i like the ut san antonio and baylor threads so much that i wanted to start a thread for my fellow ttu'ers. anybody out there found a place to live? checked out books? etc. etc. etc.

I am REALLY behind....I haven't even filled out my fafsa.

Have you found a place to live yet?

Oh yeah, the student affairs office wrote to me twice about some secured website for the pre MS1s and a big buddy system....she said we would get more info later this month but June is practically over. Any news on this?

as far as a place to live goes...there are several apt. complexes near the med school (ashton pointe comes to mind, newer, but a little pricey) & i think they all prelease. or you could contact a real estate agent about buying/leasing a house or duplex (they don't prelease). i'm going with the latter, since i've had enough of apt. living. either way, i'd get something lined up soon. i've heard that rental properties become scarce as the ttu semester approaches.

i've been dying to get my orientation packet from the office of student affairs, but nothing yet. the official invite to the white coat ceremony came yesterday, though.

i hope other ttu'ers make themselves known, too. 😉

I'm going to El Paso too. The last Spanish I took was in 12 grade.

I was thinking about Amarillo, because the surgery rotations are so good there but that's an even smaller town than Lubbock.

Hello you two TTU'ers...I am not attending, but applying at most TX schools for the next year class (2008).

Based on your comments, it looks as if 3rd and 4th year cannot be completed in Lubbock? That is not something I had previouslyl recognized...better go check out the school site.

Congrats to both of you for crossing the first Med hurdle. Good luck.

BTW, how is the cost of living in Lubbock (particularly housing)??

Tech sends a little less than half their class to El Paso and the rest get divided into Lubbock or Amarillo. The ones that stay in Lubbock are usually married or are older students, basically students that would be hard pressed to move again. The surgery rotations in Amarillo are incredible because there are no residents in the hospital, only doctors and med-students, so the third years do more than most med students as far as surgery.

I haven't gotten an apartment yet, but housing is reasonable there. I would say about $550 for a good 1 bedroom.

I have an apt at St. Francis Village (~1 mi from school). I haven't heard anything about that phantom "Big Sib" thing yet either. I think it's a conspiracy.

As far as getting ready for class, I've started checking out books & prices, but right now I'm just worried about furnishing my new place. 😛

Hey guys, good luck to you all this upcoming year! I'm not going to TTU, but I am from West Texas (near Amarillo) so I may be helpful if you want to ask some questions about the area. Plus most of my good friends from High School went to Tech, so I've made several trips back and forth and have gotten to know Lubbock pretty well also.

As for apartments in Lubbock, you don't necessarily have to be close to the med school at all. Unlike other major cities, Lubbock is extraordinarly easy to get around in. Traffic is never bogged down. You could live on the other side of the city and it still take you only 10 minutes to get to the school, as compared to the same distance taking you an hour in Houston or so. So don't let distance really being a factor for keeping you out of an apartment place that you like.

As for Amarillo, if I was going to Tech, I would choose here for my 3rd and 4th years. Plus it's almost like a home city for me too. It is smaller than Lubbock, but I honesly prefer Amarillo to Lubbock, and it does have a really good medical center too. The SW part of the city is growing by leaps and bounds, plus it has the uniqueness of having Stanley Marsh around as well 😉 . If you have some individual questions, I'll be happy to try to answer them, just let me know. Oh, and I may not be around for awhile, I'm moving to Houston tomorrow and my computer is going in the box this evening.

i've visited lubbock a few times since i was accepted & i think i'm going to enjoy living there for a few years. it's funny that lubbock, as a town, gets such a bad rap...anyway, if you have any tips about restaurants, well, anything, i'm sure we'd all appreciate them. thanks 🙂

Has anyone received any information about orientation or anything? I'm also going to El Paso...hope some of the college spanish comes back. I guess that's it for now.

Hey Guys,

Let me be the 5th person from Tech to sign up. I have already submitted mostly everything (vaccines, transcripts, financial aid, etc). Even found an apartment with a roomate. I am assigned to El Paso campus. I dont see Spanish as a problem since it's my native language so I can help you guys out if you need it.

I was looking at the Lubbock map and there are no clubs at all. Looks like I'll be driving to Dallas to get my fun. Do you know if we need to buy a computer for class? Is that really necessary?

