I htink I forgot a few things about my alma mater, but I don't feel like thinking today. In fact, I may go get my granny heating pad and read some... 🙂
Have a good night, O Wise and Revered One.

You are so silly.

oh hellz yeah. i didn't know the moderator was a longhorn advocate. feels like a warm blanket has been tossed on me. i thought the TX/OU banter would erupt in the oklahoma thread, i guess it started here.

i'll be up in dallas this weekend hoping our smug-ass runningback does his thing

I think that it is I who shall do the dancing. I just hope that Texas can at least put up a fight unlike the last couple of matches.

Congrats on the invites guys! 👍

I still have not heard from them, but I will continue to keep my fingers crossed... 😳

Does anybody know how long the UTMB night-before social lasts? I'm heading up to Galveston today but probably won't arrive until 7:30.

i arrived at the utmb social around 7:30 a couple of weeks ago. there were about 8-10 people still hanging out, but we all left within 30 minutes.

although i only had some short, surface level conversations, i thought it was worth the trip out since i had never visited downtown galveston.

I got two more interviews today! 🙂 Texas Tech and Texas A&M. I still need to confirm a date for Tech (I have to ask off work), and I will be in College Station on Oct. 21. Things are looking up for me this time around 👍 👍 👍 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Congrats UTKB! I was looking at your stats and am surprised that you are a re-app. What do you think went wrong last year? Did you submit late?

BTW, thanks for everyone's input vis a vis' the TAMU interview. I've decided to drive up the night before.

Rock on, everyone!!

Oh yeah...

OU is tex Sux. :horns:

I didn't submit late, in fact, I submitted earlier. Last year I didn't have any clinical experience (in college, anyway), had only 2 LORs, and I think I blew my interviews at the 3 schools I did get invited to. Oh well, this time I ROCK  ! Lol, sorry! I'm just so happy 😀.

I don't know if I'm remembering this correctly, but didn't you get accepted off the waitlist at Tech?

Yes, the Friday before classes started (Mon). Couldn't go on such short notice 🙁 .Bummer, eh? 👎 🙁 More pressure to get in this year 😱 :scared: !

congrats on all the interviews everyone!!!

I am still waiting on my TMDSAS application to be processed. Its been about a month now... <sigh> I can't wait until I begin receiving interview invites from the TX schools!!
I've been processed. It took about a month (submitted 8/23). I got a letter that said my app was sent to my schools, dated 9/29. Does anyone know how long it takes the schools to go through the app? 😕

Hey that's cool though, I think you have more of an advantage because you were accepted last year. In a way, you've already proven yourself, and this year you've gone the extra mile and you've strengthened your application.

If you look at the first post in the thread you might get some idea. Also, TAMU took six weeks.

Good luck, Rat! :luck:

How practical is this? I mean how many people could pack and move to Lubbock aka BFE in 3 days? That seems a bit unrealistic. Why do schools do this?

I know one of the schools you are looking for is TCOM, and they responded in a couple of weeks, by phone (so make sure to answer if its a random 817 number!)

UTH was the fastest to respond for me--about 1-1.5 weeks.

Like Evo said, you can find more info about stuff like method of contact on the first page of this thread.

Good luck!!

Yay!! I got an A&M interview!! 😀

Well it says for 10/21, but that's the day I'll be flying out to Lubbock for my Tech interview. Is it okay to tell them that? 😕

Yay Jess, congrats on the invite to A&M!! I hope you can reschedule.

yes. I had mine rescheduled for an earlier date. They're flexible.

Good morning Texas peeps! Happy Friday! For those of you heading out to Dallas for the Texas vs. OU game, be careful! 😳

🙁 Another chance to meet the elusive Jess hath passed me by.

*sobs*

Just kidding. Congrats!!

FYI: I was talking to a friend who'd been accepted to a school here in TX yesterday. He submitted his app early (like July/August) and was still receiving interviews as late as December. So for everyone who might be worried, it really isn't over until the fat lady is singing.

🙁 Well you just need to plan a Houston get together. I'm not so far away.... I could probably make it!

If we're lucky, we could end up in SA together! YAY!! 😀

Okay, so I said earlier that I wouldn't care if I never heard from UTHSCSA, butI think I'd really enjoy the opportunity to interview there. Like I've mentioned before, my dad attended school there (like a gazillion years ago), and one of my good friends is currently an MS1 there and loving it. I feel like I'm a well-rounded candidate, with both decently good numbers and a heckload of EC's, including work, honors, organizations, etc. Do you guys think that I should just let it go and see what happens, or shoot them an email about my status (I know its complete already)? I really don't want to be annoying, but then again, I feel like I have ties to the school and that it's worth a shot to find out what's going on.

Please no flaming. I already know how pathetic this sounds.

I think you should work on starting a med school in Austin. That's one school I'd be ubber excited about going to in Texas.

I don't think it could hurt to ask about your status. I would probably call instead of email....you may get lucky and be told that you have an interview already. That's what happened to me, Evo, and a few of my friends here at SFA.

