Texas Tech (Lubbock) c/o 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
alright, I got a question. I was looking for a tech medicine/school of medicine or something similar shirt to get my mother for her birthday, I think she's a bit more excited than I am about all of this.

however, this is all i've found anywhere to order online. ttuhsc bookstore

has anyone found, or know of anywhere else?

I had the hardest time finding shirts too, I still don't know any "official" HSC ones. The best would be to try to get a hold of the AMSA chapter here, they had a really cool SOM shirt with the vitruvian man on it. I can't remember the presidents name but I think it's Jadai or Jadian or something like that. I'm not an amsa member so i couldn't really tell you the email right now, just google it. It is kind of funny but the organizations have the better shirts.

🙁 Red shirts don't get along well with my red hair. 🙁

I wish they made it for toddlers. Want to get one for my boy while I'm in Lubbock for spring training!:xf:

They had some really cute general Tech merchandise at Red Raider Outfitter for toddlers- don't think it was med school though. Good luck! BTW Red Raider Outifitter is on what they consider "Raider Alley"- it is off of University.

Thanks...but it's going to have to be specifically school of med. That's the only way mom is going to allow it for him (she's a longhorn!). As for me, I am excited to become a Red Raider! Let the Saturday brawls begin!:meanie:

I'm all for the TTU Med stuff, but that my friends is where I draw the line. Mark my words if I ever own anything Texas Tech it will say "HSC/Med/etc." or it will say "Beat The Hell Outta TTU." =) We bleed maroon.

That's where my wife stands. I went to a small oos school, so I need someone to root for. Does a&m play in Lubbock this year? One of my friends played fb at a&m and is thinking of making a road trip one of the next two years to see me.

going to have to agree 100% with that, though it will be Baylor gear I'll proudly sport around campus. I'm also sorry that your school color is purple. 😉

I think I'm going with the black sweatshirt for mom.

and the red one for myself to rep in SA for the next 5 or so months.

This school spirit is getting me excited. Looking forward to a few possible weekend social events(scheduled around studying of course) this fall!

A&M should play in Lubbock this year because UT came this year and they alternate... I personally went to a larger OOS school but since it doesn't have football and is 85% commuter so I have no life-long allegiance!

I will bleed red and black- I have always been a fan and we have a good family history with Tech so I am already wearing my TTU jacket/tshirts...thanks to my aunt and uncle for the awesome "welcome to the Red Raider family" package!

How cute, a real life A&M sports fan.

ditto. thanks and gig'em. 👍

dude, don't even go there.

When it comes to UT vs Tech, I will always bleed orange 🙂

Purple and gold here. I mean, technically I'll bleed red, but you get the picture.

Yay! I got a neat little scholarship in the mail today. 👍

yikes, $17.50? ...for a t-shirt?

Bragging rights are bragging rights. That's about what a custom printed T-shirt costs online, isn't it? You're comparing a small volume, for profit business to a fair where a student organization is selling a bunch of shirts at cost.

Well I did my CBC and got back my copy today- while I am clear criminally (I haven't had so much as a traffic ticket) it is showing that someone in MN is using my SSN! I am shocked! My dad is going to pull all my files and I will be going to the Social Security Office to try to preserve my identity! I thought I had already figured out who I was in this long process too!

guess that's a good thing to find.

reminds me I really need to get around to doing that and my fafsa.

Teacherman (and anyone else not living with a roommate, because they are married) are y'all planning on buying a house?

We've been trying to decide....

With the housing market this way and our credit being good, it seems like the smart thing to do. Opinion?

Aggie- I think a house in Lubbock would be a good option, especially if you see yourself trying to residency there. The houses there aren't that expensive (one of my cousins has a 3bd 1.5 ba home for the same cost each month that their 2 bd. apartment was in Lubbock) Also, since you have a husband he can do maintenance and keep up a yard that is the big reason I won't rent a house!

