superdood: I don't agree with that snobby point of view.

Also, StartingLine: I agree with what Txguy said in response to your post about Harlingen. I would want to go there despite how boring it may be to the people that live there because 1) you are working one-on-one with the doc so you people tend to learn more because it is more personalized. Usually in rotations, you have the residents and interns as well and the med students are at the bottom of the totem pole, 2) More experience in health care (deliver more babies, etc.) and more experience with cross cultural differences and language, 3) I'm pretty sure they mentioned that you don't have to go on call while in Harlingen, although I might has misheard, and 4) the people that have done their 3rd year in Harlingen have been scoring better on the Step 2.

I know a lot of people wouldn't want to go b/c it would be an inconvenience, but personally it sounds like a great oppurtunity for me.
Are you SURE that we didn't meet, Jess??? I had some intense convos about Harlingen with some 4th years, and those are the very reasons why I wanna go there. 😀

No residents (or very few) in Harlingen = 👍 👍 👍

I think its the same as the situation for surgery rotations in Amarillo for students at Tech (no surgery residents up there).

considering the fact that i don't even go to school at either uth or baylor, i'm not biased. i'm just someone out of state looking in at the two schools, and that is the opinion i have formed

I see your points SFAJess and txguy. Harlingen is an excellent place to move if you are not into many social activities that are available in larger cities. The Rio Grande Valley is one of the, if not the, most medically underserved parts of the nation, there will be many opportunities for you to get involved. I am from Harlingen, but am currently attending school at UTPA in Edinburg. When I eventually become a doctor, I will deffinetly come back and work in the area. The valley is an excellent place to raise a family - I am hispanic and would like to raise my children in an environment where they are exposed to the culture and traditions. I had just mentioned Harlingen as a nothing happening town because many times, for the younger individuals, things can get boring.

Ok I see, so you formed your opinion after "hearing" that the students aren't too bright. Therefore you don't want to go to school there because you would rather be surrounded by "brighter" students 🙄

Soooooo, anyway.... Is anyone else already ready for Feb 1??? It kills me that we have four-plus months of waiting ahead of us. 👎

I can hardly stand the wait. Wish they would put the Texas system on a rolling basis until 15 January, at which date students can only hold one acceptance, and then do a match to fill the rest of the seats. Maybe, I'll get an acceptance from an out of state school this fall and I will at least know I am going to med school SOMEWHERE!

actually, i formed my opinions when people i knew went on interviews there. also, i would not want to go to school there but not because of the students but because of the city.

Anyone know anything about Fresh Start? I applied with this and even though I was told (after asking) that it would not make a difference as to how the schools perceived me, now I'm wondering if the med schools kinda slipped my app to the bottom to be considered later?!

TMDSAS told me that it would not make a difference b/c the whole reason the law was passed was to help people apply to professional schools. But that doesn't mean an adcom won't have a personal bias, ya know?

I'm just rambling here, cuz I have nothing better to do than to worry about this (well, I do have other things to do, but freaking out and trying to second guess complete strangers is sooo much more fun!!).

Although Houston is the armpit of america, it's awesome. I love living here-- I'm from Dallas and I think Houston is much more of a cultured city than Dallas or other Texas cities.

Agreed. Well, I'd actually like to have Houston's culture with Austin's climate/geography. 😀

Here's a new name for Houston: "The Greater Paved Swamp"

I'd agree with that. I'm in Dallas now and grew up here and while there are cultural things to do here I don't think that it is as abundant as it is in Houston. I love Houston but I'll always have a special place for Dallas.

Oh and I can do without the traffic in either city 🙂

By the way, Baylor is also in Houston 😀 👍

AGREED!!! 😎 I love Austin and wish there was a med school there.....UTMB's opportunity to do 3rd/4th year in Austin is very appealing!

The weather in Fort Worth is very nice as well and I'm guessing it's the same as Dallas 😛. Speaking of Houston weather, have you checked out the forecast lately? It's going to rain for the next 4 days 😱.

ya, i grew up in san francisco. i think that's why i think houston sux.

Are you planning on going to school anywhere in TX, do you have residency here? Cuz ya know hearing how much you think Houston sux is kinda pissing off this native Houstonian.

Dood, at least visit the school YOURSELF, before you form an opinion and broadcast it on the net. I've heard lot's of stuff about SF, but I'm smart enough to know that just cuz you hear one thing doesn't make it true.

Grow up a little bit and for god's sake at least be smart enough to keep those kinds of opinions to yourself if you are fortunate enough to get an interview to a TX school!

(And if you don't want to go to school here, what the hell are you doing on our thread?)

Sorry everyone, I can only handle so many "Houston sux" comments in one day.

Let's just ignore the "Dood who's obviously trolling. If you view the public profile of this user then you can put him on your "ignore" list. Voila!! No more annoying comments. 😀

Yay!! 😀 Texas rocks!!

Anyway, I'll be leaving for Galveston tomorrow. Does anybody know anything about the floods and if everything is A-Okay down there? My silly mom is freaking out and saying I shouldn't go or if I do go (which I am doing) then to drive VERY slow...maybe I will check out the weather channel. My mom is so silly...not go to an interview? I think they would cancel it and let us know if the weather was that bad....right?

Hehe, I think you'll be okay. My mom is soooooooo like that too. After the near-hurricane in New Orleans, she told me that I should reject my Tulane interview if I receive one.....hehehehe.

So, I'm leaving tomorrow for my interview at UT Houston on Friday... My first interview... I'm kinda nervous, I hope everything goes well... Any advice/comments from any interview veterans or anyone who has interviewed at UT Houston? Also, anyone else have an interview at UT Houston this Friday? If so, are you going to the night-before social?? It'd be nice to meet a fellow SDNer there...

