Sorry.. off topic for a sec here.

dookbloo : Your PM box is full! Please clear it up a bit or send me a PM because I haven't heard back from you in a couple days.

Okay. Back on topic. Congrats Holly! 😀

Thanks, y'all! I'm very excited.

Theresa, they sure are taking their sweet time getting back to you. I really hope that you hear soon.

Judging from the students I met, I would say that they are a brainy bunch of people and that they all want to do really well. They say there's no problem with people actually trying to sabotage fellow classmates, though. UTMB and UTSA seemed much more relaxed and spent more time talking about their social lives.

I'm torn between UTH and UTSW. I live in Houston now and the med center is primo (though not the traffic!). On the other hand, I'm thinking I want to do a subspecialty and maybe UTSW would give me a better leg up for that. I grew up in the Dallas area.

It's really tough to decide. One day I'm focused on the reputation/match list, another day I'm more worried about which city is better for my family... Guess I should be grateful to have choices! But do I? 'Cus maybe none of them will choose me! (time for more pepto!)

Theresa:laugh:

I don't think you can go wrong at either school. I'm a ms1 at SW and I love it. This school has as many opportunities as any other school but I wouldn't pick a school based on someone else's opinion (i.e. reputation). Just go where you think you will be able learn and be happy so be sure and check out the curriculums at each school (we're switching to organ based soon) as well as things like facilities (student centers, hospitals, etc)

so that's my opinion 😉

I know you're going to get into Baylor. I just don't know when they will call you. Trust me, I am always right about these things.

Here's pulling for ya.

Oh yeah, I told ya I wouldn't feel right celebrating my acceptance until you find out also. Well, a promise is a promise, and I have this bottle of relatively inexpensive champagne that I'll be popping any week now. 😉

yeah! gleevec is right on the ball. btw i predicted his acceptance (😉 well, not that that was very hard) and i had a good feeling about holly's and i predict yours as well theresa...the woman's intuition has never failed yet (ok except maybe in a few trivial, non-medical-school-acceptance related ways. ) it's just a stress test b/c you're so cheerful they wanted to make sure you could handle the agonies and mundane waiting involved in medicine. now that you've passed (as indicated by your good-hearted sincere and selfless posts) it's gonna be any day now. better take that cell phone off vibrate.

You and Spumoni are so sweet, sniff sniff 😳

I hope you are both right. If not, I still want to meet you guys at Two Rows next summer! 😉

It's been 2 months since my interview so I don't think I'll get a call before March. Maybe I'll get in when they do the big acceptance calls in the Spring. I'm prepared to get the wait list in March if it comes to that and I have plans for how to get my butt off that list ASAP!

One way or another I'll be a med student next year and I just can't go wrong in Texas. Ya'll know that! 😉

Theresa

Wow, you rock. 🙂 You're definitely going to get into Baylor. They'd be crazy if they failed to accept someone as good, as positive as you!

Gleevec and Spumoni, congratulations on your Baylor acceptances. You're both funny and nice folks, and it's heartening to see that Baylor had the sense to accept you. 🙂 It's a wonderful school an the TMC is just amazing.

I'd give a big 👍 to Two Rows...yum!

I just got accepted to Baylor! Thanks for putting up with me all this time.

Congratulations Holly!!!

I'm interviewing there today, so keep your fingers crossed that we'll be classmates next year! Baylor is by far my number one choice, so I'm a little nervous about this afternoon...

But I'm so happy for you! That call must have been great.

Okay guys, don't want to some off as too goody two shoes! I've been known to yell at my kids (this morning) and I even cussed once, by myself, in my pillow with the white lace that I hand stitched, no one heard me...

Seriously, I think we have a bunch of good people on this thread and I am happy to see everyone succeed. And as a last resort, I DO use my real first name so it'd suck to be a jerk on SDN and then get outed in med school! haha

If ya ever want to see me mad, ask me about LOR writers who bail 😡 or people who tell me they "could never abandon their children to go to med school." 😡 I've been known to be touchy about the "nontrads taking the place of younger students" thing, too. My husband says I'm so diplomatic people just don't know when I'm ticked.

You guys keep me sane in this ego-bruising process, thanks!
Theresa

Hey guys!