It would probably be a great time to buy, and especially so if you are staying for a while (ie residency). Even if you are leaving after 4, the market will probably be okay to make a bit off it, or maybe rent it out to med students.

For us, we just put our house on the market and I don't want to go through this stress any time soon so we'll either rent a house or apartment. Are you planning on going to spring training?

Bah! My computer geek husband can mow the yard, but as far as fixing stuff goes....eh, we'll see. :c) He's really good at fixing my computer, though! =)

Makes sense, I don't know what we'll do....still debating.

Maybe, depends if I can get off work! I want to go and we need to look for housing, so most likely - yes. =)

Do you even know if you're staying in lubbock all four years? Might be a good idea to make sure of that before deciding.

that's my biggest thing. I'm not married, but I would probably buy a house if I knew I was going to be there 4+ year. If i'm there only 2, not sure it'll be worth it any more. If I was married I probably would even for two years though.

still not sure what I'm going to do, waiting until spring training or another time I can get up there to look around.

Yes, we are as long as we can get that option. I know they give preference to people buying houses and people who are married and have spouses employed there. It would be very difficult on us for him to have to get a new job only 2 years after already having to find a new job.

So, yes - of course we have thought of that.

Actually they don't give preference to people buying houses, pretty sure it even says so on the location preference list in big bold letters. But yea, the spouse thing for sure will let you stay, so I'm sure you'll be fine. Hell, if he's a computer guy have him work for our IT department, they could really use someone who actually knows what they're doing.

So if you're married with a kid then there should be a good chance of staying in Lubbock all 4 years? I hope so, because I hate moving and I know my wife is sacrificing her job and I'd hate to ask her to do that again in 2 years Plus, I'd like some consistency for my son.

The thing about buying a house is that with medical school, you should assume you will have to sell in 4 years. Given that the housing value could change and all the overhead and fees needed to make a house change hands, I don't see how it could work.

If you assume the house increases in value by 2% + inflation per year, then a $100,000 house would increase in value by $8,000 in 4 years. What are all the fees for listing the house, cleaning it up, mortgage payments while you wait for it to sell, "points" when you sign the mortgage, repairs going to come to?

It costs $1100 to rent a 3 bedroom house. Or, $13,300 per year.

Assuming a 3 bedroom house costs just $100,000 to buy, then the money lost to interest is $5500 per year. Plus property tax, mortgage insurance, repairs...

You'll get your equity back when you sell, but interest and repairs and taxes you won't.

Hmm. I don't know if it is worth it or not. The problem seems to be risk : it looks like you could come out ahead with a house, but there's uncertainty inherent in the process that could delay you from selling it or cause you to lose equity.

Course, I've always heard that if price is your main concern, "mobile homes" (aka trailer parks) can't be beat...

Ah, well that's just what the med student at my interview told me. I haven't had any communication from Tech other than "You're in, give us your money." haha. :c) But yeah, I hope that having a husband with a job will give some reason to be at the top of the 4-year list.

Teacherman - I would hope that you would be FIRST on the list to stay four years since you have a (cuuute) little boy and wife. =)

Some of that is stuff we have considered, but our financial advisor gave us slightly different numbers than that. She also said that if we were going to be there 4 years it would be better to build a little equity than to throw all of our money into rent. After it all we would always have the option of renting it out or I could possibly get into residency there.

I agree though, buying a house is always a risk and even more so in medical school. We're just trying to decide whether to "throw away the money for repairs, etc." or to "throw away the money for rent."

