I don?t think that you are from ?Sugarland?... b/c the city is spelled all ONE word. Also, just the way you write about your apartment hunting and summer jobs at TMC sound like you only have family in Sugarland or Houston.

Correct me if I am wrong. Welcome is Houston anyways.

it is Sugar Land... Ive lived there for 18 years of my life. what the heck is this Sugarland (one word)?

Take a look: http://www.ci.sugar-land.tx.us/

I dont know where you got your misinformation from. I know sugarland is another city somewhere, but the Sugar Land in Fort Bend County, where I went to high school (Clements) is spelled with 2 words.

I dont see how me writing about apartment hunting or TMC makes it appear as if Im not from Sugar Land. Ive never had to shop for an apartment before, especially in the med center area. And while I am familiar with the TMC and certain buildings, I dont claim to be an expert on the area, just familiar based on having friends at Rice and having driven in from SL to goto work there over two summers. Ive been to several bars and restaurants here. People who dont live in SL or Houston dont know about Amy's or Star Pizza or some of the bars Ive named

Sheesh, I leave Houston after 18 years to goto undergrad and now all of a sudden people are accusing me of pretending to be from there? Has anyone in the history of the world pretended to be from TX? I doubt it. Crazy, anyway, Im headed home there in a couple days.

PS. TMDSAS girl, where you from anyway? Anyone from Houston would know that Sugar Land is two words. Also your post seems pretty rude/accusational, but whatever... its all good

LOL Where did that come from? And what is it all about?

He's right, its Sugar Land, TX... Clements is actually one of the best high schools academically, well compared to Dulles (j/k). Good school...

LOL, what school did you goto Tone2002? I think Dulles is pretty good actually. Most of the schools in FBISD are, though a lot of that is due to jerrymandering.

Thanks for the backup btw, this thread was getting all weird on me.

No problem!

I went to school in "Northwest Houston" also known as Bryan/College Station. LOL How bout them Vikings...

I've been in H-Town for the last couple of years, and Clements is the school in Fort Bend ISD from what I ascertained. Yep, but all of them are pretty good. I take that back, Willowridge needs a whole lot of work. Good bball team. I remember they knock us out of the playoffs a couple of years ago 😡 .

TJ Ford and Daniel Ewing were in the same backcourt at Willowridge. Absolutely dominant. They only lost one game while playing together-- against Clements

I second the two worded Sugar Land! I went to Kempner, which I've heard has become just a terrible place. Not that it was great before. 😉

Hey Gleevec, when did you graduate? I played club soccer with a bunch of girls from Clements, so maybe we know some people in common.

Still spray painted on the back road from Westfield is this poem,

Party Hardy, Rock-n-roll,
Drink a beer, smoke a bowl,
Sex is fun, Drugs are great,
We're the Class of '88

Good Lord, this is making me feel old......

Theresa, your thoughts?

Um, guys, I still haven't heard any word about an interview... App was processed (sent to schools) on the 12th of Nov. 🙁

Dont worry about it, your apps are likely to just be coming under review at the schools. So the delay has nothing to do with you as an applicant, but rather the fact that your submission date is more recent they have to get through earlier submitted apps before they get to yours.

I wouldnt start worrying until after a month has elapsed, personally.

Gleevec Ah, see, it must have been the 'we-speak' that threw me. 😉 sorry. I know that can hit a panic button some times.... and the application/interview process is probably one of the worst in the entire 'road to doctor'.

Megalofyia Chalk it up to late nights in L&D, bored but unable to sleep. 🙂

OrtoFixation They definately do. One of my closest friends is on the selection committee and I have spent many an hour talking about admissions with Dr. J. Of course, the process is also a little bit voodoo... If you or anyone else wants the gory details of how it works, just let me know and I will <strike>clog up the board</strike> post it.

ndi_amaka I ranked UTSW, UTSA, UTH, and UTMB and was accepted at Baylor.... final ranking was based on gut instinct and nothing more: UTSA, UTSW (family etc in dallas), UTMB, and UTH (I loathe the city of houston.) I knew a guy who fell into the Dallas is best in texas despite loving UTH. He was miserable all four years at SW. I would say, all the schools in texas are good. Go where you felt like you fit in best. Period. All else is moot. One of my students is a MS1 at UTSW and is very happy, its a good fit for him.