I'm not a Texan, but I have lived there, and my top choice is there, so I figured I could post here. 😀

I have kind of a pressing problem, and I thought I'd see what you guys think. You see, Baylor just became my top choice med school. Not only is it a great school, with cool people going there, but my wife just got an awesome job offer from ExxonMobil in Houston. The problem is that she has to accept or decline by December 15 (and this isn't like accepting a med school acceptance. Once you accept a job offer, you can't decline it later on). Baylor is the only school I applied to in Houston, and I haven't heard anything from them about an interview and I've been complete since August. In sum, I need either an acceptance or a rejection from Baylor by the end of December at the latest, or my wife will have to give up on this awesome job just because we haven't heard from Baylor. So what should I do?

Sometimes people get interviews at schools just because they'll be in town at the time, so I figured interviews are flexible that way and I called the admissions office. She said my application has been reviewed, and now I just wait. So I explained my problem and she said to e-mail the Dean of Admissions, Dr. Hill. So I e-mailed him on Wednesday, and I haven't heard back yet. Since this is a very time sensitive issue, I'm thinking of sending another e-mail or calling the office again, or something. But this whole time I'm feeling guilty for asking for special treatment, when there are tons of other people out there who want to go to Baylor, too. What do you guys think I should do?

man, this is a tough situation. you did exactly what i was going to tell you to do (i.e. call baylor and explain your situation etc.). at this point, i would not call them/email them further as it might seem too pushy. as long as they know the details, all you can really do is sit tight and hope they get back to you.

however, as someone who has worked professionally for a year or so, i can tell you that your wife should have no qualms about accepting the offer even if she's not 100% sure you will be in houston. it's awesome that she has a job at a well-reputed, stable company and unless she has other job offers pending, it's not wise to let this go. i know, i know, it doesn't seem "right" but in the world of business, you don't owe anyone loyalty (i mean, the company i worked for didn't think about family situations, length of employment or needs when they laid off 500 people, including some of my close friends, in a week, did they?). There is nothing wrong with hedging your bets. The question is, when does she have to start, and when does training begin? as long as it's after april 15 of next year, she should be safe to hold onto her offer.

I hope it works out for you, and I really hope Baylor gets back to you before she has to let them know. That would be the ideal situation. Good luck!

Thanks for the kind words, Evo. 🙂

Theresa, what do you mean you cussed into your pillow! *shakes finger* shame on you! you mean you're actually human? i thought you were little miss sunshine...you're not allowed to *gasp* get angry. getting angry at lor letter writers who let you down at the last minute or at people who openly display insensitivity and insult your career choices are hardly anything to get worked up about. have you tried meditation? anger management counseling?

j/k. you would be an amazing classmate, and i really am rooting for you to get in. 🙂

Hi sooner,
All I can say is keep calling. If I recall, your wife does have a deadline to accept the offer. Make sure the secretary knows the importance of this issue when you call. I might have Dean's phone number from when he called me still on my cell phone bill, Ill check it as soon as I get home (as well as my acceptance letter) to see if I can get your a direct number. If I dont pm you sometime tonight, pm me to remind me to look for it, since Im starting to lost track of things (its that time of the year). Im sure once you get through, they will be quite understanding.

Is anyone else finding it frustrating that you are accepted to a med school, but since you havent matriculated, you have no power to help anyone out? 🙁

You're welcome, Spumoni!

I sure hope that I get into UT-Houston's MD/PhD program....it'd be fun to have all of you cool people in the same medical center area... 😀

Sooner, I agree with Gleevec and Spumoni. As an old friend of mine once said, "I annoyed them so much that they had to let me in just to get me to shut up! In a nice way, of course."

Be politely persistent and see what shakes loose. If I understand it correctly, Baylor interviews for several more months? If so, then your interviewing early (like December) wouldn't necessarily put someone else "out of business," as it were.

The worst that can happen is nothing, right?

Just my two cents.

EvoDevo, I agree! Whether I'm at UTH or Baylor, I still want us all to meet at Two Rows.

Sooner, another member of the Two Rows club??? I agree, it's worth it to pursue your options. Just make as nice as you can and see if persistence helps. If your wife accepts the offer and then has to decline later, that's life. My husband has been in industry for years and endured a layoff and the threats of more of them for several years. The loyalty to employers and employees that used to exist just doesn't anymore. You guys do what's best for you. Better to accept the offer now and get an interview in Feb than to decline the job because you don't know and kick yourself later. In this job market, you have to look out for #1.

Holly!!! Your mailbox is full!!! Guess what, I already traded emails with the Dean you mentioned earlier this week. We'll see if it helps. I have a Baylor-grad friend (now ENT) who is gonna see what she can do as well.

Ms a., hope your interview went well!

haha don't let the freeways confuse you THAT much. dallas is a great town

wait, SW is my first choice...i mean, um, dallas sucks! go to san antonio!!

