Erm, are you a vegetarian? because unless you abstain from eating any animal products or by products, and never wear leather, I would say that your opinion is a little bit hypocritical.

The vast majority of hunters enjoy hunting and also eat the meat from the deer they kill.

Now, I am firmly comfortable with my hypocrisy. I don't like to hunt. (I do like target shooting though) However, I enjoy the fruits of my families love of hunting. mmmmm venison. quite yummy.

Many hunters also donate extra meat to programs like Hunters for the Hungry, which aides to not waste meat AND feed hungry people.

Vegetarian? No. I never said I did not believe in killing animals for food. In fact I admire the native american's ability demonstrate their respect for animals by both revering and hunting them. However, unlike today's "hunters" the native americans would use every part of the animal, ie meat for food, hide for clothing and shelter. This is very respectable. What I really have a problem with is hunting for "sport". Getting your rocks off by shooting some helpless animal from far away and displaying its head as a trophy. This to me is ludicrous. If you're going to hunt to eat cause you can't afford food otherwise or because that is an easier way of attaining it, then fine, I have no real problem with that. But if you're going shooting bambi to prove you're hot ****, then I do not respect that. That was my point.

I have no reason to shoot a rifle so i have not. I do not argue that it takes skill to be effective at using such a weapon. It is not so dissimilar to say, the bow and area back in medieval times. However, these weapons were designed to be just that, weapons to kill. I have no desire to be an assassin, so I do not have the skills associated with such, just as I have no desire to learn the skills that would make me effective at firing a weapon. I truly am trying to understand the mindset that makes this type of activity seem both pleasurable and acceptable. I did not say oh you are evil to want to fire a weapon, but I do not think it is right, nor do I really think this is the forum for such discussions. But, if you guys bring it up, then I will give my opinion and wish to know about it. As far as SFAJess and the dear population, I do not know much about that and in such a circumstance, I would say an organization should be developed to help address those issues, not have a bunch of random "hunters" go out and start firing at them.

If you're going to have these views in a Texas thread, then you need a wingman! I have to agree with most of what you have said--although I'm not sure I feel as *strongly* about it as you do. Guns are a mystery to me. They just seem so useless because positive outcomes rarely occur when they are involved. While probably necessary for defense in this day and age, I really don't see any other use for them. But to each their own--I'm sure I do a few things that piss other people off too.

As for the overpopulation of deer and other wildlife in some Texas areas--this is completely true. The numbers just get too big for the land to sustain them. So, these animals become malnurished and disease is rampant. While I don't necessarily think hunting is the best option to solve this problem, I can't think of any better substitute. This way, a healthy deer can be used for food instead of just wasting it. And rounding up a bunch of wild deer is next to impossible--so a hunting season gets the necessary manpower out there to actually make a dent in the population. While I would prefer for nature to take its course, I also don't want to see the animals suffer. I really waffle on this issue--but tend to support hunting in this situation (for lack of a better option).

Dude, climb down off your horse. 🙄

Personally, I don't hunt. But if I lived in areas where deer were overrunning everything (like Jess was saying) then I might.

Your comment, is typical of what I'll call "Liberal disdain" syndrome: sneering disdain of that which you don't understand, an air of moral superiority, and the need to lob insults ("compensating").

It is because people like RanderD, dizzydog, myself, and erlaza served in our armed forces throughout the history of America (and will continue to do so in the future) that you have the opportunity to have a nice, safe life. Read history, my friend. It is only very recently in the history of the world that the average citizen could live a life in complete ignorance of weapons and self defense, and not suffer the consequences to their life and livelihood. In some places (most of Africa, the ME) if you're not armed then you're roadkill.

People kill, my friend. It's a failing of the human condition. Better to have the very best weapons to defend yourself (or your family, country, the innocents of Bosnia, etc) than to end up as a statistic.

I must say, it is refreshing to see that this forum is becoming as contentious as some of the many others on SDN. It was getting too touchy feely there for a while.

I don't wish to get into the role of the US military and many others in the world, as I would contend it has been less about providing security to our citizenry and more about ensuring corporate profits and global domination of resources. But, looking just at weaponry.

A) do you really think this is the correct forum to discuss the newest guns being used to kill (keeping in mind that this site is designed to assist those of us that want to go into helping cure people).

B) defending yourself against enemies is very different than taking up arms in a time in which the vast majority of citizens (of our country) do not have a direct role in self defense. Therefore, if you and the other former soldiers wish to discuss the biggest and baddest guns (not being respectful of the killing power of the weapons but instead saying how "cool" they are), then perhaps that would be best discussed in another arena. Aren't you a moderator? How do these topics relate to medicine?

I'm not big on guns or the NRA (liberal disdain at its best, rare breed in Texas), but also being born and raised in Texas and having its culture surround you from Day 1, you kind just go ----> 🙄

Although, seriously, I must just stick this in......standing on top of a deer feeder and shooting down is totally not hunting. 😉

Happy Wednesday!

Has everyone had a cup of coffee yet?