I don't think they would consider it annoying...just be really friendly, which I'm sure you would do anyway.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!! :luck: :luck: :luck:

I saw something in the Austin Statesman or whatever it's called about that this summer. It mentioned its current links on UTMB and how they would like to propose a med school to be started there. However, it looked like it wouldn't happen before 2007-2010 or something like that.

Then I heard from my interviewer at SA that the Texas legislature refuses to open any more med schools. Supposedly we have too many docs....however, I thought there were still a lot of underserved areas.

I here ya Asiandoc. I haven't heard from them either (not sure if I ever will *sigh* ). You are obviously competitive from all the other interviews you have gotten, so hopefully you will get an invite. Giving them a call wouldn't hurt since it is a school you seem to be really interested in visiting.

Send a nice letter to Dr. David Jones (the Associate Dean of Admissions) if you really are interested in attending UTHSCSA. One of the things they look for in the interviews, though, is whether you'd be happy and 'fit in' at the school. They do a lot to sell the school to interviewees and they can tell whether you're genuinely interested or if your preference lies elsewhere. If you show up with a cavalier 'I-got-an-interview-everywhere-I-applied-and-I-don't-really-want-to-come-here' attitude you'd just be wasting someone else's spot. Just something to think about.

This sounds just like my situation. I've called and asked if I am complete, have they gotten my latest LOR, etc... I don't know what else to do though. Writing a nice letter to the Dr. Jones may be an option, I just have a complex about sounding like a suck up and wonder if it will do more harm than good. Indecision, indecision....

They could close a med school to open one in Austin. If they did it in the next year that would really rock.

Dude, the *entire* application process is about sucking up. You know? And if you really wanna go there, then the letter isn't so much about sucking up as helping yourself.

Jess, a Houston get-together sounds like a great idea. But perhaps in November? Thoughts? Anyone? Bueller??

....... just spoke with TT admissions office. They will send out the first round of invites late next week. Apparently, they are raising the bar this year and waiting for more "high end" applications to come in. The woman I spoke with said TT uses a scoring system that is primarily MCAT/GPA to select the first interview round. Max score is a 50 and 46+ will get 1st round (along with select, special 44's and 45's).

She was nice enough to share my score. 49! Good thing, considering this is the only school I'm applying to.

if you're honest and show genuine interest there's nothing wrong with kissing a little tail every now and then. just make sure to write about how much you love the school, not the dean 😀 it would also be a good opportunity to write about what you've been doing since you submitted your app - keep them up to date and make them aware of any pertinent experiences or ECs.

and kiss some ass.

and by the way, here's an explanation of UTHSCSA's invite system directly from the Dean of Admissions

"The Selection Subcommittee recommends about 1200 applicants for an interview. It is my responsibility to grade them from 1 (Highest) to 3 based on my knowledge of the quality of all the applications that are submitted. We invite 50-60 each week and if there are not enough 1's, we invite some of the 2's. Last year we invited none of the 3's and most of the 2's."

🙂

So, if you havent been invited, like me and a few other peeps who expressed their concerns, does this mean that you were rated lower and therefore probably wouldn't be accepted anyway? If thats the case, there's no real point in arguing for an interview, correct? Grrrrrrrrr....this is messing with my head, yo.

FW teaching hospital to close; 1,000 jobs lost

10:52 AM CDT on Friday, October 8, 2004

Associated Press

FORT WORTH ? The only osteopathic hospital in Texas is shutting down amid financial problems, leaving 1,000 people without jobs and more than 100 patients in limbo.

The Osteopathic Medical Center of Texas announced the closure Friday morning, and the 119 patients were starting to be moved, interim chief executive Justin Doheny said. The emergency room of the 265-bed hospital closed Friday morning.

The hospital, in Fort Worth since 1946, has traditionally emphasized osteopathic medicine, which treats patients as a whole instead of concentrating on specific symptoms.

Area hospitals are working to take in patients from the hospital, which was also is the primary teaching facility for the University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth.

The school won't be affected other than the fact interns and residents will need to go elsewhere. Of the 60 interns and residents, 48 have already found other places to go.

Tan Ly, was a first-year resident who arrived last week from Oklahoma City and was applying to be a resident.

"I had no idea. This is all new to me," said Ly, who plans to go back to his former hospital in Oklahoma.

The hospital has been having financial problems for the past few years. It defaulted on $82 million in bonds by failing to pay about $580,000 in payments due in August and September, Doheny said.

Texas Tech IS going to open a four year school in El Paso, so the Texas legislature can't be too much against new medical schools. It would make sense to say that the area around Austin has "too many doctors", but to say that of the state as a whole is a bit of a stretch. I believe their are 38 counties in Texas that are classified as medically underserved.

not necessarily - i got my invite in november and interviewed in december... and i'm now the class president. there are tons of people in my class who interviewed later in the cycle. notice that he said most of the 2s were interviewed - you may be a 2 but in order to get that interview you might need to show a little extra interest in the school and how you would fit what they're looking for so you don't end up being one of the few 2s left out. there are still ~8 dates remaining - that's another 400-480 people that'll interview. i wouldn't worry yet.