To Holly and Theresa,

What kind of stats do you think you need to have to get a shot at Baylor. Would they even look at someone w/ 30MCAT and 3.5 with a pretty good amount of clinical exp.? I know the avg. is 3.8 and 33 but I was just wondering what your opinions were.

Hi Gleevec!

IMHO, there are better deals around the medical center, depending on how far away one wants to live from the TMC.

Several of the complexes on Almeda road are pretty good (I recently moved out of one place that I'd lived in for two years), and a short bicycle ride away are places which can save you as $200 from the price listed at the link.

I'm not saying that Gleevec's place isn't wonderful - far from it! But depending on what you're looking for, I believe that there are places which offer more bang for the buck!

Just my two cents, and Gleevec/Spumoni - looks like ya'll chose well.

Cheers!

Evo

Im really looking for something along the light rail, since I plan on taking it in to TMC each day. So that sorta limited my options. Of the places I know along the light rail, Laneborough was the best deal I could get. I didnt want to have to deal with perimeter parking and taking the bus, i hear its a huge pain. Im so glad Houston got some sense and built a lightrail.

Umm, if I'm not mistaken...I know that place. And as far as taking the light rail in...probably a good idea on rainy days. the light rail goes up Fannin and will stop ~ 2 city block from Baylor. You'll still need to walk the rest of the way in. OTOH, you're like, I dunno, a three minute bike ride into Baylor.

wait, lemme map this....

yep, you're real close. Anyhoo, as one who's lived/worked in the TMC for two years, I'd say that a bike is the best bet most days if you live within something like 5 miles. It beats the traffic, you can go home when you want, and it's really fast. Only problem is that sometimes the heat can be a b!tch, and rainy days suck.
Anyway, I know the place and it's real nice. 🙂

Yeah, I have a couple friends at Rice who live there now, and a couple students I know who go/are going to Baylor who plan on living there. Id do the bike thing, but the streets arent exactly bike friendly, lots of stoplights esp. with the lightrail now, and yeah, the humidity blows. I think the bikeride to baylor is quite a bit longer than 3 min, almost 10 minutes in fact because of all the stopping you have to do while waiting for traffic to pass by.

But yeah, Ive worked in the med center (driving in each day from SL is a huge pain in the arse), and I definitely am going to look foward to taking the lightrail in each day. I would like a bike as well, but I just have a feeling the traffic + heat/humidity would kill me.

Cool. I know cycling in the TMC can be "challenging." A couple of years ago a friend of mine got run down by a trucker... 😡

Glad you'll be joining the fun in the TMC! Yay! Let's hope the town doesn't flood.... 😀

Cheers!

Ugghh sorry to hear about your friend. TMC traffic is supposed to be worse than Manhattan during rush hour, so I hope the light rail fixes a lot of this.

I think part of the light rail construction was building new drainage areas as well. Hopefully they will actually work this time.

From what I've heard (which could be wrong) the light rail is going to stop for something like a minute at each stop and only go 20 something mph. You may end up still taking it, but most likely it will be faster to walk, probably 20 min. Most kids in that complex walk instead of going over and using the red shuttle bus which is also right next door. Makes me think the walk isn't that long. The light rail sounds pretty inefficient for TMC use, and isn't it like a buck each way?

I've only heard people talking about MAYBE using it to go out in midtown, but even then people aren't so sure since it will be so slow.

wow, great input. thanks for the thoughts, and keep them coming...

i'll be the first to admit that i know NOTHING about living in houston, but it seems like it would be worth the extra trouble to take the light rail if it means avoiding this horrible parking situation/traffic that everyone is so vocal about. of course, i'm all for walking as well (i'm a wimp for biking though--i think i'd be too scared in that maze of traffic) but is this feasible given houston weather/non-pedestrian friendly streets? either way, it seems to make sense to live close by so either of those would be a good option. seaworth/evo, how do you guys usually get to school? are there any other apts you would recommend checking out in that area?

re lanesborough...it seems like a great complex overall w/reasonable prices. some other suggestions i had found--and would be happy to get all of your thoughts on this...living in the rice village w/other ppl in some of the older houses (apparently they are great deals and cheap, but i don't know about distance/ease of getting to the med school??)...the maroneal...and one more apt complex which i'll have to go look up.

in any case, it would be great to live as close to the med school as possible w/a low price. seems like the lanesborough is a near winner in this regard...

TMC traffic is supposed to be worse than Manhattan during rush hour, so I hope the light rail fixes a lot of this.