Well I am not joining your 2007 class but I just wanted to say Congrats on the acceptance to Tech med school. I am actually a Engineering/pre-med at Tech right now. I have lived in Lubbock for five years now so if you have any questions, I would be glad to help.

no worries. the email was from the pres. of the student american medical org. at tech. i think he sent the email to people who have already submitted their sixty bucks (or whatever) to join the organization.

his comment about the books was at the end of an informational email...basically an aside...

Please feel free to contact me through email concerning any questions about TMA and/or your upcoming first year here at Tech. I would like to offer one piece of advice now however. Wait until you get to orientation and speak with your big sib before you buy your books. Personally I am about to give my little sib several Histology books and a Grant?s dissector. You?ll save money if you wait. Take care and we would look forward to seeing you here in Lubbock soon.

YES....finally completed the fafsa and tech financial aid!

I think there are clubs in Lubbock, my friend said he partied it up during second year. Remember, this is mainly a college town.

I'm pretty sure that computers are required; they add an extra $2500 in the MS1 budget for it. But, there is no way I'm spending that much for a computer though.

Yes there are clubs in Lubbock. There's an area called the Depot District which kind of the local nightlife hotspot full of bars, clubs, and lounges. I believe a new "mega" club just recently opened in the area as well. You know, one of those which has like 3 or 4 clubs in one all with different themes. Not to mention that there are always parties going on, not that you'll have time for them that is. 😉

Are there still plenty of rooms to rent in the good complexes?

What about 19th street? I hear there are nice apartments there but isn't it also close to school, which I heard was not the best part of town?

You guys are LUCKY! I wish I was starting now. TT is the only school I'm applying to (Early Decision Program for class of 2008). My brother is a resident there so I have gotten meet a number of people in the admissions office and a few doc's on the interview staff.

I picked Tech because it is a great school with a great attitude and of very high importantance, it is one of the most family friendly around (I'm married with 2 kids). Anyone else with a family? I would like to hear how it goes the first year.

I'll take any mentoring/advice you MS1's are willing to dish out. I will probably be moving out this fall (provided I get in

I need someone to calm down my fears about going to Lubbock.

The last time I was there, during my interview in Nov, I had a very bad experience there: I arrived at 11 pm, had a bad late night dinner pizza, went to the super wal-mart for socks, and didn't sleep a wink because I was staying at the best western by the HSC which is a front for a brothel....literally.

So, when I think about Lubbock I associate it with super wal-marts, bad pizza, and brothels. Please someone tell me it's not going to be like this for two years. I currently live in a suburb of Dallas; Dallas has alot to be desired but at least it's a big city with plenty of opportunity to do stuff.

Calm down about Lubbock. Coming from Dallas (Plano) myself, it took me a while to get used to it. I have lived here for five years.

Things to get used to:

1 - Dust Storms
2 - BAD slow drivers
3 - A lot of senior citizens
4 - Really bad smell when the wind blows just right. (Oil, Cows)
5 - Poor Road Construction

Don't expect it to be like Dallas with the late night spots because it's not. I love going back to Dallas to visit and eventually live. Lubbock is a great city though, it just runs at a slower pace than you are used to. It will take some time, but eventually you learn to call it home.

The Day's Inn on 4th street right by the HSC.....it's a real piece of crap.

The night before my interview LITERALLY every room around me was having sex off and on during the entire night.....I didn't get a wink of sleep before my interviews.

Just kept hearing the 18-wheelers pull up, place it in neutral, not turn off the engine, bang one out, then leave.

I found an apartment at jefferson commons; i did my undergrad at UT-austin, and i know the jefferson commons there was pretty nice so i went ahead and picked this one, plus its furnished and has a 9 month lease, so i guess if ya'll need a place, u can check it out at

Did the management pair you up with a roommate or did you get a 1 bedroom?

I went there yesterday and really liked the location, new feel, and furnished apartments. BUT, there are going to be a ton, if not all, undergrads living there.....way too much partying if you want to study.

I couldn't believe how many hot chicks were hanging out by the pool when I went there.....tooooo distracting.

I also heard that 30-60% of their units are not lived in because the word has gotten out that it is a party complex and not many people want to live there, the manager told me if another med student shows up we could pair up and pay like $380 each for a really nice place in a "quiter" part of the complex.

