TEXAS Med Schools Entering Class *2005* Applicant Thread part 01

Hey guys, I just got back from Tech...man what a horrible trip 🙁

1) My flight was the morning after finals
2) After rushing to catch my flight, I realized I forgot my suit
3) My laptop crashed at the hotel, had to reformat
4) Walls were thin and someone next door snored all night
5) My second interview bombed, she crossed her arms and legs and stared at me most of the interview. I think she smiled like 3 times. She even asked if this was my first interview (cause she was making me so nervous) and she was surprised when I said no.

Also, I had a late Tech interview because they lost my fee in the mail, so I ended up paying $80 🙁

Sorry just venting

p.s. I hate Tech

Damn, I guess that won't be your number 1 match eh?

Oh yea and my phone went out of service and died. I thought it was kinda weird cause it was fully charged. I recharged it but it no longer works 🙁
Damn, dude. Sorry about that. The trip from Hell.

Wouldn't it be weird if you matched at Tech??

😱 I am so sorry to hear this--at least its over and done with! 👍

Just don't let your perceived performance affect your ranking (even though she asked if it was your first interview--you never know what they are thinking!), you have nothing to lose by ranking the schools based on which ones you liked the best.

Hang in there... 😎

Sorry to hear of your bad experience. I was there Friday as well and really enjoyed it. I had three great interviews and thought the facilities were terrific. I appreciated the noticable lack of traffic and congestion, much different than the metroplex. I also drove out on the loop through SW Lubbock to scope the area. Everything is very new out there and I saw every chain that DFW has.

The 6 hour drive each way was my only challenge.

Is it true that at UT-Houston, only one of your interviews counts toward your final assessment? I remember that when I interviewed there a while ago, one of my interviewers was taking notes and engaging me a lot more than the other. The other was just asking form questions and didn't write anything down (and it lasted all of 20 minutes). Anyone know the gritty details of what goes on post-interview, in terms of scoring/recommendation for acceptance?

Could be true, because my experience was almost identical. My first interview we talked about the Astros the entire time and the second one was like a VERY traditional interview...
What are you strengths, weaknesses? If you could have dinner with anyone?
And my second interview was the only one where the person took notes.

Plus UT - H interviews A LOT of people compared to the other UT schools. Sorry if that scares anyone (I'm in the same boat, I only have 2 interviews so far)...so you could imagine the interview having more weight there than other texas schools.

Hmmm...I sorta had a similar experience, though neither of my interviewers took notes. My first interviewer seemed a lot more "serious" and asked me a lot of typical and ethical questions. The second talked more about himself! However, both of my interviewers at UT-Houston told me that they would recommend me highly to the admissions committee, thus hinting at their involvement in the decision. So, I'm not sure about the one vs. two interviewer situation. And yes, UT-Houston interviews the most applicants out of the Texas schools....about 1200-1250. UT-San Antonio and UTMB come in second, interviewing approximately 900-1000 each. Keep in mind that UTSW, UTMB UTH, and UTSA also receive the most number of applications (about 2700-2800). A&M and Tech receive a little less, and therefore interview fewer applicants (duh!).

ifailedmcat--I'm sorry to hear about your experience at Tech. This is what happened to me in Lubbock: The hotel van that was supposed to bring me back from my interview broke down and was being repaired when I finished up my interviews. So, I had to wait about an hour before I got back to the hotel (good thing I didn't miss my flight back to Austin!). Not something terribly bad, but it made my experience a little worse than my other interview experiences.