See, I keep hearing this, but I work in the tmc, and I don't think it's that bad at all. Yes, parking's expensive, but I don't think that the traffic is too terrible.

That said, living close and biking in makes a whole lot of sense. The Lanesborough isn't bad, neither is the Greenbriar. The Maroneal is also fine, although it has a different set up from either of the other two.

Living in the Rice Village might not be the way you want to go. Those houses are crazy old, and they have all of the problems that crazy old houses have. Also, they're really little and expensive. You probably could bike from them if you were motivated, but it is a little far and the streets between are not really biker friendly.

Hee -- I got in like 5 days ago. I am sooo not an expert at what you need.

The people who I know who have got in to Baylor all have pretty strong stats (i.e. Baylor's average or better). On the other hand, many of them have higher than Baylor's stats in one area (like a 38 MCAT or a 4.0 GPA), but average or lower (although still good) in another. I know one person who got in with a 30 and a 3.9, but he's a URM and also one of the smartest and most driven people I've ever met, with really a lot of impressive ECs.

I guess the way to look at it is that if all of your stats are lower than their average, it's probably kind of a long shot. On the other hand, if their average GPA is 3.8, they've got to take a couple of people with lower GPAs to balance the super-smarties with the 4.0s (you know who you are, people on this board). Same with the MCAT. Give it a shot and hope for the best, but have a backup plan, too.

Good luck!

I'm actually at the Maroneal (I personally couldn't handle the mirror wall at Lanesbourough and I wanted to live in a neighborhood w/trees, not in a sea of concrete) which is right next to the free blue shuttle which is how I get to school. Sometimes I walk when the weather is pretty and it is safe. I see (literally) a herd of kids walking from the Lanesborough every day. On the weekends students at Houston get free parking so I drive in.

For those who have families, a lot of people live in Pearland and park in one of the outer lots and take a free (red, white, or blue metro bus) shuttle in. It costs $55/month and the shuttles run like every 7-10 minutes during peak times. I know during your clinicals you will need to be able to drive in and at UT Houston you get subsidized parking for $70/month right in the medical center. Traffic never gets horrible in the morning, and really is only a bit bad at 5pm but they have cops come out and manually work the lights.

Many single and recently married people live in Lanesbourough and Greenbriar and UT University housing ($500 for one bedroom) but the most live in Archstone properties which have a shuttle in for $0.25 each way. Many live in the Braeswood Archstone. A little older, but cheap and big floor plans. I think this is the best bang for the buck personally, but I wanted something a bit newer.

The light rail really isn't going to make a difference in my opinion. It is SLOW, takes up a lane for traffic, and makes long stops. They should have elevated it and made it faster. I wouldn't be surrpised if taking the red shuttle from Lanesborough wouldn't be faster.

Ive worked in the med center, and I think the traffic is absolutely atrocious and definitely some of the worst Ive seen. I would prefer not to drive in it for morning or evening rush hour. The parking is even worse than the traffic, and not only is it hard to find, generally really far away from where you need to go, but its also expensive.

I would walk, but I have a feeling that most of the time, especially in the heat/humidity, I would prefer the light rail.

Also, I did look at the Maroneal and a few others, but I know a couple people at Lanesborough already and it looked pretty nice, so thats where I will likely be living next year.

Thanks for the info everyone!

wow, this is awesome information. seaworth, holly, and evo--thanks! i'm so psyched to be in houston with y'all next year. 😀

$70/month?!? wow. i guess i was spoiled here w/my $75/yr parking pass at college. anyway, i can see how the light rail might not be all that it's cracked up to be, esp since dallas had one installed when i was a jr in college w/a ton of fanfare but hardly anyone used it in the end (incl moi, but that's b/c i preferred to drive and the traffic here is bad, but isn't really all that bad). it's a shame b/c it would cut down on congestion and the system is really pretty nice looking all round.

if walking is something many students do, that's awesome. i'm a walker myself; i just thought the weather pretty much edged that option out in houston. but really, is the weather that bad, i.e. much more humid/hot than dallas (which i happen to think has pretty nice weather most of the time, excl july-september?) bummer that we have to drive for clinicals though...i was really hoping to avoid the maze of parking/traffic/congestion. apart from walking/apts, how do you guys really find living in houston...cost of living wise, entertainment, access to grocery/restaurants/all that good stuff...

i'm trying my hardest to get some time this dec to come down to houston to check out these apts in person (hopefully going to schedule it around one of those get-togethers 😀). right now though, i only am on the waitlist at the lanesborough...

also, to add to the list of apartments in houston, check out the amli off almeda. it is nicer, i think, than the lanesborough, and cheaper. it is ~2-3 miles from the med center, and is really close to the bus stop that runs into the med center.