I have friends at/graduated from UTSW. They are very very very competitive. If you are more laid back, you might find it a not so good fit.

TheresaW specializing has nothing to do with where you go. Honestly. If you do well in any medical school and do well most importantly in third year, you can specialize. by the time you get to fellowship level (specialty) its more about residency. And Texas is deceptive... there is a whole country out there that is really unfamiliar with texas.

doctor Moo All out of staters pay non resident tuition. It is governed by the UT board of education in austin. However, compared to most places it is still cheap.

And because I don't want to feel too old, I will post my college graduation: 92 SMU. *g*

Sorry this is so long, but I was off for a few days and trying to catch up on real life. *g* and consolidate all my loans. *shudder*

I have heard from a few of you regarding questions, and if you have any, feel free to email me... there is not much to do on OB nights. sigh..... 3 more weeks till I am back home.

Gory details! Gory details!

Man, It's good to have someone like Roja around to add some solid substance to all this application smoke and mirrors.

Thanks Roja!

okay, sorry, I didn't have enough coffee today and there is absolutely nothing on tv....

So, in general, this is how the admissions/interview process goes... (with specific info from UTHSCSA):

Completed applications are randomly divided among the Selection comittee members (this is a subset of the admissions committee which includes te selection comittee and the all of those that actually interview..) The SCM (selection committee members) then take thier stack of applications back to thier office and read through each and every piece of information. In a bout a week, they all meet back up again and give thier general impression/summary and recommend if they think an interview has been offered. The ones that are recommended are then ranked in a priority.

So, now you have an interview. At UTHSCSA, the only information that the interviewees have are where you went to HS, college and personal statement. The interviewers are reqd to go to a training session where it is explained what is wanted from teh selection committee, mainly, Who are you? It is assumed that if you have been given an interview, the selection committee has deemed you academically capable of matriculating through medical school. Example questions are given out, as well as summaries of helpful 'essays' that are written by the interviewer. There is a strong emphasis on not listing resume information but giving personal stories that emphasize the qualities that are being searched for.

So, then you are interviewed. The interviewer writes up a summary of the interview and what the 'gut' feeling is... how would you rank the person, would you want to work with them, etc.

Then, both interview summaries go back to the selection committee where they are all gone over again, including your entire application. A huge part of the decision to rank, etc, is based on the evaluations of te interview. Other things become a little more important, like what makes a patient different from any other 'typical' pre med. Then a rank list is made and the match happens.

So, thats a nutshell of the ins and outs.

Now, having said all that, there are a few things to know. Wait listing is not a death sentence. I knew someone who is now a nuerosurgery resident who was accepted the day before the white coat ceremony (july). I knew another person who was a class officer who applied 3 times.

So, in med school, unlike residency, there is an element of randomness. One person on te selection comittee may not find you interesting, another phenomenally so.

Do not downplay things you have done in your life. I talked about schlocking beer at the gingerman. I talked about my career in film. You have to realize that your life experiences are not only valid, they will make you stand out alot.

And I can't remember what else I was going to say... I think I responded to everyone who sent me a PM. I mean it when I say, feel free.

Roja,

Must hear about the film background! I was a film major in college and worked on indies and features in Boston. What was your background?

I'd love to hear from a fellow film/med person. Aren't a whole lot of us out there...

Evodevo,
Feelin' downright decrepit... sorry my reply took so long...couldn't find my bifocals... 😉 Plano Senior High Class of '88!!! 😱

Roja, you have a good point there about there being a world outside of Texas. I'm at the stage where I'm over thinking things because I have too much time on my hands.

