TEXAS Med Schools Entering Class *2005* Applicant Thread part 01

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I got my first interview invite today from UTSW as well with the same transmitted/interview dates as Steve. The odd thing is that I haven't even submitted the UTSW secondary or LORs yet. 😕

Yep, my friend who goes there said the same thing happened to her..she ended up not turning it in at all!!...you must have a strong MCAT/GPA!!

Congrats on the interview invitation, Steve! Would you mind sharing your stats?

Emily

Sure, my numerical stats are realtively strong. I have an overall 3.73 GPA and a science GPA of 3.86 (damn C in second semester calculus). My MCAT is a 36Q but the scores are a little skewed (PS 15, V 11, BS 10). I also heard that Southwestern automatically grants interviews to Texas residents who have greater than a 3.5 GPA and 31 MCAT.

3.5 GPA and 31 MCAT? I hope you're right, I would barely make the cut off 😀.

He's right. One of their deans came to UT and specifically told us those stats.

I'm feeling too lazy to look. Who's interviewed @ TCOM already?

Hey evo, I interviewed last Friday. Great time! I wouldn't mind going there at all.

Got my first: TCOM, early September.

You'll love TCOM. I spent all last semester and half the summer at the Health Science Center. 👍

By the way, I hit submit tonight. Secondary is almost done. It would be done, except it's too depressing listing "all the courses you've retaken and why" 🙄

Thanks for the kick in the butt, Evo. Tell me when you come to Fort Worth. I'll buy you a beer. 👍

I interviewed at TCOM on 8/3. Nice school, but I like A&M and UTMB better.

Okay guys,

I interviewed at UTMB yesterday, and must agree that the one word to describe the school is "relaxing." Galveston isn't too bad; some parts are ugly, but honestly, some parts of Houston and Dallas are ugly as well. The day was REALLY short compared to my other two interviews at TCOM and A&M....only lasted from 9-2. Had pastries and donuts for breakfast (eeek) and Mexican food for lunch (eeek again). Here are the pros and cons:

1. Short class days; students usually only go to school for 4 hours. This makes the quality of life at UTMB slightly better than at the other schools (i.e., you can have a life).
2. Board scores have been about 10 points above the national average for the past two years, and are supposed to be on the rise.
3. Only 6 weeks of gross anatomy lab! UTMB immerses you into gross anatomy by making you attend 5 days a week/3 hours a day. As the tour guide pointed out, you'll only stink for 6 weeks as opposed to a whole semester or year.
4. No shopping mall in Galveston; closest one is about 30 minutes away (Baybrook in Clear Lake).
5. Huge campus--it feels like another UT-Austin.

Anyway, these are the good and bad things that stood out to me. Attending these interviews has made me calm down about not having 6-7 interviews by now. I have already visited two schools that I will probably rank highly, and since each person can only attend one school, I figure that it wouldn't be the end of the world if I don't hear back from 1-2 schools. I think we all need to be more patient--it's only AUGUST! Some people don't even submit until October!!!

i'm glad you have realized this. it makes the process a lot easier to deal with.

Anyone else have a 2 Sept interview date @ TCOM?

Lab rat - A beer is definitely in order.

Everyone else:

Glad to see that everyone's calming down. Y'all may or may not realize this, but we are in waaaaaaaaay early for the TX schools. I mean, seriously. You would not believe the number of people who will apply later in the process. Any day now, we'll see someone asking: "So how much did you guys cut from your AMCAS essay to fit the TMDSAS limit?" And all of us will be like, 😱 !!

To reiterate: it ain't over till that fat chick sings, and right now she hasn't even thought about going in to the concert hall. 🙂

Of course, I'm still obssessively checking my email every ten minutes like everyone else (I'm not the only one, am I? :scared: )

Okay, good and bad about the night before. The food wasn't that great....it was only appetizers, and I came expecting dinner (where else do all those app fees go???). Overall, I had a good time talking to the med students. They were very friendly, and after talking to them, I felt "at home" in Galveston. I guess it helped that my boyfriend's best friend was there--I ended up going out with him and some of his friends for dinner. It's located at Yaga's, which is on the Strand, about 5 minutes away from the UTMB campus.

Another thing that I thought of: at lunch, I talked to the two ladies in charge of sending out the interview notices. I asked them if they screened based on GPA and MCAT only. They adamantly replied "NO! We look at a whole bunch of different things before we ask a candidate for an interview at UTMB." So, to those of you who thought that UTMB granted interviews based on numbers only, I stand to correct you. On another note, I can't say the same for Southwestern with their 31/3.5 automatic interview invites. If you hypothetically had a 35 MCAT and 4.0 GPA, would they grant you an interview even if you had committed a serious crime??? Sounds like they would....I was a little disappointed to hear this. Even though I have their "cutoff numbers," I still think it's kinda wrong to interview people without looking at ANYTHING else besides numbers....

