SFAJess said:Thank you very much! That was extremely helpful! Do you know how to shadow a student? I don't think I would have another oppurtunity to go up there and I was thinking of doing this Friday which is the day before. Who do you contact and what would I need to wear? Thanks again!! 😀
I don't know who to contact. Last year they just gave you information where you can come up even after the interviews and before the rank to shadow if you would like. I didn't take up the opportunity because I had taken a tour my sophomore year with some students of my university during the week. As a first year, I can only say high things about UTSW. We are not competitive as people think. Our class averages are about 88 in biochem and anatomy so far. I thought when I was in your place, oh, that means the tests are easy. (You will get this everywhere you probably interview that the averages are high). The truth is everyone studies for them, and thus do well. If you don't study, you can't wing it like in undergrad on natural intelligence. Our class is really close. We have some fun with each other. (Don't even try to follow our class thread in the allopathic forum because we have a lot of inside jokes). We are close for a large class. Before our biochem test yesterday, they (Dr. Peterson) announced it was Johnny Wu's birthday. Actually a lot of my friends made t-shirts honoring the event. There are a lot interest groups and some have even formed this year. Like Bad Mojo's group B.I.G. that goes and eats Bar-B-Q every friday at lunch. (Stands for Bar-B-Q Interest Group, and there is actually a good showing of 20-30 students almost every week). Dr. Wagner and Dr. Parker are awesome. I know for a fact, or at least one of my friends told me because they were impressed, that Dr. Parker knows us each by first and last name. All 200+ people, so no you are not another number here. They also have M&M talks for us, letting us know that it is okay to have bad days and not make all A's. They show us charts where people in all quarters of the class, applied and got into harder residency programs. The carrels make us all reallly close, and we have developed friendships there studying. (Unfortunately, that is where I met my friends Bad Mojo & Jaboy). I really like it. Despite medical school in general being as hard as everyone says, I am glad I choose UTSW.
P.S. The parking is awesome , compared to some schools in larger cities. Not far to walk and the students and some staff have their own parking garage, so even if you come in late, you can still find parking.
