Sorry I didnt mean to scare you and I didnt mean to be rub it in any-ones face that I finally got in. Its just that I found out today and I've been really excited. Yeah I did talk to adcoms...TAMU was probably the most helpful first time they simply said that my scores are not bad and that if I can improve my 29 mcat do it.and yeah maybe my science GPA was not so good..but their bottom line was that there simply are not enough spot for every qualified applicant and to try again. UTH said that if I want to be a doctor I will go to med school.
Like I said though it is a very random process.(my opinion only) I know classmates who got in with lower numbers than mine and those who didnt with higher numbers. Again I think the bottom line is to not give up and remember that in Texas they interview A LOT of people and interview does not equal acceptance. My cynical view of the interview process is that the purpose of the interview is to weed out the weirdos and for the rest of us average people it comes down to numbers and some luck! But I will tell you that I learned a lot through this whole process and I'm glad I experienced the downs because its gonna make med school so GREAT!

CONGRATS MAN!!

...I'm a first time applicant, but it really seems like everyone on this texas thread stresses numbers WAY too much. After interviewing at the TX schools the impression I'm getting is that these schools really all want well-rounded applicants. There's much, much more to an undergrad experience than one's numbers (well, at least at UT-Austin I know there's a million things to experience)...so before we all go getting scared (and this is what keeps me from getting scared)...why don't we just have faith in the system and just like Discover said...just remeber that if you want to become a doctor...you will.

good luck to everyone!

If y'all have seen my semi-hysterical posts elsewhere, please forgive me, I'm just a little stressed 🙂 I just had a question about interviews. So I applied to pretty much all the Texas schools and my application was in by the end of september but my recommendations didn't get in till mid-october. I haven't heard anything from any schools yet. When do you guys think is the latest I should wait for an interview before I start applying to schools in the Carribbean 🙂 I know that a lot of it has to do with my dismal gpa, I had a 3.0, but I had a pretty good mcat (36). Hopefully all the Texas people here can give me some kind of answer. Thanks guys.

Hrmmmm....I know that some of the last interview invites come around Dec. 1. Southwestern definitely has January interview dates; UTMB and UT-San Antonio do not; I'm not sure about the other Texas schools....Texas peeps, help me out....

I'd probably give it until December at the latest if I were you....

TTU invite by email 11/9 👍

Dates offered: 11/17 or 11/19 Lubbock, 12/1 (I think) El Paso

Def going to Lubbock, much closer to DFW.

Thanks eralza and asiandoc for the reponse. =) I booked Tech for 11/17 after consulting with my ms1 friend there.

UT-H 'til 1/5. As far as I'm aware, they still have 12/3, 12/10, 12/17, and 1/5 dates that they're still booking.
UTMB 'til 12/17. I'm not sure on the latest date they've starting filling but my complete guess is that 12/8, 12/10, 12/15, and 12/17 are currently available. (Of course with all of these the earlier dates could already be full...like 12/8 may already be booked)
Tech 'til 12/22 (someone posted some time ago on this thread that this was the last date. i have no idea otherwise...but they've only started booking 12/1)
UTSW likely only has 1/8 open if at all. (not sure)
UTHSCSA 'til mid-december
and not sure 'bout tamu or tcom.

I agree with asiandoc. Give it 'til perhaps the first week of December. I think that the tardiness of your complete application will be a larger culprit than your gpa if you don't get invites...b/c your mcat is completely coolmazingawesomeness and should balance it out. Congrats on the stellar score! 🙂

(Of course I know nothing 'bout the thought process of adcoms so feel free to ignore any/all of the above-mentioned. 😛 )

Congrats Ortho! Whichever date you choose, you're bound to run into an SDNer. 😀 My friend tells me it only takes him 4.5hrs to go from dfw to lubbock, while mapquest tells me it's 7hrs. 😱 I can only conclude that he's driving 100mph or something... :scared:

lol 4.5 hours?!?! Maybe in your Ferrari. Lots of cops out there in the boonies. See next Wed meads. Maybe I'll figure out who you are.

Congrats for having gotten in somewhere. Hi everybody, I'm basten0 and I'm a first time poster, long time reader of this forum I'm applying to schools right now and I've interviewed at Tech, Houston, Galveston, and A&M. I only applied to one out of state (Northwestern) but they've rejected me so its really just the texas schools. Still waiting to hear from San Antonio and Southwestern though I have a feeling that I am really just waiting for San Antonio. I think discover makes a good point about how in a way it is hard to gauge how well the interview went in terms of ultimately affecting whether or not you get in. There just seem to be many other factors that come into play in addition to the fact that you don't ultimately know for sure how the interviewer will rate you even if you get a "good feeling" about the interview.