REALLY NICE faculty and students. Great community feel to the school, unlike UT-Houston and UTMB which I hear are very clique-ish and fraternity-like.

Both interviewers asked standard questions over my application (all aspects), my research, future of medicine, managed healthcare, goals, realities of being a physician. I felt I really connected with one of my interviewers, we really had alot in common.....both interviews were my best of the entire process.

Do you know if they have Latin music (Salsa, Merengue, etc.) ? I hope they do. A friend of mine said they might just have country music and that's it. 😕

I of course only scheduled 1 day for the trip and did absolutely no research. I leave everything until the last minute and fly by the seat of my pants.

Most of the apartments I saw close to campus were not up to par...AC units in the windows, etc.

I finally "settled" on Canyon Crossings just because I was tired of looking. It's small but cheap: 518 sq. feet for $465. I liked it b/c it was about 7 minutes from campus.....Damn I wish Tech had med student university housing.

I am thinking about blowing the security deposit and going to Willow Hills, 688 sq. ft for $530.

Does anybody know how far away from campus this place is?



I got this fat packet in the mail from Tech. It had this book called Medical Education Success Types. I'm trying to look over it now. Did anyone else get this?

What's up with the Big Sib program and the password website?
I haven't heard anything about it.

As I mentioned before, in Lubbock, it doesn't really matter how far away from campus you are. Traffic is nonexistant compared to Houston/Dallas commutes. No matter where you are, it shouldn't take you longer than 15-20 minutes to get to campus. Most of my friends live on the south side of town and it's never been a problem.

A good friend of mine is currently an MS2 at Tech this year. I'm pretty sure he'll be in the Big Sib program. Mainly it's just a way to acquaint new students to med school from what he says.

For thoses of you'll questioning Lubock's "night life", I learned something as a TAMU undergrad visiting Tech. Fatty liver disease must be prevalent there with as much as everyone drinks. The undergrads I met were all about beer. Did not meet any grad or professional students but I'm sure they are on a totally different track. As one girl I met there said, "All there to do here is drink and F*^#" I think that is one reason good doc's come from Tech, there is nothing to do there! So study up!

Isn't College Station the same way? I don't know of anyone who goes to A&M, but from what people tell me there isn't too much to do there either.

I remeber going there once in highschool for a lacrosse tournament....looked very similar to Lubbock.

My roomate and I drove to Lubbock from Houston. Most of the apartment complexes (all utilities paid) near 4th street were not that good. The only one that was decent was Raider's Pass but for 480 per person was too expensive for me. Plus is a undergrad place and with all the partying, it wont do me any good studying there.
Decided to rent in Canyon Crossing, because its cheap and quiet. Our floor plan is 2 bed 2 bath (887 sq ft. ) for $ 625. Got the packet in the mail too. Haven't read it. Right now I'm going out as much as I can before school starts.

I had some trouble with the management; they're so busy they could care less if you lease with them or not.
Anyway, I finally got their bigger 1 bedroom floorplan for $520. I might forgo the security deposit and switch over to Willow Hills if I have a chance to go back there and check it out: I heard it was really nice.

Damn....$625 for a 2 bedroom is cheap. I wish I would have gotten a roommate. I didn't want to just room with some guy I never met and have him turn out to be annoying, especially with all the hell that will be going on with med school. Maybe second semester or second year.

I REALLY need to start going out.....I haven't had a chance b/c I'm so tired from work....it's a real ball-buster. I have to earn my machismo.

i am coming to lubbock prolly around august 6th to make it for our orientation on the 7th?

well anyways, my lease at jefferson commons doesnt start till the 25th so that means that i dont have a place for 20 days.

does anyone need a roommate for the month of august, i can split august's rent or pay 300 bucks for a place to stay. I can sleep on the floor or on the couch; I am pretty clean, studious, nice personality, dont drink, dont smoke, etc...

or if anyone knows a cheap place that offers temp housing or would like to save some money on rent in august, let me know

Why don't you just try and find another place. I know that Willow Hills still have 1 bedrooms available, probably in early august.

I remeber the manager telling me that she has three bedroom/two baths available now for TWO people to rent at $350 each. She is willing to room people together. If you want call her and ask her to room you with ANY grad student or anyone over 23. I think that would be better than being in limbo for 20 days.