Holy cow...a whole bottle? I'm a wuss...2 glasses and I'm fine. Cheap date  !

jdovez, no one was hurting you just by posting a few comments about guns. People post in here all the time about restaurants and stuff like that, not just medical stuff. Don't act surprised when people get pissed if you call them base, assassins, and killers just cuz they shoot guns every now and then. We could easily continue this argument and you would lose, but I agree that this is not the thread to talk about gun issues, so I won't talk about it anymore.

And runner, thanks for your opinion on things.

Erm, you automatically assumed because someone doesn't hunt like a native american in the 1800s that they are trying to compensate for a small penis (I'll pass this on to my stepmom, who is also a hunter)? Or that one has to be starving to enjoy eating deer?

Are you certain that *all* of hte chicken that produced the chicken breast you are eating was used? the feathers? the bones, the beak?

What about the cute little cow that gave you your steak or hamburger? Do you really think it was hunt down with a bow and arrow and then everything used to provide you with a hamburger?

I realize these are exaggerations. However, you are making incredibly hypocritical statements. You admire the indians for hunting with a bow and arrow and using all parts but you eat meat? Your going to fault people for hunting deer and eating the meat? Now, I personally, don't understand what there is to enjoy about sitting outside, freezing my arse off to kill a deer. But I do enjoy eating the venison that my family members end up with.

Your point is so ridiculously argued and steeped in hypocrisy, its hard to give *any* credence to anything you say regarding this matter.

Yeah, it's funny. Somebody tried to talk to me about the match yesterday, and I said, "Seriously, I decided not to worry about it. I gave my password to a friend, who will check for me, and he'll give me the good or bad news. I have other things to worry about than the match. So I don't. Worry, that is." 😀 Everyone around me thinks I'm nuts, or way too cool about it. I guess I'm supposed to be biting my nails or staring at the clock, sitting on the floor, knees to my chin, rocking back and forth........ 🙄

So how is biochem for you?

Well put Evo...

Everyone's back to being civil again, so I won't expand on this topic...But really JDovez, if you truly want to try to understand why people would talk about weapons I will pm you. (Hint: Its not because we are all murderous villians.)

RangerD, I went to ranger school after commissioning and jump school. Then I went to a regular light infantry unit, then to a spec ops command unit. But never in ranger Batt...

Now back to mid-morning pleasantries...True Blue, take over!
Ditto, jdoevez. I don't want to fight with you. I respect that you don't like or want to deal with firearms. But there are other perspectives in this world than yours. Please don't assume for others their reasons for liking said hobby. Just as I would never assume anything about you since I don't really know you. If you wanna know, just ask nicely and you may receive a nice reply in response. 🙂

Furthermore, if you don't like or aren't interested in a topic of conversation, then ignore it. You have that right and no one is forcing anyone else to pay attention to topics that you're not interested in. Okay?

True Blue, where are you???????

So, did anyone actually call UTSW and simply ask what the change meant? I would, but I am too afraid!

I'm good. Trying to do too many things @ once here in the lab. The busier I am the less worried about Monday night I am. 😀

Can you believe the weather today? Awesome! 👍

Hey guys, so I just figured something out! I didn't notice before, my on the UTSW status page, they have raised my GPA to correlate with my fall grades being added. This must be why it says application recieved, b/c they got my fall transcript (which obviously came from TMDSAS since they are the only ones I sent it to). NOW, it seems that if TMDSAS didn't send the updated fall grades of everyone who interviewed there, then maybe this is indicative of the match. SO, everyone who has application recieved should see if it has updated GPA, and anyone who doesn't have that should inform us as to whether or not they sent in their fall transcripts and whether or not they have been validated! I think asiandoc had interviewed still, and if my memory serves me she is both validated and has updated fall transcripts (both before I did) Anyone else?

Yes, I should probably try and multi-task (corporate lingo I think) to burn of some of this nervous energy (well, and lay off the coffee).

Haven't been outside yet but it looks pretty from window. Where do you work?

I think you are on to something! I sent summer transcripts (in nov or so) and they have recently been added to my GPA on TMDSAS - I didn't notice until now but they are now on my UTSW page as well! It has been updated.

Sheeesh..... Good Job noticing this!

Texas Medical Center.

........

Where do you work? In Houston?

Oaky, I have asked this before but like everyone else, I am as anxious as I have ever been. Does it seem that seconds seem to go slower then before or maybe I just noticed it. Anyway, my question is how low have people matched. Again I know I have asked this before and I even asked my advisor but havn't gotten a response yet. So how low, I mean I have realized that any school is better then no school but I would prefer my first or second choice, so have ya'll heard anything new.

I wanna blow of some steam now, someone asked me where I interviewed and for whatever reason I didn't wish to tell them and they knew that and yet they kept badgering me to tell and I still didn't. but then this person goes off and says I am this and that, bunch of negative things. Now I tell people I am cool with everything about interviews and how it went but for some reason I wish to not tell this person, so am I wrong or is the other person. btw, i didn't want to tell the other person because I just get a good vibe from them. so what do you guys thing.

oh, i also decided I am not gonna shave until I get my match results, hopeully this means a good thing.