Still, discover your story blows me away a bit. It is just hard for me to imagine getting that many interviews and then having to do the process two more times. Maybe I just don't want to think about it because my numbers are similar to yours. Still, I hope I will have the perseverance that you've shown no matter what happens.

are you sure you want to do IM or FP? if not, I would re-apply (with DO and MD) before going down south. seems like there is a lot of frustration from those who go carribean when trying to get residencies back in the US. I'm not an expert and could be wrong, but think twice before you make such a big decision, it will affect you more than you realize....

your GPA is low, but I think your very late application hurts you almost as much.

I agree with Seabass...in my opinion, you will be better off staying in the US. Good luck:luck:

I finally got my Tech issues resolved and they found my letter and told me my app will be complete by this afternoon. Thanks for all the support everyone. It's good to know that some of you all will hopefully be my future class mates next school year.

Anyone going to be in El Paso tonight for a tech interview tomorrow? Any recommendations on places to check out, good watering holes, etc? A Thursday night alone, is this what I have become?

Oh hells no, page 1 or bust

Thanks meads and UNT. I was counting on 5 to 5.5 hrs. It sucks that I'll have to work till 5. Maybe I can slip off early.

Best that I can tell, Tech accepts about 25% of interviewees (per US News).

Anybody in Lubbock on Friday 11/19, give me a shout.

latinfridley ==> Congrats on Baylor
Getting one in the bag sure makes you breath easier.

Welcome Basten0.

You guys should really take heed to what discover is saying. That there is more to the process than just numbers. That there is also a definate element of luck as well. There is a process going on that you will have absolutely no control over and honestly doesn't reflect that you are a horrid person or will be a terrible doctor.

There are so many variables in applying that you have to let go to a degree.

For those of you waiting, I would call the schools you are waiting on and check your status. Make sure your file is complete and that you aren't waiting on snail mail to get your invite.

Good luck!

Morning Texas people! It's cold, it's sunny, I've graduated from grad school, so dammit life is good. 👍

Of course, things would be better if Tech and Houston interviewed me, but I can't complain otherwise. 😀

It's cold here in Austin (I went running this morning and froze my ears off) but it's not sunny yet. Oh, and TGIF; the fun begins after I get home from work 🙄

2.5 months til the match....

Don't I know the feeling. 😉 But once Feb 1 rolls around, I'm sure that we'll all be saying to ourselves, "Man, I'm glad I didn't waste the money applying to more out of state schools." 😉

Hey I know someone who re-took the Aug MCAT last year(2003) and applied. His GPA was 3.0 and MCAT was 32.(He had a 26 earlier) He got waitlisted at UTSW, but then got an acceptance from Wake Forest. His pre-med advisory committee helped him on finding an approp. school after looking at his application. Do you have someone to guide you on finding one? Its not too late to apply to out-of-state schools, some have deadlines of Feb 1st. You have an excellent score, you should get in somehwere in the US. Stay away from the Carribean, I know several people who went there and had the hardest time passing the boards.
Just my thoughts. Good luck on the app process! 🙂

Asiandoc, 1 Feb will be here before you know it! The holiday season always speeds by.

I attempted to hedge the date of my first acceptance with out of state schools. Luckily it worked and I was accepted last week. But, I'm inclined to think that out of state schools are really hesitant to interview/accept Texas residents because the likelihood that:
a)we are going to be accepted in Texas and
b) choose to go there because it is so much cheaper and also have 2 very highly ranked schools.

So, even if you had applied to more schools you still may not have heard anything.

Evo--congrats on finishing up grad school.

Many many thanks to everyone who responded. It really helped calm my overly stressed pre-med self down. I called UTSA today, they were actually really nice to me 🙂 Yeah, the whole Carribbean thing was kind of a freak out response. I'm gonna give it a while. I've also applied to some out of state schools. We'll see how it goes. Congratulations to everybody who's gotten an interview!

Yes, I must admit that this is so true! I know very competitive applicants who applied to some of the ivys and have heard nothing. They discriminate against us Texan folks. Oh well, I received some outta state love, so I'm very happy with that. BTW, where did you get accepted out of state?

Drexel. I was pleasantly surprised with the school--and their quick response!

Now that I;m in *somewhere*, I really can quit my job and use the world as my playground!!!

Anyoone hear anything from San Antonio or Galveston this week? I'm getting really anxious now that the last interview dates are 4 weeks away!

As of today I'm officially giving up on my beloved Texas schools. The irritation, anxious waiting, endless phonecalls, and the blister on my index finger have prompted me to quit worrying about getting any more interviews from any TX schools, b/c it's not happening. (I did get a TCOM interview) So bye bye thread. It's a harsh and cruel process. I will go weep now in my corner. Thank you. +pissed+

What do you guys think about UT-Galveston. How does it compare to Houston and the other schools. Also, I am not a TX resident, do they accept a lot of out of state applicants?