not to take way from what truely sounds like a horrible day ifailedmcat had but i had the strangest thing happen after my tech interview. I was in the airport waiting to get back to austin. then as we were getting ready to board, one of the flight attendants told us that there was this guy on our plane who is going to propose to his fiance who was waiting for him in the terminal in austin. (this announcement by itself seemed to make all the females under the age of 25 who heard it go ahhhhh). then here was the kicker...the flight attendant then says, everyone on the flight was going to help him with the proposal by taking a rose that will be given to each one of us as we leave the plane in austin and handing it to her as we see her in the terminal. He was going to be the last guy to leave the plane, so after we all handed our roses to her, he would come out and propose. and the entire time during the flight, the pilots were raggin on this guy....saying "we have 32 minutes before we hit austin so if you want to change your mind.....let us know now." the flight attendants started singing.....i mean the experience from boarding on the plane to giving this girl the rose and watchign this dude propose really reminded of something that could've been in the movie Love Actually. she, of course, said yes. surreal indeed.

anywho, all the comments concerning ut-houston interview process.......i agree. my first houston interview was sooo intense. he took notes. the guy was like rapid fire asking me questions. dude even asked me about iraq. and that interview was my very first interview ever. the interview after that at houston was much more tame. I don't even think the interviewer took notes. but i'm now sort've glad that my very first interview was so rough because after that interview i would be really mentally focused going into any interview because i would be afraid that maybe i would get an interviewer like my first one again. have a good weekend everybody.

*edited*

This was a negative energy post...so I erased it. POSITIVE VIBES!

Man I want to go to UT - Houston. I'll trade a UT - San Antonio (maybe)admission for a UT - Houston admission come Feb. 1st.

When you start getting those other interviews, i wonder if your first sentence will still stand. 🙂

Though Houston is da bomb.

Wow, I have some real work ahead of me if I want to create something even close.

*bump*

I tried to create an online clock to countdown to Feb. 1st....but failed. Typical.

Imagine this board on Feburary 1st...that is going to be, as my screenwriting teacher says, "the ****"

One interview is open file, one is closed. Makes sense one will ask more about your app and the other will try to get a more general feel of who you are in whatever way they feel best.

After the interview, they write at least a 3 paragraph letter on your behalf to the interview committee.

I don't think this is true for everyone. Both of my interviewers had my PS in front of them, as well as my GPA from each semester.

I think that is true b/c when I was there my second interviewer had an emergency and the lady there told me that I had nothing to worry about because my first interviewer was the one on the ad com. She also did all of the writing and asked all of the regular interview questions.

I had a weird Tech experience, too! The shuttle took forever to pick us up from Tech...over an hour. We were so stressed we were going to miss our flight, but when we got there we found out our flight was delayed...only about an hour. We had a connecting flight in Dallas that was supposed to leave sometime around 9:00pm. However, we didn't leave until after midnight. This flight was going to Houston and I live 3 hours north of Houston. Luckily, the girl that went with me from SFA has a Grandma that lives in Humble. We got in late to her house, but at least we didn't have to drive back to Nacogdoches.

Hey Jess,

Would you mind giving a recap of your UTSW interview? I interview there fairly soon and would appreciate any insight. Thanks darling.

Both interviewers at UT-Houston had a manilla folder with a sheet that had my GPA and MCAT score in it. They both made a point to tell me that they were not on the admissions committee though. The first interviewer said that after the interview day that he would get a packet with a CD in it with the full application for each person he interviews.

Sometimes the trusty car is even faster than flying, as well as more economical. Flying is less of a drain on your body though.

Well the drive from Nac would have been 10 hours, but I would have much preferred that if I had known all that nonsense at the airport would take place. Oh well! At least it's over now!! 😀

Hey JDAD--I thought UTSW was great! I'm not that interested in benchtop research and I don't know anything about clinical research and yet they still appealed to me. The Bryan Williams M.D. Student Center is awesome. It's a rec center and a relaxation place. The whole campus, including the student center, just looks nicer than the other places so far. In the building we were at for most of the day (I think this is where they have class), they have lots of artwork that adds to the atmosphere.

Some other cool things: Their senior video clips were hilarious....I think you'll love the Britney Spears parody. The library lets you rent PDA's for a month. Everyone as a whole that represented the school was way more laid back than I thought they would be.....however, this did not include some of the interviewees. A lot of them were from ivy leagues and seemed like they had sticks up their rear-ends. Anyway, I got to see the carrels that everyone was referring to...when we got there, some med students were playing x-box games on the projector. 👍 Also, it was obviously some girls b-day, and her classmates had decorated her carrel with balloons, streamers and posters!! 🙂 I didn't get the impression that these people were a bunch of nerds that were super-competitive at all. I did get that impression from the people interviewing there, though.

