itself?

Hey guys,

I have a question: do any of you know what time TMDSAS releases match info- is it a 12 o'clock midnight thing or a 6/8am thing or does it very form person to person?

Thanks in advance 😛

From last years posts I think you get match info from 12.01am. if anyone knows different I'd love to know...TMDSAS doesn't specify any time

Match Process

The regular match will be conducted on February 1 to confirm the pre-match offers applicants are holding and to fill the remaining slots for the medical schools. Individual match results will be posted on the TMDSAS application at 8:00 AM (CST) February 1.

WTH! I read that! How'd I miss the 8am part? Sorry.. was too busy thinking about whether I'd be staying up till midnight or setting an alarm.

Thanks for checking!

Not sure I know what is supposed to be so funny about that question

Your question was along the lines of "what are the chances of matching into the various schools." The answer is: nobody knows.

BUT, essentially, it doesn't matter. The schools do not see your ranking, so your chances of getting into a particular school are independent of where you rank them. E.g., your chances of being accepted by UTMB would be the same whether you ranked them first or last. The match only affects which acceptance you get to keep.

Therefore, even if you did know the answer to your question, there wouldn't really be anything you could do with that information. Perhaps that is why your question was funny to the previous poster.

To satisfy your curiosity, some clues are:
--Based on the School-Specific thread, El Paso sent out tons and tons of pre-matches this year. Thus, I would think that the chances of being accepted there (without a pre-match) would be fairly low.

--UTSA sent out an email to those who interviewed (but didn't pre-match), that they sent out only a few pre-matches this year. Therefore the chances of being accepted in the match there are relatively higher than normal, I would guess.

From last year's class-specific threads it looks like the match results were published soon after midnight CST on Feb 1. Does anyone know if the website said the same thing (8 AM) a year ago and they just released early or did it say 12 AM last year? Either way I'm going to be staying up till midnight next Tuesday and will not sleep well no matter what (either from excitement, disappointment, or anticipatory stress for 8 AM to arrive).

Haha! I know what you mean! My interpretation from the schools posts and the TMDSAS website was that the schools emailed acceptances at 12 but that TMDSAS still didn't go up till 8AM. However, I have been proven wrong on many occasion so take this with a pinch of salt....but yes either way I will still be up till 12, I don't think I could sleep 😀

I have heard 12am from med students who applied last year. I didn't specifically ask, but he made it seem like he found out on TMDSAS. We will find out for ourselves shortly. 😀

Do the schools know beforehand where applicants match or is it just as much of a surprise to them as it is to us on Feb 1st? I guess I'm confused whether or not multiple emails with acceptances will go out at midnight if an applicant is "accepted" to more than one school.

The whole point of the match is that you only get accepted to one school so they can fill spots.... which is why everyone ranks schools....

And to answer your question, the schools probably find out a few days before we do.

Last year I found out on the TMDSAS website at midnight. The schools find out the same time we do. Last year I remember schools started sending out "congrats" emails by 8-9 am until the end of the day.

Does anyone know roughly which Texas schools are more prematch heavy this year? From what I've heard and read (if anyone can confirm this), UTSW and UTMB gave out quite a few prematches, whereas UTH was fairly stingy with their prematches. Any word on the rest of the schools?

I was under the impression that UTMB didn't give out as many as normal. They only sent out one batch as opposed to the normal two or three.

They actually know who matched at their school in mid January lol... I know this because an admissions person told me that they have had the list for 2 weeks already! 😀 They will not tell you if you got matched with them or not though before Feb. 1st because it's against TMDSAS policy.

That's just cruel, and the schools have the nerve to ask us ethics questions.

Ugh, so my fate's already been deciding and the only reason I can't know the result is some arbitrary deadline.

That just makes it worse.

Ha, yeah... I guess they need a couple weeks to prepare?!? I don't know...

Wow. I had a dream last night where it was like 4 A.M. and I woke up (in my dream) thinking it was February 1st and I forgot to check TMDSAS. So I hurried to my phone to check my email, and I had like 20 new emails and they were all spam. Then I woke up in real life thinking it was February 1st and I quickly grabbed my phone and noticed I had no emails, and then I realized, wait... it's January 28th.

If I haven't been interviewed at any TMDSAS schools at this point, is it safe to assume that I've been rejected from all of them? lol.

Ha! Yeah I had a dream last night, too. I got an email from my #1 saying "In a few days we will have what we think will be very exciting news for you! 😉." And then there was a bunch of information about the school, sending a deposit, and filling out financial aid questionnaires. :sigh:... if only they could be that informal and chill.

Lol this weekend is feeling like the weekend before Nov. 15. Hopefully everyone will be very happy Late Tuesday/Early Wednesday!