UTMB, aka "Galvatraz," is Texas' own "off shore medical college." 🙂 Years ago they were known as the party med school (and hey, their interview invites still come with info on their frats, so they are not far from their roots), but in the last few years they've been trying to build up a good ole boy network again. 🙁

You get a fabulous education there, tho you can't leave the island when you're on call (in case of a storm), it's got top-rated facilities/ faculty, and nearly ever frat has copies of old tests to help you study. Not to mention I got friends from there who are interviewing for some competitive residencies right now, so it doesn't hurt your chances after med school. Last 3 years I knew some top applicants who were accepted, and other top applicants who couldn't get in (kinda a craps shoot).

As of right now, I like the UT Houston students better. Last night I went to a pre-interview social and got some great advice from MS1/ MS2s. Remarkably, they seemed mostly normal, were really willing to help, and a few of them were not so perfect in terms of numbers/ number of times it took them to get in (hey, makes me feel like I got a good shot with my quirky applications 🙂 ). Don't know how they fair in the match, tho, probably pretty good.

Both curriculums are similar, and you're going to find the same types of people wherever you go, so, for instance, I'm going to rank them based on my own personal preferences and less on where I think other people want to go.

And since they typically don't accept more than 10% of the class from out of state, they don't interview many ppl from out of Texas (except "outstanding applicants" according to MSAR, etc).

Good luck! :luck:

Sorry about that. Don't feel bad, last year I had 0 for 8 in Texas. 2 for 7 this year and still have some time left, plus an out of state acceptance. Just keep your head up and yield to the randomness of the process.

Good for you Evo!! I remember finally reaching the end of the tunnel, being bathed in the warm light. What a feeling of accomplishment and weight lifted. Way to go! 😎

So I have a question about the match. Let's say you have two schools to simplify things. Your acceptable to one (school A) but wait list material at the other (school B). Then you rank them, putting #1=B and then #2=A.

Obviously, you don't immediately match at B, but could later if a spot opens and your near the top of the list. Assuming the seats did not fill with people ranking school A as their first choice, then you made it into A.

Here is the real question: If all seats were filled by people ranking school A as their first choice and you ranked it second, would you be out in the cold?

I've heard people say don't try to second guess the match. Any insight here?

Yeah, Galveston has been active this week with interview invitations for late applicants/ August MCATers.

Actually from what I understand there is no way to "beat" the match. In your example, you would match to school "A" because they want you. If you were later accepted to school "B" off the wait list your slot would open up for someone in school "A." If you had ranked school "B" second then you would not even be considered for it because you matched at a higher school on your list. Simply put, the match places you in the highest school on your list that accepts you, your rankings of the school does not affect the results. This is probably confusing, but hopefully you get the idea... 😕

I got my UTMB invite today for 12/8. (August MCATer) There are still spaces available people - don't give up hope quite yet. 🙂

I am only confused about selection of a school that has accepted you but has all of their seats filled. In this case, putting them down lower on your rank list would decrease your chances of gaining a seat . . . right?

The folks at TCOM were talking to us about how the match functioned and I thought about how it could go awry.

From what I understand thats not the case. I think redrocks has it right. Lets work off your example (school B first choice, waitlisted; school A second choice accepted). In your example, school A does not wait to give you a spot until they see if they have filled all their spots with people they accepted and who also had school A as their first choice, i.e. you have just as much of a right to a spot from school A as someone who chose it as their first choice and also got accepted (assuming you don't ultimately get accepted by school B).

i'm pretty much repeating what redrocks said. putting a school down lower DOES NOT decrease your chances of gaining a seat.

oh also thanks for the welcome by UTKB and roja. you kids are neat. 😀

Thanks for the clarification basten0. It must be how the schools rank their acceptances that makes the difference with no bearing on where you rank them.

Hey everyone. Got back from my Tech interview in El Paso last night. The mountains in El Paso were very perty. Everyone told me that El Paso was way cooler than Lubbock! 👍 They have been constructing new buildings for their 4 yr med school and are hiring faculty (not like that helps us). :meanie:

Hi,

Have any of y'all tried, or even better, had success changing the date of your UTMB interview? In the letter it says (in bold type) that they do not routinely reschedule interviews, but I really -need- to. I have 3 interviews that week (which is also the last week of school--lots of papers and exams), and this particular interview falls on the day of an exam. Any suggestions?

It would be wise to move your exam date to an earlier or a later date. I think most professors would understand that. If you do get your interview date rescheduled, what if the time is in conflict with your other schedule again? After all, IMHO, talking to one professor is easier than contacting the medical school.