They sort of have a traditional curriculum, but I don't know which I would prefer anyway. Sorry for the long post. That's all I can think of at the moment, but if you have specific questions, I can answer them!

Jess 🙂

Hey there,
I've got back-to-back, Wed/Thurs interviews at Tech and A&M next month. Ideally, I'd like to catch the direct flight from Lubbock to Austin, so I don't have to drive to College Station too late.
Does anyone know what time the day at Tech concludes?

There was a tour at the end of the day you can skip if you want to leave before 3 pm. It would be best to get a flight after 4pm to make sure you have ample time to get to the airport. Since Lubbock airport isn't that big, just make sure to get there 30 minutes ahead of time.

I got out around 4 PM. It depends on what time your interviews are scheduled at though.

Isn't that funny? You go there and the other interviewees are trying to psyche you out, and then you meet the students and wonder what happened to the psycho premed personae?

Tho, I guess it depends on what time of the testing cycle you're in when you visit. 🙂

Both the first and second years have a test on Monday and they were pretty cool still. Even those guys playing video games in the carrels....I guess it was a study break! 🙂

Thank you everyone for your kind words. If I do get into med school I really do hope I'm classmates with all of you. Med school will probably be a very tough and harrowing experience so I think I'm gonna need all the support I can get. I just got in big fight with my girlfriend last night, and she's not talking to me right now, but hopefully it will be resolved by tonight. I'm sorry about bringing down the upbeat tempo of this thread, so I'll post when I have some good news, hopefully soon 🙁.

hopefully your ut-sa interviewers didn't get that impression or you won't have an admission to trade 🙂

interviewers look for your interest in the school as well as all the other stuff they're evaluating - if you seem disinterested you may as well write off that app fee

1. keep it concise
2. write about anything that's changed since you submitted your app
3. new experiences, affiliations, CS, research, etc
4. express interest in the school and tell why
5. politely ask them to review your app and to consider you for an interview

Everything that lane said minus my new experiences....I didn't think about them when I wrote the letter; I explained more about WHY I was interested in the school. If all the EC stuff I listed on my primary and secondary weren't enough, then I guess I'll just have to deal with being sub-par. I thought my letter was pretty "nice"--I even had my dad read over it. Hopefully the letter didn't get lost or wasn't taken the wrong way, since I haven't heard anything from San Antonio. I wish you the best of luck in writing your letter....at the very least, I thought an LOI would grant the interested applicant an interview. However, I know that the schools have A LOT of applications, and it's not like I didn't receive interviews from a lot of other schools. I haven't really had to deal with a lot of rejection in the past, and this semester has been sorta tough on me (what a baby, huh?).

I agree with all of this, although a professional admissions advisor (one of those people that gets paid to get you into professional school) responded to a similar question on their website by saying that you should never *ask* to get an interview.

Asking for an interview is considered bad form, since the interviews are considered "by invitation only," and, supposedly, is a fast way to get the letter thrown out.

However, a friend of mine who wanted to go to Southwestern years ago (this was late 90s), called them up and asked for a "hand screen" of her application to see why she didn't get the interview. A good approximation of that would be to take Lane's advice & politely request a screen/ review of your application (minus asking for an interview).

And, more importantly *cite specific examples* of why you'd be a *good fit* for their school. It's the same thing you have to do during the interview anyways - you have to show you would fit in their program, and specific examples from your experiences can show that.

Aww, that's a very kind thing you wrote, even amid the craziness that seems to be going on in your life. Definitely likewise! As for Tech and MS stuff: well, everything happens for a reason. It's a great school & has a reputation for grilling their interviewees (one of my friends broke down crying during her interview), but you'll likely match in the best place for you.