Okay, I've been writing too much today....must take a break from SDN.

Thanks for the post!!!

I'm glad to hear about their screening process (thanks for taking one for the team!). I too am disappointed at the "numbers game" that some medical schools (a la UTH) practice. I hope that it is not entirely true and partly based on rumor? Probably not..... 🙁

I am preparing for my UTHSCSA interview on Monday and taking breaks to read SDN and watch olympics. Fun Saturday huh? I thought my Saturdays would be free post-MCAT! 😴

By the way, do you also have UTH on 8/27?

Speaking of UTH...the day was, well, LONG--at least for me. There was a lot of "sitting around time". Some people had their interviews at 9 and 11 and could basically leave after that. Others actually left for their UTMB interview afterwards (esp. if they were out-of-state). I think that I had one of the latest interviews and got stuck in rush hour traffic. Anyway, day starts early with speech from the dean...breakfast of muffins, bagels, coffee, and juice. Student panel came in afterwards to answer questions but they were 1st and 2nd years. The MSI had only started classes the week before so I don't think they were that much help. Scheduled tours at 10 and 11 if you didn't have interviews, but both of them were just of the medical school. My first interview was short (20 mins) and she only asked really boring questions off my application. I was worried about that since the doctor who came to speak to us at lunch told us that the adcom's decision after interviews is based on your LORs and the interviewer's recommendation (Word of Advice: if you get the same guy, ask him how the admissions process works and he'll give details...really helpful). What could she have to say about me in that short time (when 5 mins of that was me asking her questions)? *sigh* At least my second interview went well...even if it was a little unusual. He was super friendly, made a great impression on me, and promised to recommend me to the adcom (yay!). Anyway, there's one more scheduled time for tours and some conferences/activities that you can attend if you want after lunch. However, you are free to leave after your interviews. For me, I think that I still liked UTSA better than UTH...there's a different feel to the school and not much besides classes and labs the first year. The day basically goes from 8-4 the first year compared to UTMB's classes from 8-12 and PBL in the afternoon.

Well, that was more than I expected to write...Hope it was helpful at least.

I'm going to have to agree with Gutsy that UTH was a long day. But, I think the interview process will improve as the semester gets under way. Since last week was the first week of classes, I think they were just a bit disorganized on getting students to lead tours etc. I only hope for all those interviewing that the student panel gets a little better. After 10 minutes of them responding ad naseum to a "Parking in the Medical Center" question, I thought I was going to snap. What can you do, but sit there and listen.

I had one short (25 min.) interview where I got the standard "tell me about this.." questions. And I had another one that lasted much longer and was more conversational in nature. Word to the wise--make sure to wear comfy shoes because the interveiws are held in buildings all over the medical center and I know some people had to do a fair amount of walking to/from the medical school building.

Light Lunch [dripping sarcasm]:Chicken Fried Steak, Mashed Potatoes, succotash, and salad.

One thing that the dean of admissions did mention--that I thought I would pass on--is about the Match system. He basically suggested that we honestly rank the schools on how much we wish to attend them and not try to out-think the process. I know that it was important for me to hear that because I can see how one could convince themselves to change their rankings based on a perceived "bad" interview.

Oh, two more things. The students mentioned that there are two unique programs for MS1. First, about 30 or so students actually start there first semester courses a month early and get a head start on the material. The month ends in an exam that doesn't count. So, it provides a stress free opportunity to get a head start on the material and a chance to see the testing style! Also, for those students who have extenuating circumstances, the first year of medical school can be done in 2 years. I was really impressed with this along with UTH's seemingly strong commitmant to the whole person--by inviting spouses and offering a Balancing Medical School/Family Life seminar during the interview day to those who choose to attend.

All in all, I was impressed with the school and think the Texas Medical Center has so much to offer. I will definately be considering it as a top choice.

Yeah, runner makes a good point about the Match...there's really no reason for you NOT to rank your top choice--even if you think that you might not get in. You never know.

*sigh*

Finished secondary. Waiting for fin. aid to come in to send off fees, etc.

Good luck txguy! I'm in SA right now, but unfortunately not for an interview....I'm visiting my hometown! YAY! I can't wait to get back to school though so I can check my mail....probably by Thursday I'll return to Nac.

Also, I'll be calling UTSA tomorrow to see what happened to my LOR's from TMDSAS...I may not even have any interview invites in the mail when I return if they still haven't found them.

Well good luck to everybody with upcoming interviews! My first one is on 9/3...and I just got a hideous cold sore! Hopefully, it will be gone in 2 weeks. Although it usually isn't.

🙂

Good luck to all with interviews this upcoming week.

For all of you guys who've already submitted Baylor's supplemental application: What did you do about the formatting for the special experiences essay? Does anyone know how the adcoms will see it? In the printable version they use html which ignores whatever line breaks were made when we entered it. Should we go ahead and add some code to make the line breaks visible in the printable version?