Beware of the traffic in the morning around the TMC. I was surprised to see about 15 people who arrived late and scrambled for seats while interrupting the dean in the middle of his speech. Also, don't plan on eating at the social. Despite what the flier says, noone actually eats there, so if you're hungry grab something beforehand. There is also a chance of rain if you're interviewing this Friday so you might want to think about bringing an umbrella. UTH is a great school and I hope you enjoy your day. If you have any specific questions, feel free to pm me. Good Luck! 👍

any advice for interviewing at Baylor for those who have already been? im gonna be headin out there tommorow night.

L.O.V.E. the new avatar, jess!!! 😍

As for Houston, allow yourself plenty of extra time to find parking and get to where you need to go. Unless you're pretty knowledgable about the TMC, also allow yourself plenty of time to find your way. 🙂

If anyone gets lost, I will be in the TMC (where I work) on Friday and I can help out those who need directions or whatever. Let me know via PM if y'all need help.

Good luck guys!!!!

**EDIT: I meant, PM me and I will give y'all a way to contact me via phone. 😳 **

enjoy it. it was a fun day; prepare to be impressed.

if you interview with dr. phillips, just know that he's a real serious guy, but not mean. dont ramble on, be competant and realize that youve answered a question and stop talking for the sake of it.

my other interview was with a student (catherine something?), and she was reallly cool; shes a third year, into pediatrics, i think.

Hey Emily,
I had my first interview at A&M last week and it went much better than I had anticipated. Try to relax and just be yourself. IMO, it doesn't really matter what you say in the interview...as long as you come across as a relatively normal person who can carry on a conversation and communicate effectively.
I'll be up in Houston on Friday as well for the UT-Houston interview. I'm going to try to make it to the social, but I guess that depends on how bad traffic is between Austin and Houston.

Stephen

I'll be at the UTH interview and social this week. :>

I just wanted to vent my anger about the TMDSAS app process. I submitted my app in early Aug and by mid Sept, they decided I needed to submit a Residency Questionnaire 😱 . My father was in the military when I lived in El Paso, TX, but my parents purchased a house there. In accordance with the TX residency rules, for military people, establishing a domicile in TX constitutes one's residency in TX. Unfortunately, TMDSAS decided that they weren't going to hand me TX residency right away :meanie: . This is in addition to the fact that I have a TX Driver's License and am registered to vote in TX 😡 . It took them a little over a week to process my residency questionnaire, and they JUST processed and sent my apps to the TX med schools. I hope this doesn't kill my chances for interviews/competitiveness. 🙁

Don't worry, all of the schools that use TMDSAS are non-rolling so you are basically just as competitive as someone who submitted earlier. Just be sure and get those secondaries in. There's a little over a month left.

Similar situation... my spouse was a TX native and joined the military there. We've since moved from TX, to Korea, to NY, and now Germany. I sent in our drivers licenses, marriage cert, bank account info, voter's registration, and latest pay stubs. DNA and blood were not required! They processed everything very quickly and were very friendly. Oh yeah, and I was deemed worthy to claim TX residency! Yeah!

Hey everyone, sorry about the outburst last night, I'm just totally frustrated about not having any interviews yet and I had to take my baby girl for her 4 month check up and she not only had to have 3 shots, she has to have a couple of antibiotics for an ear infection. Luckily she only cried for a minute or so, but that was a long minute! I'm like a zombie, b/c she's still waking up once a night and while I love my husband to death, he works a lot harder than I do and sometimes I let him slack on the sharing of the duties but then that leaves me to do everything and it gets overwhelming. Now, I'm trying to imagine having to retake that damn evil MCAT for next year and cannot seem to find any enthusiasm for that joyful little task.

So with all that being said, I want to wish everyone good luck on their interviews this week!

waitwaitwait....

so all the schools under TMDSAS [7 of them] do NOT use rolling admission? So as long as I get my secondaries in by the deadline I should be ok, and all you interviewees aren't jacking my spot?

[j/k about jacking spots ya'll earned it]

you will be "okay" but you probably will not be able to reschedule any of your interviews in the event that something comes up

Anyone who has interviewed at UT-houston, could you give me any advice, or what the day was like. i am a nervous wreck who thinks i will screw it up somehow, and then apparently there might be crazy rain tommorow morning. any interview tips or advice.

Thanks

Congrats! That was my first interview too--TCOM is very laid back and provides a great introduction to the interview process.

You'll love their digital anatomy lab and human simulators 👍 👍

TCOM was my first interview as well and it was a nice, relaxing experience. 😎

Congrats!

Hey I have a few questions for everyone, I am interviewing at UTMB on 10/1, it is my first interview and I am sooooo nervous. It is my first time travelling alone too! I was curious if anyone has stayed in one of the frat houses there, how did it go? What was the night before like, did people not eat like the UTH one mentioned on this thread. How did you get around in Galveston? I am taking the Galveston Limo into town, but what about going to dinner and things, just walk? Thanks for any help!

I was seriously considering going to UT Houston until recently. I asked them a seemingly innocent question and they refused to answer...appearing defensive. I asked them what UT-Houston' s USMLE results were for the past year or two, as compared to the National Averages. (i.e. - % Pass and Avg Score)

Several schools have willingly volunteered this info, but UT-Houston was the only one that refused. Has anyone else encountered this with UT-Houston? It makes me wonder what they are trying to hide.

Or, has anyone been able to successfully find this information out from UT-Houston (someone in authority)? If so, please email me that info: [email protected]

Thanks!