I would think so. They really do take things like that into consideration and I'm sure with your situation you're an ideal candidate to stay in lubbock all four years. The only people that I know of that are guaranteed all four years in lubbock are the MD/MBA people and probably the MD/PhDs also. After that it's whoever "needs" to stay here for family or whatever. It's actually not as easy to stay in lubbock as one might think either. I tried to stay because I was going to get a house so that when my sister comes up here for college she'd have family here and not have to stay in the dorm. She's was on depression meds at the time so I was worried about her making the transition from small town school with 20 classmates to college were she'll have classes with more people than our town's population. She actually had to be home schooled for a year because of her condition, so I really wanted to be here for her. I explained that in my location preference sheet, but no go, they said amarillo. Then I found out about some other classmates that got to stay for much lesser reasons :wtf:

My wife and I would like to buy a house, but all of that hinges on what happens with our current house that we just bought 2 years ago. I imagine we are going to lose a lot of money when we sell it, and we may not have enough for a down payment on a house in Lubbock.

I really hope I get to stay in Lubbock for 4 years too. I have a wife and baby to think about, and I also have a lot of family and friends there too (I grew up in Lubbock). Does anyone know when we submit these preferences and when we finally hear where we are going to be going for 3rd and 4th year?

not trying to hi-jack the thread, feel free to converse around my post...
[i have a test to study for... so i'm gonna post this and run, then check it later 😛]

has anyone NOT heard back about the cbc?

i paid online over the weekend, and faxed that form monday afternoon, but still haven't gotten the copy of it in my email... seems like the rest of you guys had it back in ~24 hours, no?

my turn around time was around 36 hours so I would check into it... of course mine came back that someone else is using my SSN so I have a new stress to deal with!

Maggie : I just emailed amy.d o t y AT ttuhsc.edu and had her confirm that she received my letter accepting the spot and that I was now officially on the "list" of people who accepted their acceptances. She responded within 5 minutes of the email, and is the person who maintains the official list of who is on the class roster. I would just verify this way, and wouldn't sweat the check thing. Mine hasn't been cashed yet, either.

How can we learn more about the location options?

I might do the same as habeed did about the acceptance, just for peace of mind.

What is this about a check to reserve seat? I did not know we had to do that.

TTUHSC Class of 2013: will you be my valentine?
:biglove:

dazed, they mentioned the 100 dollars for us pre-matches back in nov. but I was under the impression that it wasn't due until a lot later and they would remind us. (i still haven't gotten a reminder though, so now i'm going to have to go dig up my paperwork).

I have to admit i'm a little disappointed because it seems like I won't have a shot at staying in Lubbock. I totally understand that it is important not to have to uproot spouses & children, but it is kind of a bummer. I think I might try for midland as my 2nd, I'm really considering OBGYN and they have the new Laura Bush Center for Women's health. My b/f's dad would be one of the people i could rotate with for endocrinology...not sure how i feel about that. He's literally a genius, but his people skills are...well... lacking. Not to mention there would probably be a conflict of interest there... plus... midland seems even more in the middle of no where... 🙁

yay! just got a reply from Amy Doty:
-CBC cleared feb 11,
-check was deposited yesterday

it's official! i'm a taken seat!!!

[haha, i thought the neuroticism was supposed to end once we got accepted somewhere!!!]

dazed and shan: the paperwork talked about a $100 class seat guarantee fee. admittedly, it was a little confusing (on some of the stuff it only mentioned the fee if we were late getting our paperwork in, and in other places it acted as though the $100 was compulsory regardless of deadline... i sent it just in case, and in retrospect it seems to indeed be necessary...?)

yeah, kinda agreed. i'm going the OB route too and even with the midland facilites, lubbock still houses the mother of all the laura bush institutes...

i really wouldn't mind doing some time at the amarillo clinical facilities, but i also would like to be involved in research (maybe an epidemiological study?)--which would require a lot of time at the laura bush womens health institute (can't take an that from beginning to end in two years... noooooooo way.)

maybe at spring training you and i oughta find ourselves some a couple of lubbock men to agree to elope (with secret 3-year annulment paperwork in hand of course!!!):laugh::laugh: just think, they'd benefit from tax breaks too!:laugh::laugh:

When did they ask you for the check? I never got a request for the check or the CBC so I called the office and they said that they'd send out a letter asking for it at a later date... They also said they'll ask for the CBC later too. I'm confused.