As for your g/f stuff, well, yes, everything happens for a reason there too, but it's good you want to resolve it. Some unsolicited advice: many (not all) women don't talk to their S.O. simply because they WANT you to talk to them. Sounds crazy? Well, yes. Maybe we want the attention or, I don't know, but often we can say "we never want to talk to you again" when really we mean "We want you to ask us what's wrong, say you're sorry, and... jewelry would be nice. Yes, something shiny!" If you want it to work out, "I'm sorry" is the universal salutary for relationships. Even (especially) if it's not your fault. Good luck! 😍

Yeah, as one of my interviewers (who likes to go scuba diving) told me: "work hard, play hard!"

I agree with you, I looked around at the med students and was like "foosball? The have time to play foosball?!"

fotolith you are awesome! We just finished talking like 2 hours ago and everything is okay now. It turns out you were right, even though she said she didn't want to talk to me she really wanted me to call her all day. She said she missed me even though she was mad 😳.

Wow, I had no idea Tech had a reputation for grilling their interviewees. I actually feel a lot better now because everyone else told me their interviews were cake. My interviewer actually complimented on an interviewees suit and hugged her before they sat down! This was the person who went before me, so I thought she would be so nice, but as soon as we sat down she looked so hostile it unnerved me. I talked to my friend (an MS1 there), and it turns out that she is naturally like that. Man, I would be stoked if one of my interviewers hugged me before an interview 🙁.

I completely agree. I asked them to "reconsider my application," not "give me an interview." Honestly, I wish I could have received these LOI tips before writing the letter. How was I supposed to know what exactly to say?

Yeah, I wish I'd gotten the memo on this crazy process like, oh, I don't know, in the womb or something? Like, do these 3 things to get straight as, blast away your MCAT, avoid stress & have perfect relationships, all while improving yourself and your application/ ECs/ LORs...

bleh, actually, now that I think about, maybe all of this is just life's giant learning curve. It may give me hives just thinking about it, but it's all happened for a reason, right?

AsianDoc - we've all had those huge "I'm stressed out/ stop guilt tripping me for spending more time with my secondaries (or SDN) than with you/ when will this all end" (or something related) fights... it's a bummer, but you're not alone there. It would be nice just to hibernate until Feb. 1st. 😴

ifailedmcat: Congrats on being mature enough to work things out with your gf! Hey, count this as another notch on those communication skills you're supposed to be perfecting to become a physician. 🙂

Well, this info was from the last 2 years of interviews, so I wasn't aware that Tech had changed their recruitment tactics to include hugs. 😎 I guess that could really compound your sensitivity when the first interviewee gets all touchy feel, and you get the cold stare.

Last year they were reputed as the hardest interview, more than once I had to counsel a friend with "Oh, who cares about Tech... who wants to live in Waco?!" Usually the answer was "well, people who grew up in Waco want to live there." But I digress. As for my friend who broke down crying, well, her Tech interviewer had a personal vendetta, but my friend is perfectly happy at UTSW right now - so water under the bridge. ;-P

You know, though, it sounds counter intuitive, but it might have been better for your case to get the cold fish - provided you could impress her (which, I guess you won't know until Feb 1st). Seriously, if this person is the same for everyone, then it might carry more weight when she finds an applicant she's particularly impressed with.

Or she could be a man hater? Well, the possibility hasn't been ruled out. Eh, regardless, I'm sure you'll get a happy notice on Feb. 1st.

While Waco does suck (I've been to enough Bear football games to know that)...what sucks even more is Lubbock (where Tech is)

Yay! I just got an invitation to interview at UT Houston Dec 10th. I thought there would be no news this week. (august mcat)

Hey guess what!! I found out that I get to go to the UT vs. A&M game on Friday!!!! 😀 :horns: :horns: :horns:

I'm a Lumberjack at heart, but I'll be rooting for the Longhorns!!!

Sweet, I'll be there too. Are there even any ags on this thread? I think the Longhorns outnumber them by at least 10:1 here.