I didn't have any problems with it and line breaks showed on mine.

Hey all...did y'all just get the email with the attached flier for the pre-interview social for UTH? Is anybody who has an interview on 9/3 planning on attending? I think I will be going since everybody says it is beneficial to go and to talk to the med students and meet the other interviewees.

Yes, just received it for my interview on 8/27. Haha I was just gonna post this, but you beat me to it, SFAJess =)

Oops! Sorry! 🙂

recieved first rejection (non-texas) from Vandy. bastards.

Yep, I just got the UTH email today too....I will see whoever will be there at the social on 8/26 (this Thursday)

I think my interview at UTSA today went ok 😳

My first interviewer was a pediatrician and was REALLY friendly. He only asked me one question ("so tell me about your background") and the rest turned into a nice conversation. However, my second interviewer was an MD/PhD and he really grilled me! I was asked almost every single hard question I saw on interview feedback!! So the take home message is to always be prepared, even if you hear that the interview will definitely be "laid back" and "conversational"

Everyone was right--the sudents and faculty there were very helpful and all seemed to genuinely enjoy being there. Random med students were asking me if I was lost and if I was ok! 👍 👍

Good luck everyone.

(still haven't heard back from Tech, A&M, or UTSW 🙁

well it was a long interview weekend and I am surprised my interview heels aren't flats by now. here's a quick run down of my thoughts (PM me if you want any advice for interviewing at these places 🙂 )

A&M: (thursday) this is a SUPER long day, so be prepared. Everyone was really nice and they walked you to your interviews which was very helpful (I wish some of the other schools were as helpful!). My first interviewer was a PhD and he was very laid back (i.e. no really hard questions). My second one was a med student and while her interview wasn't really stressful it was indepth (she had highlighted parts of my app and wanted explanations). Just be really familiar with everything you wrote down and you'll be fine. Overall A&M was awesome and (minus the drive to Temple) the day was well planned. By the way, be prepared for a not-so hot lunch at Temple. We had cold mexican food!

UTMB: (friday) I liked Galveston for some reasons and disliked it for others. Many of which have already been covered on this thread. My first interviewer was a lady in the student affairs office and throughout the interview it felt like she was trying to deter me from medical school, I felt like I had to continously reiterate my reasons for choosing this career. The second interviewer was very nice, although I was given the wrong office and had to wander around for awhile. All in all, I really liked the Galveston atmosphere, but I am not sure how I feel about the curriculum.

UTSA: (monday) I LOVED this school. Everyone was so nice and helpful. My interviewers were awesome! The only problem I had was that one of the interviewers asked where else I had interviewed and where I have received invites from. I don't know why but this question kind of worried me. What could he possibly want that information for? Overall, this day was great and UTSA has zoomed up to the top of my list. oh by the way- as someone else said be prepared for the more difficult questions. The interviews are laid back, but they still sneek in those tougher questions.

By the way, see all of you guys on Friday in Houston 🙂

Yay, I'm almost verified by TMDSAS... I have some info filled in on the page finally! Do they send out your app on Wednesday or Thursday??? I want some interviews already!

I'm glad your interviews went well, AggieGal!

Congrats Ylime on getting processed and congrats txguy and *aggiegal* on what sounds like good interviews!

Are y'all going to be posting your experiences on interviewfeedback.com as well?

Hehe, I have an aunt in Katy too. I grew up/live permanently in Sugar Land, about 15-20 minutes outside of Houston.

yeah, lucky for me she works 10 blocks from the med school so she is going to drop me off. No crazy parking for once!

I also had my UTSA interview on Monday and I thought it went relatively well. I enjoyed the panel discussion because I felt the students were very helpful with their answers. I interviewed with 1 MD and 1 4th yr. student. Bit of advice: if you have an interview with a 4th year try to go on their tour during the med school tour because you do a lot of talking with them while you are on tour and then during the interview they already know who you are. I ended up doing that and during my interview with her we just talked about different aspects of med school. 🙂 Other than that I felt the day went by real smoothly and everyone seemed open and honest. the only thing I would say is you spend so much time asking questions that during your interviews (at least I felt) that you were forced to ask some of the same questions over again just it would seem like you have questions. PM me if you want any more info or insight

Also an option if you have a med student: Eat lunch at their table. I ate lunch with my interviewer (we figured out that we are related!). I tried to go on her tour but we were sort of shuffled into groups after lunch. Anyways it was nice to go into that interview basically knowing her already.

If you get an MD/PhD at UTSA, do yourself a favor, and RUN!!! 😀

I really liked the panel as well--those 4 yrs were pretty entertaining. But, there were way too many aggies, and not enough longhorns!

Good luck all 👍 👍
