UTMB, aka "Galvatraz," is Texas' own "off shore medical college."
🙂 Years ago they were known as the party med school (and hey, their interview invites still come with info on their frats, so they are not far from their roots), but in the last few years they've been trying to build up a good ole boy network again.

You get a fabulous education there, tho you can't leave the island when you're on call (in case of a storm), it's got top-rated facilities/ faculty, and nearly ever frat has copies of old tests to help you study. Not to mention I got friends from there who are interviewing for some competitive residencies right now, so it doesn't hurt your chances after med school. Last 3 years I knew some top applicants who were accepted, and other top applicants who couldn't get in (kinda a craps shoot).
As of right now, I like the UT Houston students better. Last night I went to a pre-interview social and got some great advice from MS1/ MS2s. Remarkably, they seemed mostly normal, were really willing to help, and a few of them were not so perfect in terms of numbers/ number of times it took them to get in (hey, makes me feel like I got a good shot with my quirky applications
🙂 ). Don't know how they fair in the match, tho, probably pretty good.
Both curriculums are similar, and you're going to find the same types of people wherever you go, so, for instance, I'm going to rank them based on my own personal preferences and less on where I think other people want to go.
And since they typically don't accept more than 10% of the class from out of state, they don't interview many ppl from out of Texas (except "outstanding applicants" according to MSAR, etc).