I currently live in and around the Astrodome area and its just right down street from the Med Center, but most of the area is still in the "hood". However there are some apartments called The Broadmead and they are nice and its a straight shot to the TMC from Main Street

wow, this is awesome information. seaworth, holly, and evo--thanks! i'm so psyched to be in houston with y'all next year. 😀

$70/month?!? wow. i guess i was spoiled here w/my $75/yr parking pass at college. anyway, i can see how the light rail might not be all that it's cracked up to be, esp since dallas had one installed when i was a jr in college w/a ton of fanfare but hardly anyone used it in the end (incl moi, but that's b/c i preferred to drive and the traffic here is bad, but isn't really all that bad). it's a shame b/c it would cut down on congestion and the system is really pretty nice looking all round.

if walking is something many students do, that's awesome. i'm a walker myself; i just thought the weather pretty much edged that option out in houston. but really, is the weather that bad, i.e. much more humid/hot than dallas (which i happen to think has pretty nice weather most of the time, excl july-september?) bummer that we have to drive for clinicals though...i was really hoping to avoid the maze of parking/traffic/congestion. apart from walking/apts, how do you guys really find living in houston...cost of living wise, entertainment, access to grocery/restaurants/all that good stuff...

i'm trying my hardest to get some time this dec to come down to houston to check out these apts in person (hopefully going to schedule it around one of those get-togethers 😀). right now though, i only am on the waitlist at the lanesborough...
guess I should add in a place called Holly Hall, dirt cheap for the area and the AMLI Medical Center place was really nice.

the weather isn't that horrible. nothing you can't handle coming from Dallas, the weather is actually better in Houston than it is in New Orleans and Dallas can get pretty dang muggy from what I remember of my soccer days. but you're right, after September, things are MUCH better.

$70/month isn't that bad considering if you don't get the reduced rate it is $250/month. you should check w/Baylor, that is just the Houston deal. I would assume you guys also have free parking somewhere on the weekends but I can't really think of a lot like ours at Baylor, but I'm sure they have one somewhere

the reason you'll need to drive in for clinicals is because you'll be getting to the hospital before the sun comes up most of the time but not much of a problem from staying late. shuttles just don't run that early and it probably isn't as safe. don't worry, after about a month the med center is easy to navigate and I can always get parking right next to Houston (which means you will also be right next to Baylor) I drive in during tests at about 8am and I don't think it is bad at all. At the most takes me 5 more minutes than when I'm driving home at midnight. And yes, it probably takes me 10 minutes longer at 5pm than if there was no traffic, but traffic is much worse on 610 (or trying to get there which you won't need to do) and the absolute worse traffic of my life has got to be the Galleria at rush hour. it took me 45 min to go 4 blocks, I don't recommend it. 😉

Gleevec, are we talking about the same streets??? maybe you're just spoiled by Durham?

as for food and stuff, its everywhere. Houston has the highest number of restaurants/capita in the US. a bit more expensive than I was used to in New Orleans and San Antonio.

AMLI and Maroneal were the two other apartments I was really looking hard at. Maroneal is about as expensive as Lanesborough, as are the Greenbriar apartments. Archstone and AMLI are also of similar prices, but are a bit farther away. I think all are good apartments, but I know some people at Lanesborough and I like its proximity to the med center and the light rail. I have a feeling that even if it is slow, I might use it a lot to avoid the heat or rain.
Thats weird that I seem to have been the only one to have trouble getting into TMC in the mornings and at night. I seriously spent almost 15-20 minutes just trying to get out of TMC once I was on a major street (its worse in the evening than on the way in). This was at MD Anderson btw. Another summer I worked at Baylor/Methodist in the Diagnostic Clinic, and it took me about 20-30 min to get to 59. Of course, a lot of that had to do with construction on some of the streets, but still.

Well, I hope I am wrong about how big a pain traffic and parking is, or that something has changed (I havent worked in TMC in the last year and a half, but before that I worked there every summer). So hopefully things are better. Thanks for the info again!

Gleevec,

I don?t think that you are from ?Sugar land?... b/c the city is spelled all ONE word. Also, just the way you write about your apartment hunting and summer jobs at TMC sound like you only have family in Sugarland or Houston.

Correct me if I am wrong. Anyways, welcome to Houston .