As ya'll can see from my HS grad. year, I'm a serious nontrad and it's making me a bit nervous. 'Sokay though. 😉

I like your mom, seaworthc! 😀 'preciate the compliment. We are all superheroes. This isn't easy for anyone.

okay, ya'll can have the thread back. I gotta get some sleep before my extended family descends on me tomorrow!

Hey Theresa... just wanted to say that I have nothin but admiration for you! I'm afraid of med school, afraid of having kids, and to think of being capable of both at the same time? Haha, hats off to you! 😀

I've got two sisters here... 21 and 13, oh boy, she just became a teenager... 😱

Yea for moms in med school! Theresa, I hope we both get into Baylor so we can show everyone how it's done! Of course, you'll be showing me how it's done, too, since I have far less experience at this motherhood thing than you, with just a 1-year old girl.

Hey Holly, how long after your interview were you accepted to Baylor?

Actually, anyone is welcome to answer this question. I'm sure that it's way too early for me to hear, considering I just interviewed last Friday, but I'm still getting antsy.

Elysium I graduated from with a degree in Cinema from SMU in 1992. I worked for 3.5 years in the industry, starting in post production and moving to freelance production. I did it all... commercials, indep films, tv shows, casting, you name it, it seemed like I did it. I finally stopped at AD'ing. Was finally fed up and hated the whole business. (working in it anyway.) and Im not a screenwriter so, I just stopped working and took some time off.

Indeed there are not many of us. There was a woman in my class who had an undergrad film degree, which she got while doing all her premed stuff, but she never worked in the industry.

TeresaW San Antonio was full of moms. There was a woman in my class who had her 5th child during second year. Had her 4th just before we started first year. She is an OB/gyn resident now at UH and is truly amazing. I had my kid during 3rd year. It is totally doable, if you end up at the right school. And I had a friend who started med school at 34 and as I calculate it, you are only 2 years older than me, you are fine!

EvoDevo Careful there... that was the year I was set to graduate from high school (skipped my senior year and went to college..... ) so that makes you my age.. And I don't carry a cane. most days... *g*

And because we seem to be rattling off siblings: 3 brothers: 24, 30, 36 step sister: 34 and a step brother that would have been 31.

And here is my 'old person' story from interviewing... When I interviewed for medical school, San antonio post the interviewees and thier graduating college... (mine was SMU) so on my interview day, a girl comes up to us all and ask who is from SMU. I raise my hand and she asked me when I graduated. I said 1992. She looked crestfallen and told me she was in high school then. Ack.

Okay, off to nap so I don't completely fall asleep tonight on OB. *yawn* maybe someone will actually deliver and give me something to do. *sigh*

Okay, hope I didn't come on too strong last night, guys! 😳

I was trying to cheer myself on as I have begun worrying about my age being a factor in this process. I'm impressed by the stats and EC's that a lot of you guys have and wonder if I'll be able to keep up.

Looking forward to having you as peers in med school. The Texas class of 2008 is going to be a force to be reckoned with!

Theresa

Roja can attest to this.

In May, a woman who lived in the back of my duplex for four years just graduated from UTHSCSA. She was in her early 50's.
At graduation, her DAUGHTER was the one who she was hooded by. Her daughter had graduated from medical school before she even started! She also has a daughter who is a lawyer. She is a phenomenal woman and someone who continues to encourage me as a non-traditional applicant. She also matched at one of the top (if not the top!) pediatric residencies in the country this year! Don't let anyone tell you you are too old or whatever!

Teresa, you have nothing to worry about! Neither do any of y'all!!! Be patient with yourselves and the entire process. It is all going to work itself out just fine.

SCOOOOOOOOOOOOORE!

I got an interview at Baylor! Woohoo!!!!!

Now I don't know whether it was because of my pestering them or if I was just going to get one anyways. Oh well, who cares?

Thanks, ms.a! I don't really mind that it wasn't a phone call. It was a personal letter with references to my application and I can keep looking at it and verifying that it's real!

I interviewed Sept. 5th. So yes, their admissions is truly a rolling process and even if you don't get accepted right away, it could happen at any time. Did your interview go well last week?
